ah, that's probably because of the mouse lag - it improves fps at the expense of mouse delay.

Hello, guys i have a chance to buy Envy 14 with 1600x900 display with 720qm, and i was wondering about few things:
    1. How long does the battery work with and w/o wifi on? Are ther any easy undervoilting possibilities?
    2. What are temperatures of the case during a stress for example playing a game? Is the laptop loud?

Please answer those questions or i ll go buy Acer or Asus ! :p

Hey guys, been a while. Well I paged the ram and that improved game play but now my computer has been crashing on mass effect even with no overclock. I have been really disappointed with the gaming on my computer so I called hp and they said they will check it out and replace the video card. I hope they do. I told them many times I have already tried everything and they still continued to tell me to download the "Latest drivers from hp." I told them "Why don't you update your drivers newbs, you only have catalist 10.3 and 10.6 which gives you a black screen when you install it!" She didn't even know what ccc was anyways so I guess the joke is on me. But anyways, yeah my video card sucks and I can't wait for a new one. I have to say though that I love this computer besides all the rough patches, and I'm definitely am happy that hp is doing SOMETHING about it. I just hope that not buying an m11x wasn't a mistake.

Am I the only person that gets the message "Your computer is low on memory" (as in RAM) when I'm playing games? I get it all the time with Black Ops and GTA IV and sometimes with other games. The only thing I have running in the background is avast, steam and thats about it apart from the beats software. When I turn the laptop on its using about 1.2GB out 4GB. Is this normal?

Just ran the trial version of PCMark Vantage and my score was 10,171, which seems like it's too high. Does anyone know if trial version scores are higher for any reason?

It shouldn't be, but it does seem to high.
    Laptopmag got ~6,100 with an Envy 14- i5 450 and 500GB HDD.

You have the 460 and an SSD, but an SSD shouldn't bump the score up by ~66%...

That's what I thought, but my score just cannot be accurate - it has to be skewed for some reason or other.

Just after a few idea's with a problem that I'm having with my Envy 14 (i5). I am running the 10.8 drivers, and using the MSI Afterburner app to O/C the GPU. The problem is quite weird, when the GPU is at 450/800 I get around 32fps in MW2, and about 55fps using a Video card stability test program. If I bump the GPU up to 451/800 I get about 57-65fps in MW2 and 155fps in the stability test program.

Is there something wrong with my GPU/drivers? Why is my framerate more than doubling when the card is overclocked 1Mhz. If I roll it back to 450/800 the FPS fall back to the stock (very slow) levels.

So, I've been playing Chronicles of Riddick on my new Envy 14 w/Radiance and I just had to post about how amazing it looks.

I realize it's an old game, but there are times when the lighting, motion blur and depth of field combine in a certain way to make it look nearly photo realistic. I've been using all settings maxed out (no AA) and the frame rate is consistently 60+.

And the laptop doesn't even get hot! This thing is great.

I never bothered with it after I got it working since the gains were marginal at best on my card (hey you can hit 550mhz. ok..good. that's like 3 fps. Big whoop. Not worth it)

    no.

you also have to modify MSI afterburner's .cfg file if you wanna be able to change the clock speed for the graphics card

well that's because you overclocked it way too high.

you're supposed to test things in increments of 5-10 or 15 mhz and go from there. see if it's stable through an hour of gaming/benchmarking/whatever.

whenever you get a failure, that's your upper upper limit and you have to go down some and try the next level instead until it fails too.

in the end it's kinda pointless with the envy14 since the cards are undervolted. You can't get much of an increase.

you can't mes with the voltage either since that's blocked out too.

Mine has a 65 watt psu and I get notifications that a bigger psu would improve performance. Has anyone tried gaming with a 95 watt psu?

Maybe that would unlock the higher clOcks. My 3820tg had a much bigger psu. Just a wild guess.

Games like this really benefit from a high contrast screen.

Mass effect 2 and dead space should also be great.

HP sent you the wrong PSU for the laptop.

    you're supposed to get a 90W one (mine is a 90W one)

Also no that does not unlock a higher clock rate for the gpu (it defaults to 450/800).

Yeah, I bought two open box units.

One came with a 60 watt HP. The other came with a 60 watt dell. LOL

Future Shop is essentially Best Buy with commission sales people. I guess I have to go back to the store and get this sorted out.

I am about six hours into this 'project' and I have not installed steam yet! Yikes. I am a glutton for punishment.

    egh.

    well that sucks.

also apparently there is a 65 watt adapter in the maintenance manual as an option.

I mean it's not enough power for the computer but *shrugs* it does appear in there once under miscellaneous parts (along with a few 90watt adapters)

    the computer's specifications require 19.0 V dc @ 4.74 A - 90W

so yeah. 90watt PSU with 4.74 Amps.

Make sure you're running on your ATI GPU. If you are, check that it's not clocked at 100/150. At the normal clock of 450/800 you should be fine with that game.

Well, I play Civ5 on DX11 with a i5-580m @ 1366x768 (brightview) and it plays very well, at least on standard sized maps. It slows down a bit toward the end, as most Civ games do (20-30s for AIs turn), but it's not that bad. I have all my graphics settings on the highest possible, and it's very smooth.

Can't speak for an i7QM or higher resolution (Radiance), but perhaps this will be useful.

im so close to buying this laptop and i would but i have a few questions...
first im deciding between this and an alienware m11x. i favor the hp envy because of its much more sleek design but the m11x's metal finish isnt bad either. performance wise its pretty similiar but the envy comes out on top. budget wise, i live in canada so a i5-430m with 6gbs ram hp envy 14 would cost me 1145 dollars. im 14 and ive saved up alot of money and i only have 1100 which wouldnt be too much of a problem but is it really worth it? i mean im getting pretty much the lowest end proc for a high price. id be willing to buy it through the internet but im not too sure my parents are. alienware m11x on the other hand is 800-1000 dollars but depends and its pretty decent although id be much more satisfied with the envy. any other suggestions? what would you do in my situation? thanks alot

When considering the m11x you must consider that it has no optical drive and you will probably need one, so consider another 50-75$ on that price. Also even with the down-clocked card, the E14 does a lot better in gaming and 3D rendering. The m11x gets bottlenecked in some tasks due to its low voltage/low clocked cpu. The lowest end i5 is much better than the highest end low voltage cpu. In terms of mobility the m11x is much smaller in size, but thicker and weighs only about a pound less. You can squeeze more battery life out of the m11x, but the Envy should give you about 4 hours. I'd say the Envy is a better choice if you are up in the air about the two. In terms of price you should google HP Envy 14 deals, You can usually find 50-250$ off in different coupons.

It should play all those games on "high" settings with a few compromises for SC2, like a 1024x728 resolution setting. Processor power, in most games is not as much an issue as ram and GPU. the 460m should continue to play all Direct x 10 games very well. Some newer games a better utilizing hyper-threading. you may have to play those on "medium" settings.

If anyone is interested, I downloaded the Dragon age 2 demo. Played it on high settings, there were a few issues, like during cut scenes the computer would take a little while to load, but other than that played well and was a blast.

Personally I think the Beats edition is nicer. It sets it apart from the crowd, but is not too flashy like the m11x. I like the rubberized black paint used for the palm rest. The regular Envy 14 has a laser etched design on the lid I don't particularly like. It overall doesn't look too much different from the regular HP lines. On the other hand, the Beats edition shows finger prints easier. In the end it all comes down to personal preference really. I really like the black and red combo... others don't; but I've gotten more compliments about the looks of my BEats edition than any other laptop I've had. I think the Beats edition comes with slightly different software preloaded too... not sure if it still does. On the HP website its ~$100 more, but it comes with a larger 7500rpm HDD to cover the cost.

I've had both and they are both awesome only reason i traded my beats to hp for a regular is because of the radiance. The beats is the sexiest laptop ever! The red backlighting w/ the black paint is freaking awesome. I miss mine but i have gotten to love the regular envy as well (not having to wipe the computer off after each use).

I just ran Crysis 2 on my Envy 14 (i5-450m, 4gb ram) getting 35-45fps on "gamer" settings which is the lowest, and 25-38fps on "advanced" settings which is medium.

I am very impressed at the e14's ability to handle Crysis that well without overclock.

When I used MSI afterburner and upped the clock speed to 550mhz, I was getting 50fps on "gamer" settings.

it most likely will get a slight performance boost, but don't expect performance like the envy 17. The envy 14 is simply to small to house a powerfull card.
