I play GTA IV too which I'm sure is much more demanding. And I play Mafia II as well
-
Then it's probably just BO's fault.
-
thank god lol

Is there any way to get Need for Speed: Shift 2, and Splinter Cell: Conviction to run on the Envy 14?
All I get are artifacts and solid blocks of graphics.
PS - I have the most up-to-date drivers for my ATI 5650.... 11.x -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
get a screenshot of it.
they should run but your drivers could have a corrupted pixelshader (like what happened to me and dead space, took cleaning them out and restarting from scratch to fix it) -
Dead Space 2 and Crysis 2 run beautifully, but I'll take a screenshot when I'm back home....
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
well it depends on the thing.
Dead space 1 gave me crazy corrupted textures.
WoW gave me giant triangle textures all over the place.
WoW in dx11 mode worked fine.
so *shrugs* -
Is there a thread somewhere with the latest AMD driver that works with switchable graphics and instructions on how best to get them to work?
-
+1 for an updated graphics driver thread. I've installed the basic ones from HP.
-
No thread needed.
Install AMD 11.3 Mobility driver over the HP stock graphics driver. All functionality still works. -
Need for Speed Shift 2 works great on my end.
i think its somthing to do with your envy. -
Is there a bracket to replace the slot loading drive with a 2.5 inch drive? and could you post a link? thanks

This is guaranteed to work, but is overpriced IMO:
2nd hard drive or SSD Caddy for HP Envy 14 [OBHD9-SATA-SATA-NF] - $42.00 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks
You could probably find a better deal here:
9.5 sata drive caddy | eBay -
You playing it at max res??
-
what kind of improvements will i see if i upgrade the ram from 4gb to 8gb and which rams should i get?
-
no 1280 x 720 or whatever works just as fine better frames
1600 x 900 seems to stutter a bit. -
Which ATI driver version do you have?
-
Minimal. I can't think of any games that benefit from more than 4gigs of ram.
-
CCC 11.2
drivers are 8.821
might update soon whoknows -
What res/settings are you guys playing games like Crysis 2 and Bulletstorm at?
I just updated to 11.3 ATI graphics drivers from the stock ones installed on my Envy 14. I think prior, I had Bulletstorm at 1600x900 and it ran somewhat fine. Now with 11.3, I need to bump it down to 1280x720
Crysis 2 at 1280x720 on high setting feels a bit sluggish now too
So weird.. What are everyone elses experiences?
EDIT: Uninstalled 11.3 and reinstalled 10.8. Now Bulletstorm and Crysis are much smoother at 1280x720 AND 1600x900. Who would of thought..

So, just got my computer back from HP and nothing was fixed, actually got it back worse than before... awesome.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
adsjkl;. Yeah that can happen. Which sucks.
What was broken again? -

No clue honestly, Was just crashing in games with vertical stripes.
you guessed motherboard or gpu if i recall correctly -
Anyone having problems with 11.3 running games slowing than 10.8 on Envy 14 like I described in my last post??
-
if you're having problems with 11.3, why don't you roll back to 10.8?
-
Anyone know what settings I will be able to play Medal of Honor if I get it?
i5-450m,
4GB RAM
1600x900 radiance screen
I have the Envy 14t-1000 (one of the early models) -
I did, just wondering if others have experienced the same problem
-
Hey guys, I just received my new Envy 14 Beats Edition a couple days ago. I got the i5-480M with 8gb ram and the 5650 Radeon card. I'm practically new to the whole overclocking scene but I gave it a shot using MSi afterburner and found I could push my card to 500mHz for Core clock and 1000mHz for memory clock. I take it the memory clock is what help gets your FPS high correct? I ran 3dMark06 and got 7917 and ran a couple games, so far seemed stable.
However, when I would increase the Core clock and memory clock at same time, the max I could get out of them was 520/920 before 3dMark crashes.
On that same token, by leaving my memory clock stock and just increasing the core, I was able to push it out to 620/800.
Question is... which is better? Having a higher core/memory clock or having a balance between the two?
BTW, my temps never got past 70.
Thanks -
550/850 is good for me.
Keep it at a place where you don't see artifacting in games, OC the memory some, but OC the core more. The memory is rated at 800, while the core is rated up to 650. Also, when OCing, don't just push it up all the way. Go in smallish increments of 10 MHz or less while running furmark -
Ah I see, so I should bring down my memory clock from 1000 to say around near 800? The thing is, I dont see any artifacts with any of the clocks I set them to as I posted earlier. I've seen some people with memory clocks higher than 900, so I'm assuming its ok if I keep mine high?
Also, I haven't tried using furmark but I will in a bit, instead I use 3dmark06. I noticed on 3dmark my scores were higher when i oc'd the memory to 1000 compared to if I left it stock and oc'd the core to 620..
I appreciate the quick reply btw, thanks. -
So I'm rather new to the whole PC gaming scene and I just read about burning out your GPU. What are the odds of that happening with the envy 14? I haven't OC'd anything, everything is stock. I'd be rather irked if my GPU burns out.
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
rather low unless something dumb happens like say you block the vents or the thermal paste was applied wrong or you overclock and/or overvolt it too much
-
To take the best care of your envy, always make sure it is resting on a hard, flat surface such that it can properly ventilate itself. As long as you do this, and as long as your hardware is not defective, your chances of issues are very minimal.

Portal 2 is out.
It runs at 1600x900 at 16x anisoptric filtering, No AA, maxed out everything else, no vsync, and the like.
It gets roughly 35-40 fps.
At one point so far it dipped into the 20s. Setting shaders to medium fixed it for that area but since it so far has only been that one room and maybe one other spot I'm gonna just live with it for now.
The game is soooo awesome looking. Can't believe it's still the source engine -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
so wow.
apparently something does exist that can modify the voltage on the 5650 in launch envy 14s.
I'm not gonna mess with it right now since..yeah.
I don't wanna kill my computer by doing something stupid.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/572759-ocing-ati-cards.html
it does not let the envy 14's radeon gpu go back to the normal 0.9 volts when it is at rest.
not until you reboot or swap gpus. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
Important safety tip: "Don't mess with the voltage if you don't know what you're doing. Bad things will happen to your gpu. Permanent bad things."
I mean, this should be obvious but yeah. -
So I tried it out, and the software sort of works.
Setting voltage to anything higher than .9 will push actual voltage to .95
Setting voltage to anything higher than .95 will push the actual voltage to 1
You can't go above 1, and 1v is automatically used when the GPU is stressed, anyway (at least for i7's)
Changing the other clocks sets the right clocks for a fraction of a second, and then the clocks go back to the idle 100/150 clocks
:/
I was kind of hoping it could go higher -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
Well my gpu won't go above 0.95 volts while stressed so there is that.
As for setting clocks, I believe it just ups the max from 450/800 to xxx/xxx
meaning you need to stress it to see what it gives you.
..or it doesn't. I dunno. I didn't mess around that far. -
Oh, I see. Apparently it's one of the features.
Ok, I'm gonna try AMD Overdrive right now
edit: it doesn't work. D: -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
the clock speed boost works on mine.
*foolishly tries 600/900/1volt, gets an insta-crash*
...
well that was seen a mile away
*tries what he knows works, 550/800/0.95 volts*
edit: *tries some more things, comes to the same realization he had last time* It's not worth it to try OCing my card. It can't go up high enough to make any noticeable differences.
450/800 for life for me. Oh well, works well enough for most stuff. -
I'm trying out Portal 2 and it looks great on the HP Envy 14 ...
Only concern is that it looks like my CPU temperatures are running pretty hot when I play it ... It gets up to the 80-83 degrees Celsius range. Anyone experiencing the same thing? When I play Starcraft 2, I never go above 76 degrees Celsius -
Portal 2 is probably more CPU intensive, and you might have some dust in your heatsinks.
I might touch 80 or 81 for a few seconds when gaming, but 99% of the time it stays between 70-78C -
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
I was breaking 100 for a while (notably when updating Bioshock 2 in-game - patching it out of game was much better, not that my shoddy GPU handled it anyway). Now after cleaning out my heatsinks (not properly, too much work, but I opened up the bottom panel and got out what I could) I seem to be getting somewhat lower temps, but definitely hotter than what I was getting at the end of last summer (when the ambient temps were hotter than they are now). I kind've want to open her up fully and do a complete cleaning, along with putting in the Arctic Silver 5 I bought several months ago, but I don't have an extra computer to view the service manual on...
Maybe I'll compile the relevant diagrams and print all of them out miniaturized on a couple sheets of paper... -
When gaming I set my max CPU to 85% (through a power management profile), it doesnt get quite as hot and the performance impact is very minimal.
It never gets above 70C. -
Hey guys, i hope i don't hijack this thread but what settings are you guys playing Dead Space 2 at, im currently 800X600 on Medium settings and i barely crank out 30 FPS, is that normal for the E14? I'm on ati too!
-
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
that means you probably need to go to your graphics settings, go down to powerplay, detick the checkbox, hit apply, and retick the checkbox.
Powerplay does that sometimes (ok every time you unplug the computer for me) with the envy 14. -
Also make sure you are on High Performance mode rather than Power Saving.
I kept my laptop on Power Saving even while plugged in and didn't realize that the Power Saving mode was throttling my GPU when I was gaming. -
WOW, ok thank you so much! Now i'm playing 720p high settings with over 50 FPS, thanks
-
My trusty (lasted 4 years w/o problems before the CPU conked out)Sager NP2092 died on me about a month ago. After obsessive research, settled on the HP Envy 14. Was about to use the 25% OFF coupon that would have garnered me a souped up envy with an i7 for about $1250, but fell so in love with the radiance screen that I decided to downgrade the processor.
Took a gamble and ordered a i5 520m, Radiance, 8GB RAM, 160 gb SSD envy for $1200 on ebay yesterday. Excited for my new laptop (despite the old processor) and hope the radiance screen is worth the hit in processor performance!
Anyone else have a similar setup and have any advice for settings/tweaks/etc for gaming? I really want to run Portal 2 with decent specs. -
I have the i5-450m, radiance, 4GB RAM and 160GB SSD. Don't worry about the CPU, my CPU hasn't struggled in any games for me yet, my gpu has on the other hand. The SSD is a great choice, the only thing I can say is download the Intel SSD Toolbox and run TRIM once in a while, oh and go to properties of the C: Drive (right click), Hardware, double click on the 160GB SSD Drive, Policies, and deselect the two boxes, not needed for SSDs, all it does in this case is wear it down faster.
Apart from that just keep ATI updated and I would turn Power Play off because it's just annoying for me.
I know I didn't really give advice on gaming but yeh... lol
