Why thank you for the thread 2.0!
Can anyone give me a good link on how to overclock a 5650? Also posting some benefits/cons of overclocking would be great. never did this before but if needed i will do so.
EDIT: I have actually searched, and had no luck :/ -
I'd be open to entertaining some light CPU and GPU undervolting if it would help keep my temps low. Anyone know of any i5 and/or 5650 undervolting guides?
-
Gonna be playin hon and sc2 when I get this thing tuesday.
as for overclocking, the first thing i would look into is reapply the thermal paste with arctic silver... unless hp already uses arctic silver but i doubt it -
Do we have any gaming benchmarks for this machine?
-
Even if they did use arctic silver, I doubt they would properly apply it.
-
They don't. And yeah, LOL, they wouldn't do a proper job. I've repaired enough HP notebooks to know that the general method employed is to slather.
The thermal compound they use is Shin-Etsu Micro Si. AKA gray goop. -
these are for an acer lappy with a 5650, but should work for GPU clocking on the envy 14:
tool:

3dmark06 and burn tests ahoy! -
Gonna install the ssd when i get mine still wondering if i can use ssd main drive and 500gv as storage or too small. ANyways I'll be playing sc2 Hon and prob ffx14 when I'm going friends house. This laptop I'm using now I think is better than envy but its too big to carry around school and friends house :O
-
I asked this in the original owners lounge, but i am still concerned. I want to get this lappy very badly but I am worried that the higher res screen wont be able to run BF2 very well and will look weird if I reduce the res. Does anyone have any advice?
-
Well, yes, it would run better on the similarly spec'd DV6 you were looking at since the screen res is lower. Playing at native res is always best.
But you will have to wait until someone actually tests BF2 on the E14 to have a definitive answer such as FPS and what graphic details work best. -
Yeah this thread is all speculation pretty much until people get their laptops.
-
The only game I really want to play in the future is Star wars the old republic which looks omgamazing
oh and maybe SC2 -
That isn't by chance close to KOTOR is it....?
EDIT: "close to" as in related to. As in more of the game I loved... -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it's related to.
if by related to you mean it's a mmo in the KOTOR timeperiod (old republic time period) being made by bioware -
Does anyone know how hard is it to access the CPU to reapply thermal paste, and does it void out the warranty?
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
mid-high level of difficulty since you're gonna have to take off all the heat pipe stuff and that's interconnected between cpu and gpu and the two different fans.
edit: also. Yes, it probably voids the warranty -
Hey quick question. Do you think the 5650 will be able to handle Runescape on high settings?? What about medium settings?
k thanx -
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Runesape will be playable after 3 more graphics updates. dont worry young gamer XD -
It will handle Runescape without a problem.
BF2 is a little trickier but my guess is that it will run very good at 1600*900. The 5650 Benchmarks with similar processors / RAM show most modern games can be played at medium / high settings in 1366*768. And Battiefield 2 is really old.
Personally, I'll be playing Modern Warfare 2 ( a little to none), Napoleon Total War (a little) and Bad Company 2 (a LOT) -
See the service manual on the 1st page of the official thread to see how it's done. It's not hard to do.
Theoretically it voids the warranty. But the HP script tech primates wouldn't know you did. Especially if you used AS5 which is the same color as thermal compound HP uses. -
I run BF2 on my 15 at 1920x1080 highest settings with 8xAA/16xAF and rarely dip below 60fps. The 14 should have no problem whatsoever running maxed out at 1600x900. BF2 is quite old...
-
This is not possible because even the 5870 and GTX480m can not do that unless you are playing with high resolution and low/medium settings
The game is very demanding on ultra settings -
Benchmarks for another laptop with i7 and 5650m compared to ASus G51 with GTX260m to give you an idea of the performance
Envy 14 results should be similar i imagine since it use the same CPU/GPU
Anyone got any idea about the battery life for Envy 14 while gaming? -
The notebookcheck benchmarks for the 5650 (600MHZ) in the Fire DTX show 35.7 FPS with textures max / vsync off / 4X AA / 1920x1080
Generally speaking looking at the benchmarks for i5-430 / i5-520 and 550MHZ clocked 5650 should give you a good idea. -
You are mistaken. I am referring to the game Battlefield 2, released in 2005.
-
x2
For Bad Company 2 you can expect to run it in high settings @1366 by 768 with about 30 fps. Medium settings should be 40-45 fps. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I gotta wonder how well this thing will run...well...
Bioshock
Borderlands
Dead Space
Guess oblivion and Fallout 3 but I think it'll run both of those alright (FO3 on medium and that's good enough).
Mass Effect 2
Mirror's Edge
STALKER Call of Pripyat (I'm gonna assume Stalker: Shadows of Chernobyl will run fine once you install the STALKER 2009 mod) -
I love BF2.
-
All those games should run at native res on high settings, perhaps with the exception of STALKER. I run all those games on my Envy 15 without a sweat, and the 5650 is not that much slower than the 5830.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
dat's good.
Dun care about many other newer games besides Singularity.
Also dun care about AA. I've never been to use it much before..not gonna start caring now if I can get some more fps by shutting it off -
UHHHH OHHH MYYY GODDDDD!!!! I want this laptop sooo badly but HP just loves to delay me... This thread just might cure my itch until i get it.
-
Is Colin McRae: DIRT 2 better optimized for NVIDIA cards than ATI cards? I noticed that the GT330M/GT335M seems to outperform the HD5650 in this game based on the fps values on Notebookcheck.
On high settings, an Alienware M11x with a SU7300/GT335M gets 33.1 fps while an Acer AS4820TG with i5-430M/HD5650 gets 24.9 fps. Is it better drivers?
A Toshiba Qosmio F60 with an i3-330M/GT330M gets 32.3 fps on high settings too. -
Don't focus too much on 1 game or a 2... what matters is the overall performance and the 5650 beat the GT335m 99% of the time, and in some games the different is really huge performance boost from the 5650 over GT335.
-
What's a comparable desktop graphics card that roughly matches the power of a 5650? In the other thread someone alleged that it was about equal to an 8800GT (what's in my computer at the moment), and I didn't believe him at all.
-
WoW on Envy 14
Here's what I posted before on the owners Thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...hp-envy-14-owners-lounge-315.html#post6428169
-
I would agree with him, I have almost the same fps as my old desktop which had an 8800GTS 640 MB which is slightly slower than 8800GT.
-
Look at the benchmarks i posted in the previous page
The GTX260m is equal to Desktop 8800 GT
Obviously the 5650m is slower but it's still pretty fast card to be honest for 14 inch a laptop -
What is your average FPS like? I'm hoping 60+ while in arena/dailies or just around, and hopefully high 40s raiding?
I'm still deciding between an envy of sort or the gx640. The only games I'll play will be WoW and the new star wars MMO, so if i can get the envy cheaper than the gx640 i'll likely grab it instead because it's SO sexy. -
I must go look this up.
Edit: I looked it up. I am highly interested. I've been looking for a different MMORPG ever since I quit WoW. Does anyone know the tentative release date? -
You can get those FPS easy but to keep them high you might have to turn afew quality settings low.
-
Nope, no word of any release date yet... I hope soon
-
A very tentative release date (based all on speculation) could be late spring 2011.
-
I think I posted this in the Official Forum, but since this thread is dedicated to Gaming here it goes again:
The Envy 14 should be a good 2 year laptop for gaming. Things to keep in mind though:
- Games will vary from one game to another depending on the optimization done by the development team of the game.
- Game companies are starting to optimize so their software can be run on older machines to avoid the Crysis effect (aka, people don't want to spend ridiculous amounts of money to run a game).
- Set your graphics accordingly. Your target FPS should be above 30 fps.
- Don't have outrageous expectations on having high or ultra settings on a game. Even Xbox/PS3 game graphics are set to something around a PC's low-medium quality to meet the 30 fps minimum.
SWTOR playable? Yes (couldn't tell you about the settings) -
interesting read.
-
Yeah, the most taxing game I will be playing is BF:BC2 and from what I've heard, it a rather old game and I should be able to run it fine at medium settings while still at native resolution. I hope.
-
This is simply not true, very misleading. The human eye is capable of distinguishing well beyond 30fps, around 80 is where the motion becomes fluid enough that you can't tell the difference.
There is a HUGE difference between 30 and 60fps, especially in twitch based shooters or any other game where reaction time is critical.
I think people are confusing Battlefield 2 and Battlefield Bad Company 2. BF2 is a dx9 title released in 2005 and is not that taxing on modern hardware. BF:BC2 is a dx11 title released in 2010 and is quite demanding, especially on the CPU-it only runs smoothly on quad core machines with a decent GPU. Dual cores definitely struggle in BC2, causing a performance bottleneck no matter how fast of a video card you pair with them.
On dual core machines especially, I've found BF:BC2 to eat up resources when there is a lot of action in the scene, especially when there are physics based events occurring (such as buildings collapsing, etc), causing the frame rate to drop dramatically. You really need 3+ CPU cores to play the game smoothly. -
Ugh not this again... The human eye can see far beyond 30fps. The difference between 30 and 60 fps is night and day. Anyone who has personal experience and reflexes greater than a sloth can confirm. The human eye can even perceive above 60fps. Air force tests show that the human eye can perceive fps Over 200. I'm posting on a phone so I can't really give support but it should be easy to find if you just google it. Sorry it's just...I've seen people claim this crap way too many times

well
in my own personal experience I can tell when a game is running at 30 fps or at 60 fps on a console.
same for on my computer.
It's just how the game moves. It feels a bit sluggish at 30 fps
now movies. can't really tell the difference but that's something else altogether -
I was about to say...I remember playing Unreal Tournament 2k3 and Quake 3....Before I upgraded my desktop I would only get 30fps and would get pwned SOOO bad - When I upgraded (back then I think I went from a geforce2 mx200 to a Radeon 9700 Pro All-in-wonder) The FPS went up to 100+ and I was amazed at how much better I did!
