So a happy surprise (to me, at least) was discovering that my optical drive in my nc8430 handles DVD-RAM in addition to CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW.

However, having no experience with DVD-RAM (and with the media being notably more expensive then any other blank optical media) I was wondering what media people have had good luck with in their HP laptops with DVD-RAM compatible drives.

DVD-RAM seems almost ideal for storing regular backups, to me at least.

DVD-RAM has better error correction which makes it a good choice for backups. I have used both Panasonic and Maxell DVD-RAM. I haven't had an issue with either.
