The non-touch display has a bezel about the same size as the touchsmart version. I have both of them in front of me now - one is mine and setting up one for an employee.

The non-touchsmart is lighter (touchsmart display = heavy) and has a little bit less reflective glare, but neither screen is mind-blowing. They're both decent, non-IPS displays.

This is a dirty little secret of HP's on-site warranty. I bought one once, years ago, only to discover the same thing. It covers really simple part swaps - RAM, HDD - but if there is any doubt as to what's going on, where by 'doubt' I mean 'possibly involves the mainboard,' then they won't do it. Waste of money.

Thanks for your answer. Do you know any IPS notebook with an i7 Haswell and a comparable graphic card out there? That would give me another option to consider. thanks again!

To update where I'm at, should anyone be curious. The 17t-j100 died on a Thursday, and that Friday I had HP sending out a box for repair. That Friday I also ordered a new motherboard for the Dell 1749. The HP went out on FedEX on Monday, arrived at the repair center the next day around noon. My new mainboard for the 1749 showed up on Wednesday. HP replaced the mainboard and shipped the 17t-j100 back on the Friday the same week they got it, and it was delivered back to me the following Monday. So in total, I was out a machine 11 days with the HP. I fixed the 1749 in about an hour, which also had a blown out mainboard. I'm happy with the performance of the machine, just not thrilled it died having it less than 24 hours.

Has anyone with a 17t placed an mSSD into the system? Am I correct in assuming that it requires removing the entire bottom shell to get at the thing?

Yep correct, I received my 17 envy laptop today... it isnt touch but i opened it up today to get to msata slot. had to take the whole base off but managed to get to it. i put in 480gb msata. still cant it to boot when hdd is in. without hdd it seems to boot in fine. i was reading about bootice bootloader which allows to boot into windows using msata. gonna give it a go later today.

    Good deal.

Second question for those that may know... why is it so bloody hard to find the same A/C adapter that shipped with the laptop on HP's site? They recommend on the checkout page a 90W slim adapter, but the one that ships (at least for mine) is 120W. And I cannot find that model on their on site elsewhere. Does anyone know if H6Y87AA#ABL from their main US accessories page will work for the newer Envy line?

Funny story. I purchased the 17" 3D 3000 CTO back in January 2012 and it went bad in January 2014. The warranty expires this month. It turns out they wouldn't be able to replace the 3D screen and will be giving me a brand new PC with the following specs. Will the 750M be able to play games like battlefield 4 and is it switchable graphics?

    Yes, the 750M is switchable.

It should also do at least as well as the 7690M, if not considerably better due to the added memory (1GB vs. 4 GB and a faster clock. It's not a high-end mobile GPU, but neither was the 7690M. You are getting a pretty good deal in a warranty replacement of a 2 year old computer!

They all have 2.5" HDD so you can swap them out for a SSD. If you mean a secondary SSD then you need a mSATA or replace the optical bay in the 17".

I did mean is there space (or room), to install a secondary SSD?
and it is a 15", and there is no optical drive.
so, please, do you know, or can you tell me how to find out if there is room inside of my new 15" Envy, for me to install an SSD as a secondary drive?

The 15" does NOT have room for a full size SSD as secondary but you can install the smaller mSATA SSD which is just as fast. I have a 256GB in mine.

    thank you very much.
would you please clarify for me. do you mean that there IS room for me to install an mSATA SSD as a secondary drive?

I need an SSD to install a piano software program onto.
if there is room, would you please me give a link to a good mSATA SSD.
I've been looking to replace the optical drive on my couple year old Sony Vaio
    with a Samsung EVOseries 840, 250 GB.

Yes... the mSATA SSD is a secondary drive. There is a slot for it just next to the primary HDD slot.

I bought this one when it was on sale for under $200 (you can probably find it that cheap too): Newegg.com - Plextor M5M PX-256M5M mSATA 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

    thank you very much.
I have been reading a bit. is it very hard to install this and get it operational. I do not have super skills in this department. but I can follow step by step instructions.
would it possibly be as simple as a few rather easy steps.
    physically install the SSD.
    go to computer disk management.
initialize and/or format it. name the drive.
create a partition (not quite up to speed on that one.)
    rock and roll........

I am thinking that if I do this it will void my warranty. might be willing to risk it anyway.

also, I read something about, that HP Support and the manual say something along the lines of "no you can't do this.....", and
"you can but the size limit is 28 GB".........something like that....I'd have to go back and find it.......
might even see if my boss at work would install it for me.....he's great with this stuff.
    this is my computer:

That's exactly the one I have. Super uber easy to install. Turn laptop over, remove battery, unscrew door, open door, install mSATA, close door.

The HP support what you read only applies to a mSATA used as cache, not storage. There is no limitation if used for storage.

mSATA is the exact same as SATA but smaller so there is no speed difference.

    wow. thank you very much.
    awesome.
would you please tell me anything/everything else that I need to know to set it up then, or configure it, or whatever stuff I have to do, before I can put the piano program files on it, and start using it?
is it a simple matter of, say for example:
    go to computer disk management.
initialize and/or format it. name the drive.
create a partition (not quite up to speed on that one.) do I even have to do that?
will I have any problems because of window 8.1 goofiness and or antivirus program stuff?
and do you know if it will void the warranty?

    Will not void any warranties.

It works like any other secondary drive so you load files, programs on it like you do any other secondary drive.

Formatting and set up is just like any other drive in computer disk management. Nothing special. When you format it you set up a normal partition on it.

I am running Windows 8.1 and there is no issues.

It will be just like any other drive that you install on any other computer. If you have done it once then you know how to do it.

    Super thank you.
    Will order an SSD now.
I am not super experienced with the formatting and set up.
May be posting back, to ask for help, if I have problems.

    update: ordered the SSD.

    this is my first HP.

update: does anyone have any thoughts about if anything can be done about the keyboard flex on this notebook? it is bothering me a bit.

it makes it hard to type. lots of typing errors. the flex is one of the reasons.

I just put the Plextor SSD in. called Plextor for help, when nothing happened for a few minutes.
    then, it booted normally.
I was already on the phone with Plextor support.
super helpful. the guy walked me through formatting, naming the volume. worked like a dream.
so far, so good. thank you so much for your fantastic help, KillroyWasHere. you have done me a humungous favor.

So my first gen radiance envy 14 is biting the dust and I have been looking at buying new laptops. Currently I'm looking at a custome Horize laptop maybe with a 8970M.

I was wondering if there is some newly released envy (maybe a 15 inch) which is coming out this year or recently come out with some sort of decent graphics card, maybe a GTX770M? I was quite satisfied with my envy 14 and I might be interested in getting another envy but I find it hard to find information on the latest envy's and how long ago they were released (if for example it was over a year ago there is no point). Is there maybe any information about some upcoming envy's to be announced?

keyboard flex on my Envy feels pretty bad.
if I could do it over, this would be a deal breaker for me.
I read a review on line, by what seemed to be a very on the level, reviewer. he said there were no issues with kb flex.
well mine is so bad, that I used an external kb for awhile today.
sorry for being negative. am trying to save you pain.
I have a sony vaio thats maybe 3 years old. the kb is as solid as a rock. this Envy kb is like trying to type on a trampoline. tons of typing errors. very unpleasant.

The keyboard flex is pretty bad but it's kinda forced me to touch type a bit lighter and nimbler which is probably a good thing overall. Lemons and lemonade etc...

I thought that this Envy notebook would be phenomenal.
    in some ways, it is.
but the kb flex.............I am constantly having to correct errors of omission.
i.e., I type words and many letters are not there. its a bummer man.
    good comment about the lemons.............hahahaha

Just got my 15t-j100. I notice no keyboard flex and this is coming from a Thinkpad user. However, I find it hard to type on the Envy 15. I keep missing key strokes when I type, especially the "a". Other than that, better quality notebook than I had expected. About to pop in a Travelstar 7200rpm 1tb HDD I had bought for an enclsoure.

Hey guys, I skipped a generation (Ivy) going from a DV6T-Quad i7-2630. I'm reading about the clicky mousepad like the MBP and I'm not looking forward to it. They should've kept it as before where you could turn off the pad. That is great when you're using an external mouse for the most part. I killed the screen on that one by dropping it from a mere 8 inches and upgraded that unit to a 1920 HD screen.

I really like the glass screen that the MBPs have and I saw that the touch screens have that as well, even though it makes them heavier. Do you guys find that the quality of the touchscreen models is much better than the non-touch screen models? It appears as though the bezel is thinner on the touch models. Wrong?

Good lord, why did they make it such a pain in the to put a mSSD in the 17t? Yeesh. For some reason the drive borked my install on the main HDD1 slot and I lost most of the weekend putting the OS back together, even with backups. And then I had to crack the case a second time as the sound wasn't working (though nothing looked unplugged). But now I've got 240 GIG SSD + 240 GIG mSSD + 1 TB magnetic. That second SSD is going to be VM and backup storage... woot.

That's really high for the cable. I don't need the caddy. I am disappointed that it didn't come with the cable like the envy 17 3000.

Sadly, not many folks make those kinds of parts. It was about the same cost for a cable/caddy for my Studio 17 as well. It is rather crap they don't just ship them with those parts already inserted, but I suppose that's just the cost of doing business.

I'm considering the 15t-j100 and had a quick question about swapping the HDD for an SSD. I ran into an issue in the past with a Dell laptop where I could not use the recovery disk that I created to install the OS onto my SSD because the SSD was smaller than the original HDD. Has anyone swapped in a SSD and successfully installed the version of Windows that comes with the laptop (not a separate retail disk version)?

Alright, before I pull the trigger I just wanted to make sure I understood the issues with the laptop...

    • Potential for screen issues ("Screen Door") depending on which display you get
    • Build quality concerns (flex in the keyboard, general weakness of the laptop)

Are there any other common issues with the laptop? I did check out the HP Envy m6-k025dx in Best Buy and the screen seemed OK to me. The viewing angles weren't the best but they were better than all the 768p laptops. Is the 1080p display the same?

I was also between two configurations...

    684.99, AMD:

    Windows 8.1 64
    AMD Quad-Core A10-5750M Accelerated Processor
    2GB AMD Radeon™ HD 8750M Discrete
15.6-inch diagonal Full HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1920x1080)
    8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    750GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
    No Additional Office Software
    Security Software Trial
    6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
No Internal DVD or CD Drive
    Backlit Keyboard
HP TrueVision HD Webcam w/ integrated digital mic
    802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth® [1x1]

    Intel, $895.99

    Windows 8.1 64
    4th generation Intel® Core™ i7-4702MQ Processor
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M Graphics with 4096MB of dedicated video memory
15.6-inch diagonal Full HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1920x1080)
    8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    750GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
NO mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache
    No Additional Office Software
    Security Software Trial
    6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery
No Internal DVD or CD Drive
    Backlit Keyboard
HP TrueVision HD Webcam w/ integrated digital mic
    802.11 AC WLAN and Bluetooth® [2x2]

I don't know that I need the power of the 4702MQ + GT 750m, but the A10-5750 is (obviously) significantly weaker. I really just want to be able to play stuff like Diablo 3, Skyrim, etc... at reasonable settings at the native resolution. Any thoughts?

The AMD model will be able to play Diablo 3 and Skyrim, but probably not at reasonable settings and/or native resolution. I personally have similar specs to your Intel option, and i cant tell you first hand you will be able to play both Skyrim and Diablo 3 at reasonable setting and native resolution.

Im playing TitallFall with the Intel model/specs on High and 1080p

First leg me apologize if I bring up some already talked about topics...

I have a Envy 17-3070nr and I'm looking to get a Envy 17-j029nr. I have a 16 GB of Ram, along with a 120 GB msata boot drive and 2 x 1.5TB 9.5 mm drives in the 17-3070nr that I'd like to just put in the 17-j029nr. Going through the 120 pages of this thread it seems like there is a work around to get these new Envys to boot to the msata with a bootloader? As long as I don't update the bios?

I have a 17-j029nr lined up for 800 bucks. Seems to be a nice deal. Any help with this would be appreciated.

I just installed an ssd in my 15" envy.
But I have it as a secondary drive.
I bought a Plextor brand ssd from Amazon.
    Plextor has excellent customer support.
If you want to, maybe contact them?

i have a macbook and i decided to buy a windows pc for my new IT program i tried running couple it applications on my mac but it got super slow since i have the first aluminum model with duo core 2.4ghz and 4gb or ram hopefully my choice of a laptop was good, i bought mine for 890$ total , i went to BB and saw the laptop but it was too expensive so i didnt bother playing with it that much but i decided to go to hp.com and saw they were selling it for 729$ with all my customization it came to 915$ plus tax called them and they said they can give me 75$ off so it ended it up for 890$ which is a great price then i found this thread and i thought to my self yupp just wasted my time buying this laptop blah blah but decided to go again to BB and check the machine out see the door effect and the keyboard flex and how heavy the laptop is and let me tell you first the door effect was only visible if i got super close to the laptop other wise i dont see it, i checked the red, orange, black and white colors and everything was great, although i do understand what people are saying about the TN display its no IPS but ive never worked on my computer from the sides.. always looking at it straight so im good. now keyboard flex YES there is a flex but so little i didnt notice it at first but because i was looking for it i saw it.. i used the keyboard and wrote a full page on it and it was fine made couple mistakes but i blv thats because its a new keyboard to me, the weight well its a 17" but it wasnt so bad my 13" macbook is 5.0Ib on hp it says 6.1Ib so not by much
overall i am happy with what i ordered hopefully i get it on time by thursday because so far for the past 4 days its still in Alaska
ohh one last thing when i went to check the laptop at BB i saw a dead pixel in the middle of the screen at first i didnt notice it but once i put that black pic to see the blacks it was staring at me and laughing :0:0:0 so hopefully i get a perfect one

i am going to upgrade my ram to either 12gb or 16gb
also planing on adding a second hard drive most likely SSD
quick question can i clone my 1tb hhd to the new ssd and call it a day? or do i have to reinstall other stuff? and get into the BIOS?
also im thinking of adding a mSATA a 128gb or 256gb just to use it as a back up is that possible to have all three ? run the windows and apps on my ssd 256gb after cloning it, have my 1tb hhd for movies and stuff and have my 128gb msata as a back up for certain files??

thank you and my apologies if these questions were answered before

Yes, you can have all three. I've got a BulletProof 240 GIG mSSD, a 850 Evo 256 GIG SSD and the 1TB mechanical drive (came with the system) all running together. The mechanical is my storage for all things development and pictures and video. The mSSD is for my virtual machines. The Evo is my main system drive. All of them play nicely together. Be aware you'll have to disassemble the entire lower case to get at the mSSD space. And any cloning software included with the SSD should do fine, if the one shipped by Samsung is anything to go by.

Does anyone know if the HP Envy 17t-j100 Select Edition with NVIDIA GeForce 750M 2gb memory is better than the HP Envy 17t-j100 Leap Motion Quad Edition with NVIDIA GeForce 750M 4gb memory?

Essentially my question is if the Select Edition is GDDR5 or GDDR3. Which configuration is better for gaming (DayZ, Battlefield, Titanfall, etc).

I have to pull the trigger on one today.

    Thank you all!

for some weird reason i was checking fedex today and my laptop was in alaska on saturday and now its in china :S ill have to contact hp and see wth is going on

Thanks, good to know. Unfortunately it looks like the Envy 15t-j100 Select no longer has a coupon code available. I'll need to wait until one pops up again.

Would the newly available GT 840m be better than the GT 750m?

My conclusion is that the 840 improves battery life under gaming. The 750 still supports higher max resolutions

Hm alright. So for trying to game at the native 1080p you'd go with the 750m?

I went through the specs on Nvidia and was surprised to find that the 740/450M had GDDR5 as an option and not even displayed on the specs of the 840m. I think that battery life is the play on the 840m which is why it is a mere $10 more when you configure on HP's site.
