Is it possible to upclock the GPU on battery? Or are you saying it automatically switches to Intel IGP? Call me crazy, but one of several reasons I'm choosing this laptop is ability to play games for an hour or so on battery. The M11x spoiled me in that respect (over 2 hours BF:BC2 on battery!).

it should be possible, just change to the ati on battery and use amdgpu clock tool to set your desired clocks. Its worked on other laptops with the 5650's so I am sure will be fine with the E14.

I will test it when mine arrives.

PS dont expect much life in the battery, you may need that slice for a 2hr BFBC2 sesh!

With these low 3dMark06 scores I have to ask if anyone has checked the clock speeds on the 5650?

    ok first.

the ATI card has powerplay on.

you probably can turn that off to stop it from throttling while on battery.

...and no I guess no one has checked the clock speeds.

can someone run GPUZ and see if the clocks are shown whilst on ATI?

Edit - actually comparing scores with other 5650's they look like stock clocks if the scores are around the 6700 range.

    100/150 while idle.

    oh god dammit HP

GPU clock is 450. Memory 800.

    it's underclocked

edit: or well it's clocked at the lowest manufacturer core speed. (rated for 450-650)

I'm just waiting for an updated video card driver + CCC. I think, if I'm not mistaken, we are on 10.3 . For other cards a big performance increase was noted at 10.4, and 10.6 just came out last month... Here's to hoping somethings is coming down the pipeline.

why didn't hp put the ati 5830 in envy 14 when many of the users overclock 5650 and it performs equal to the 5830 and consumes about 25 watts whereas 5830 consumes 24 watts max tdp.
hope they include it when the sandy bridge cpus are put into it.

I believe the consensus is that it wouldn't physically fit in the ENVY 14 with everything else they have crammed in the chasis.

Although, doing a Google Image search on the two cards they look identical on product wiki

    http://www.productwiki.com/upload/images/ati_mobility_radeon_hd_5650-400-400.jpg
    http://www.productwiki.com/upload/images/ati_mobility_radeon_hd_5830_1.jpg

Then again, these could just be stock images because it looks like both use the 109-B96031-0?9 ID.

Wonder if they gave the option to get it without ODD if they could have configured something more powerful in there. Would have been nice to have the option to even have an HD 5850 in there.

Well they said they added the ODD back in based on user feedback.

ENVY 14 - "We've added the ODD back in based on user feedback"

    The future:
ENVY 13 2.0 - "Based on additional user feedback we have removed the ODD to allow for a better video card".
ENVY 14 2.0 - "Due to various complaints, users have requested bluray ODD. So yeah, it's back in".
ENVY 12 - "You know what, forget it... no ODD and no video card. You happy now!"

    Back to more on topic:

Is there a way to change the clock speed to somewhere in that range of 650?

    10.6 release is installabe.

install 10.6 alpha. let it get to that blinking cursor page for awhile.

grumble and wait for like 5 minutes (important, so it finishes installing stuff)

    power cycle laptop.

    install 10.6 release.

be in awe that the display came back and it actually installed correctly.

Just ran the FFXIV benchmark on the low setting and scored a 1455. Got to say that is very disappointing, as I would have thought it'd at least get to 2000, which is the playable level.

the 10.6 alpha file actually HAD x64 drivers in it too. even if the zip didn't say it had 'em

I'm not sure how they coded that thing but there are even some desktop gaming rigs that are getting some pretty low scores with that program.

I'm wondering if they are being extremely conservitive in their scores as a prevenative "you are experiencing lag because your system isn't up to speed, our coding is perfect" scenerio.

    it's still low for a 5650.

but it's better than the 10.3 drivers.

the problem is that our 5650 is underclocked by HP.

    or at least deunderclocking.

I'm at 550/800 thanks to msi afterburner and a modification to the settings in the config file

I think catalyst 10.6 has a bug where fps keeps dipping to 0 for a split second every 5-8 seconds.

Would be awesome if manufacturers listed the GPU speeds of their laptops. Would love to see HP try to explain that the GPU in their "performance" laptop is slower than in their mainstream line.

What is most disturbing, is that HP has obviously determined that the optimal clock speed for the Envy to be lower than most other laptops with that GPU. Most likely, due to heat and noise.

Anyway, I will be interested to hear how things go with people who "overclock" their GPU. Hopefully, it doesnt turn your computer into a jet engine or, worse, fry it completely.

    7510 3DMarks after overclocking.
core clock set at: 552 (max is 585)
memory clock set at: 800 (max is 1040)
    gpu max temp: 59c

so still have a little wiggle room.

Is that with 10.3 or 10.6? Since the 10.6 drivers seem buggy, I wonder what scores would be with the 10.3 drivers.

I haven't seen an instance where someone was able to get their 3DMark06 into the 5 digit territory (3DMark05, yes).

To those concerned with scores and do not wish to Over Clock, here are some numbers to look over.

    Notebook Check scores using 3Dmark06:

(Notebook check likes to use the 3Dmark05 for their comparison graphs for what ever reason.)

    ATI 5650 (ENVY 14)
    min: 5874, avg: 6874, max: 7870

NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M (nVida "equivalent")
    min: 5961, avg: 6662, max: 7700

ATI 5730 (ATI 5650 Over Clocked)
    min: 7226, avg: 7783, max: 8060

    So, 6.8K in a 3Dmark06 sounds reasonable.

Also keep in mind what cpu you are using. Those max scores were all scored by pc's with i7's (although I think with a little tweaking we might be able to beat it  )

Have you tried higher memory clocks? Another user reported crashes at anything over 800 or so.

GPU max temp is at idle or when running 3dmark? If running 3dmark, that is almost too good to be true.

GPU max temp was when running 3dmark

I just tried overclocking the memory and I got major crashes.
    Game: Fallout 3
    GPU: 580mhz
    Memory: 900mhz

At full res and high settings, It crashed immediately.
At lower res and high settings, it crashed after 10 min and some intense fighting.

    Max FPS: 60
    Min FPS: 42

I ran some more benchmarks, including msi kombuster, and my gpu does not go over 64c. It averages around 59 to 62. This is while over-clocking the core speed to near max and leaving the memory alone.
