If I could get just a few, say 5 (more would be great too) responses to this, some pro, some con, it would be really helpful, not only to me personally, but to, I think, a large segment of the market for the E17 waiting in the wings to decide on the sleekest, lightest, most feature-packed high end notebook for use as an "Executive Desktop Replacement" computer - in other words, the most boring and underutilized use of this beast, which also happens to qualify as the best large screen notebook (think: big brother to the SONY VPC-Z) a business executive could dream of having as primary, on the desk, sometimes home on the weekend!
The post asks: is it "safe" to adopt this as a primary professional computer that doesn't need to do anything more amazing than work fairly soon (couple of hours) after getting it out of the box and setting up and then, well, every day for the next couple of years, with proper maintenance and probably the lowest average temperature/voltage demands of any group of owners looking at it. Have the bugs been worked out sufficiently to make it a good purchase for someone who does NOT live for the 3D Infinity display features and are willing to deal with perennial problems to have this?
Or, is the Envy 17 too unreliable and poorly made to be worth a look from users who value all of its performance chops, its size, weight and looks, and price, but don't have the time to deal with returning and replacing the first 2-3 units you get and spend untolled hours on the phone with HP Tech Support just to get the thing to "work" pretty much all day, every day, on relatively undemanding (graphically) tasks?
Put just a slightly different way: it's too hard to sort through the threads between last June and today to determine: has the design, manufacturing quality control, heat profile, etc., been worked out so that someone who doesn't "need" it's gaming chops but prefers it by a factor of ten over the next best looking/working DTR can make a wise choice of it? Or is it still plagued with quality problems, design (especially temp. control) flaws and trying to be more than it can be at it's comparatively low price point for the segment?
Promise, I read all the threads and posts and could not glean the drift of improvement over the 6 month life cycle of the E17.Thanks much for the help.
Oh, last important point, as my present DTR is an HP DV8 and it is PERFECT for the task - weak nVidia 230 and all - but it is heavy and ugly and has no backlit keys and, I'd like to double it's battery life to, like, 2 hours!! - well, you get the point - and yes, Sandy Bridge integrated GPU will probably be fine, when it is out and the engineering design bugs have been worked out of its implementation on the E17![]()
), what is the "safest" configuration to get NOW to avoid known problem areas - ie, I am inclined to go with the minimum cpu/gpu power config, no 3D, etc. Will these, or any other configuration choices, improve my chance of getting trouble free performance.
Thank you!
