Someone got 10k? I'm pretty sure you can't get 10k.

There were a few posts claiming insane overclocks on the 5650, but people have asked for proof and oddly enough they've never reappeared since :p

I've seen 10k over in the acer 3820tg thread.

but that's the damn acer 3820tg and they're overclocking both the 5650 AND the i5 450m

    To ridiculous extents lol.

    With my i5 450 @3.05Ghz and my 5650 at 525/950 I just barely got over 8000.

Im so happy, I went to a lan party today and played COD and CSS on max settings with no lag at all and this was from 11am to 6pm non-stop. My GPU got 58-67 and CPU got to 62-78 degrees which I think is very good to play on an overclocked (500/800MHz) for 7 hours straight. And I can still overclock even further so I am very happy with my envy right now :) What are you guys using to get your scores?

I really doubt them. I can hardly do 490/800. 500 and it artifacts/freezes up.

550/800 with no real issues here.

'course if you bump up the memory by anything it'll crash for me.

edit: also I don't really run it at 550/800 since the increase hasn't been worthwhile. 2-3 fps...eh..not worth it

I got up to 530/800 with no artifacting. (artifacts at around 570, but overheats quite a bit above 530/540)
I haven't tried overclocking my memory, and 450/800 is fine for most of the games I'm playing (Source engine games, Penumbra Overture, Bioshock 2).

    Same here

I tried 500/800, did fine for about 10 minutes in Furmark, but in a game-situation it crashed FAST...

Now I know I shouldn't have tried to jump that much that fast, but if I can't do 500/800 with 110% stability, I'm not gonna bother with overclocking...

Every card is different, and I'm not going to risk my card's stability or lifespan for anything less than a 50 MHz clock boost. That's not me being greedy, rather me being prudent - I'd have a hell of a time getting it repaired if the video card went out, since I live in China and the E14 isn't available here, so warranty service would likely involve shipping it back to the US and then having it shipped back here when it got fixed. Besides, with the exception of a few games or parts of games playing very poorly with my E14 (I'm looking at you, The Witcher, and certain maps of the third Borderlands DLC, which perform horribly for most people it seems), everything runs smoothly. Even those problem spots wouldn't benefit much from a couple dozen MHz...

Looking at past results, I'd suggest people concentrate on memory clocks too. I know it's the core clock that's lowered, but if you look at real-world results, a 100 Mhz overclock on the core only gives a meager 2-3 FPS gain in most scenarios. I think memory clocks might actually be more beneficial (or something like a 30/30 overclock instead of 60/0).

yeah awhile ago. they work fine.

they fixed (for a little while, til it happened yesterday) the bug where you get stuck at 300/300 clockspeed on the radeon when you swap to the igp and/or unplug from the wall and then go back to being plugged in and on the radeon.

Damn, I thought I had fixed that bug.

Besides that performance seems fine. and SC2 doesn't go all "OH MY GOD SO MANY PYLON ENERGY FIELDS TIME TO SLOW DOWN!" anymore.

...well within reason. I mean a ton of 'em still slows it down some but not as much.

Yeah, 10.8 solved my nasty crashing issues in Borderlands, or at least my installation of it coincided with the cessation of said issues, so that was nice. I need to see if The Witcher can actually run at anything like the settings it should manage on the Envy 14 now, though - it was trash on 10.3 - a game that should have run at 45 FPS on mostly high settings was often below 20 on low settings, so I'll be crossing my fingers with these new drivers, whenever I get around to testing them on The Witcher.

AA might be messing it up.

otherwise some sort of affinity issue (cores it may not like multicore)

otherwise...I may get to the witcher enhanced when I feel like downloading 14GB from Steam

I never really did the registry cleaning.

My method has been "get back to 10.3 by uninstalling 10.7 or whatever ATI drivers that aren't brought to you by HP)"

optional: "Update to latest HP, I never did that"

install ATI drivers, wait like 5-8 minutes for the black screen stuff, reboot.

    and..well then it was installed

you have to use a direct link. ATI downloader won't let you do it since it detects the switchable graphics (or in sony's case, if the computer is a sony).

it will still install but again there's that black screen glitch for the drivers so when you install it, the envy's screen will go black.

wait like 5 to 8 minutes for it to finish, then restart it (either have the power button set to shut down the computer or figure out how to navigate to shutdown through the keyboard)

    https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/920...mobile/10-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe

you ought to be using win7 64-bit but if somehow, someway you reinstalled and put on x86/32-bit windows: https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/920...mobile/10-8_mobility_vista_win7_32_dd_ccc.exe

If I recall correctly, I kicked AA to zilch and didn't see any improvements, though I might have just left it relatively low... As for affinity stuff, I might give it a try, but one would think that would have been mentioned on the Steam Forums and I don't recall seeing any core affinity stuff there. One would think that any game released since 2006 or so should at least play nicely with multi-cores, if not utilize them. I would hope that the days of being forced to set single-core affinity with new games have been over for a while by now... Nevertheless, if and when I get back to it, I might give that a try if it doesn't run better under 10.8.

If I buy call of duty black ops for PC, will I be able to install it on my desktop AND my Envy 14?

I believe so. I don't know of any games that only allow a single installation at a time. A lot of games have copy protection so you can only install them a limited number of times unless you void the earlier installations, but I think that multiple installations can be concurrent.

    (still considering E14 btw)

    (but also considering G53 now)

does anyone know whats going on with my video card? It plays games fine. cs 1.6 at 100 fps. but every 15 minutes or so I'll get a lag spike that goes down to 25 fps for 5 seconds. This happens for all games. It won't lag then it will have a lag spike. If i turn off powerplay my game crashes/artifacts/freezes comp everytime so I have to leave that enabled.

It happened for stock drivers, 10.7 and 10.8.... Do I have a defective card? The card works, it just gets lag spikes every 15 minutes or so. Everything works great so I don't want to send it in...

Depends. TF2 and L4D2 have muti-core rendering, so yes. It does improve performance. on other games that dont support multi-core, not so much, but still a little.

I do. I'm not sure there isn't really anything I can compare with, 3DMark06 scores will definitely be higher because there's a cpu test. Maybe tell me what kind of fps you're getting from some games and I'll see what I can get.

I can play borderlands on full graphics with anisotropic filtering off, except at places with a lot of smoke and light. Around 30fps, a little less perhaps. Don't think the i7 would make a big difference.

So, what's the deal with overclocking our E14's these days? I haven't been on NBR in a few months, so I'm still using MSI afterburner to get 550/900 stable with room to spare. I'd really like to see a method of voltage tweaking? Are there any ideas out there? With some voltage I bet I could hit 700+/950+ stable and under 85*c. (my current 550/830 that I normally game with hits 73* in normal temp room) I currently have no cooling mods/cooling pad yet.

How about i5 450m overclocking? I know people are doing it with the acer timelines.. I'd like to test it on here.... ideas?

Borderlands on low was barely passable on 10.3. After I upgraded to 10.7 recently, I'm able to play on everything max (no depth of field or bloom though) and 30~+ FPS.

Most of Borderlands runs great for me at high settings, but I've been playing at all low for a while now because of the Ridgeway in the Knoxx DLC, where there's no fast-travel network. That one damn map kills my GPU regardless of what the settings are... If I go through on all-low, I usually get about 20 FPS all the way through, which is irritating, but moderately playable (it does drop to 10-15 with action, though), but high settings get me more like 10 with no action and sub-5 when anything's happening anywhere on the map. There are a couple other maps that are a bit bad this way in that DLC, but nothing at its level.

I got so sick of switching graphics quality every time I had to go there that I gave up on it and have stuck to low-everything for a while now. However, since I haven't been there in a while, I might just switch back and avoid that area like the plague from now on...

I've been playing Borderlands at 450/800 on MAX setting (everything BUT the antialiasing i believe, but including bloom and lighting etc) and it seems to work perfectly. The only time the game lags is on the loading screens for maybe 2-3 seconds but I expect that would happen on lower setting as well. I played the entire game from start to end on these settings on the Envy and it's been great! I reached temps of roughly 65-70 though. Although within 15 minutes of finishing the game the temps would be in the 45 range already.

A question about overclocking though. How do you guys determine when it stops working. I used Afterburner to increase the core clock to 500MHz and then I played Borderlands for several hours and nothing hapened. The temps didn't even increase from what it seems? It was definetly running at 500.

I was suprised after all the fiasco with people saying they would crash at anything over 475? I haven't tried going further or anything but those are my initial gaming impressions.

Also: I haven't been hitting the ole SC2 much if anything on this Envy (was playing it on a desktop) but I fooled around on one campaign mission with it for 30 minutes maybe (Safe Haven), it was either on High or Ultra settings and it was definitely playable. The load time for the map was even shorter than on my desktop! Admitantly it is a newer machine. I might have turned shadows off though, I don't remember the specifics as it was a week or so ago.

Nope. I'm alright at most places except Knoxx's ridgeway, that bit is irritating. I OCed to 550/900 but I crash in borderlands.

has anyone given civ 5 a go on the envy yet? interested to see how it runs, it appears the 5650m is 'just' at the minimum spec so wonder if it needs to be played with everything on low.

    Civ5 experience on Envy 14:

All settings on medium, texture on high, no AA generally guarantees 30-60 FPS 80% of the time. The other 20% dips into low teens, mid 20s, but thats during zooming in, fast camera movement in and out of the game board, etc. so its not bad.

Tried running on max settings, no AA, ran consistently less than 30 FPS all the time. Don't recommend playing it on max.

DX10/11. Haven't tried DX9 - DX9 would most likely be the better choice though.
