If the laptop you will receive has a better LCD, please let we know the model of the screen.
TIA

Guys, aside from the screen, has anyone experienced high cpu temps on load? I used HWmonitor and my idle 4702MQ temps seem fine (39-40C) but when running BF2 and video encoding, the highest yet was 95C (91C average for ten minutes on encoding using handbrake) with an ambient room temp of 70F. Plus, the AWSD keyboard area gets super hot when playing games. On my desktop stock clock/fan (Sandy 2600), doing the same encode/game play and same temp, I get a peak of 69C.
-
Best thing you can do about this, download throttlestop, under clock your CPU a little maybe x20 to drop the voltage down, will lower temps about 10c, clock your GPU up slightly as this will not use anymore voltage and temp increase will be very slight. -
I've decided to change the poor "BrightView" AUO TN-display and I will order an LG-Philips IPS screen.
Matte or Glossy... this is the problem!
What do you prefer and why ? -
Glossy seem to give better contrast (so they say), but really have a bunch of reflections of coloured object is no help. I say anti-glare all the way where you can get it, less reflection mean that you use in brightly lit environments, and overall less eye strain.

What do you think? -
Really depends on personal perference.
Personally I like anti-glare no matter what if I can get it, as I hate seeing reflections when all I want to see it just the screen. -
Thanks guys for your help on the temps. I'm getting use to the screen and may keep it (have two more days to consider before the return window closes) it just seems like down clocking the chip would bring it back to sandy performance (which is still great), so there's pretty much no improvement other than Intel making more money since they can yield more chips compared to sandy? I was thinking about waiting for a new chip, skylake, but that's getting even smaller, so I can imagine the heat produced by that. Seems like if you got a sandy mobile chip, you got a better overall machine (better for the whole ecosystem in the laptop as it's one less component generating so much heat), regardless of the 5-10% performance gain that's nulled if you have to down clock?

On the web I've found both glossy and matte description for the same model.
I'm on contact with a local seller of spare parts.
He says that there is at least one IPS model which can replace the AUO B156HTN03.2
I hope I can say more about in the next days. -
About the screen replacement, I'm not sure even you you get the perfect screen it'll workout "cleanly", as it looks like you can, but you'll have tear the bottom tabs near the hinge to get to the screws.
(I think it applies to the 15" too, this is for the 17.3 screen replacement.)

Hi guys,
Anyone has experience to install mSata SSD + original 1TB to Envy 15?
Do I need to format original 1TB drive and delete all partitions?
What i did:
1) Remove 1TB HDD and install Plextor 128GB mSATA
2) Disable Security Boot in BIOS
3) Install Windows from USB memory stick to mSATA drive
4) Windows startup fully from the mSATA
5) Shutdown
6) Plug HDD back
7) Power
Windows still loads from 1TB HDD and not from mSata.
Removed 1TB HDD and Windows loads from Plextor mSata.
Do I need to format / delete partitions on 1TB HDD before load Windows from mSata?
128GB mSata (with clean Windows) + 1TB HDD (with original HP Windows) and the Windows loads from 1 TB HDD only and not from mSata.
Any ideas? -
Once you go into the BIOS, you will need to disconnect the HDD cable, let boot from the mSATA, connect HDD back up again. For some reason (HP's fault) if you enter the BIOS after you create this setup, then you will have to do this over again. It never use to be like that. -
I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone owning the HP ENVY 15t-j100. I've had it since october, and really like it, but lately I've noticed that when I click on a video to watch it full screen, it will revert back to small screen. it'll only happen once, but happens every time I watch a video. could it just be the chrome browser I use?

Ugh. On the TouchSmart 17.3 I kept, right after the 21 day return policy, I'm finding dust between the internal display panel and glossy exterior panel -- I assume these glossy/touch panels should be sealed to prevent that?
I'm currently on hold with HP support. -
Mine is not touchscreen so this is not a problem, but in touchscreen models the dust can enter between the touchscreen and the LCD. -
You are going from 1366 x 768 panel to a 1920 x 1080 panel, is that correct? -
The AUO TN has very very bad viewing angles and strange annoying vertical stripes -
-
The italian seller is making me mad. The LCD has not been shipped yet, and he don't tell me the exact model I will receive.
Is there a place where I can find a cross reference for LCD panels?
Sellers say different things about mine AUO (p/n B156HW03.2):
- there is NO IPS compatible screen,
- the LG156WF4 SL C1 may work,
- the LG156WF4 SL B2 is compatible,
Who can I trust? -
-
I'll be interested to see how your screen transplant goes. The screen is not a massive issue for me but if I could get a better one for relatively cheap I'd spring for it.
-
The Envy lid shell is rather huge, and will fit pretty much all size panel depth, if you look through the service manual, if I remember correctly there is about 3 sizes depth wise, one of them is actually a IPS screen which is listed in the later service manual j100 series. All the 15j models are basically the same except for a few changes along the way, the chassis does not usually change any through most of any series of whatever notebook.
-
Some LCD sellers say that many panels are not compatible due to:
- different voltage interface (same connector)
- different pins connection within the same connector
- different panel tickness
- different mechanical brackets
I don't know if what they say is real, but, in order to not make a mistake, I've choose to trust in a local seller that select an IPS compatible for me, but he has not sent me the panel yet, nor told me the exact model I will receive.
I hope that it will arrive soon, and than I will tell you the model to look for. -

Hello. I have bought an envy 15 model j104el. It should arrive tomorrow. I hope it will have the decent screen and not the auo (even if I'm sure that even the auo would be better than the screen in my old Acer 5742g). Also the spec sheet in the site where I bought it says that the 740 m has gddr5 memory. I doubt it, but I hope it's true.
I will use it for light graphic work (I plan to connect it to a dell ultrasharp aniway) and music production work in ableton live. I hope to be pleased by this laptop. I would have liked an asus n550 but they were all sold here, and I had to buy asap because the old PC died on me.
Dunno, I've read mixed review on this laptop, here it's being criticized a lot, but around the net it seems people like it. I even read reviews saying the screen is good. Dunno, I think those people were less tech wavy than the people here. Aniway I will report on the quality of mine as soon as it arrives.
Is it easy to switch to win 7? I plan to format it as soon as it arrives, don't even wanna try win 8 for music.
Also, could someone with a colorimeter tell me the rgb coverage and the gamut extension of the screen? I'm not too concerned with the viewing angle and luminosity, but I would like decent balanced colors after calibration if possible... -
If you get an AUO (the probability is very high), you will see youself that this LCD hasn't any good viewing angle.
Colors are not well balanced (too much blue), and washed-out.
I also see annoying vertical stripes every 2 pixel.
I hope your screen will be better than mine.
The video memory is DDR3, not DDR5.
Here you can find a professional review
Review HP Envy 15-j011sg Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews
about the display, they say:
"HP's label "BrightView" must be meant ironically.
The Full HD screen (AUO32ED) in the review sample is anything but compelling.
With the midfield brightness of only around 250 cd/m² and a brightness distribution of 84% there is nothing to brag about.
Points are also deducted for the laptop's high black level. 0.6 cd/m² let dark game and video scenes look grayish.
The miserable viewing angles do not make things better either.
No matter how the display is turned or tilted, at least one-half of the screen tends to deviate in color and brightness (can be seen well in movie bars).
Consequently, the user will always be busy with readjusting the display, but will never achieve an optimal result.
The contrast is also disappointing in addition to the black level, and viewing angles.
Just below 430:1 are fairly modest.
Higher-quality (IPS) screens, such as LG's LP156WF4-SPB1 in Asus' N550JV-CN201H, achieve two or three times as much.
A quite pale and unsaturated image results alongside the poor color space (73% of sRGB; 50% of AdobeRGB).
Our CalMAN tests confirmed the subjective impression.
Amateur photographers will throw their hands up in horror in view of the rates (grayscale, gamma, color accuracy, etc.).
The screen tends to shift towards blue, as is common for laptops." -
Thanks for the reply. Yes I saw that review, as well as that of the 17 inch model on the same site which receives a little more praise. I was hoping the 104el would have the better panel but it seems I will get the auo.
Well, in the end after calibration do you think one can achieve at least a decent color balance?(it only covers 75 % of srgb, but I would like to have this 75 % displayed correctly if anything) I'm not too concerned about the angles as they are the same of my old Acer so I'm used to it.
If not, any news from the user who attempted the screen switch? -
I hope the angles of yours could be fine for you (let we know, please).
I'm the user that is waiting for the IPS panel... the italian seller hasn't already sent me the screen (I've paid the total 10 days ago !!!)... (s)he is making me mad!
-
I'm Italian too.. Now that I look at your username I suspect you too, am I right? Lol
Aniway, my envy should arrive in 2/3 hours... Finger crossed, let's hope all is well and that downgrading it to win 7 will be easy! Can you give me the link of the website that sells the panels? -
).
I prefer to NOT tell you the website of the site selling the panel, because I'm very afraid of the reliability of the seller (as written before, (s)he making me mad).
I will write something more when I will receive the panel. -
Hi, there are news.
The panel would be a LG-Philips LP156WF4 SLB6.
It would be the replacement panel from HP for the SLB2 version that fixes the orange/red issues.
Tomorrow it will be here, I hope.
The price I've payed it is twice the SLB2 version you can find on web selling sites.
I will tell you in 1/2 days if the panel is ok for mine (our) laptop(s). -
The shipping has been delayed, the LCD has not arrived yet ;(

I wonder if you guys could give me some advice....
I am interested in the HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j104ea
I think the model has everything I need however I am unsure about the screen, I have read many reviews but they seem to cover a large range of model numbers over quite a time scale. The reviews seem to say the screens are not good. The 15-j104ea however has this screen 39.6 cm (15.6) diagonal FHD BrightView LED-backlit touch screen (1920 x 1080) , I wondered if anyone on the forum owns this model and would be good enough to give me their opinion of it. The additional spec of the model is below.. I am hoping that this recent screen may be better than some of the original ones reviewed over the past 12 months or so. I am hoping this new screen has both clarity and a good amount of brightness....
Many thanks.....

Mine is a 15j-104el.
It's a 2014 model, but the panel is the same of 2013 models: it's terribly bad!
The chance that 15j-104ea has the same panel is very very high.
The panel is manufactured by AUO (part number B156HTN03.2), and I found that is has been "Discontinued" !

Thanks for replying Antonio...
That's a shame, the spec for the Envy is great for my needs. Its just the screen that lets is down. What a shame, I will though contact HP and ask them who manufactured the screen on 15j-104el. It is advertised on the HP website so I am wondering if it may be a different model screen.
Anyhow thanks for the information, much appreciated...

When I've asked about a model indicated as IPS in the official specifications, they reply that it
does have the capability of having an IPS screen, as well some do not have the IPS screen, and are just full high-definition screens

So frustrated with this machine. No matter what I do, it will not stay in hibernate. Powers itself on at some point and consumes all of the battery. Even asked for support's help. Something continues to wake it up. Turned off: wake timers, wake on lan, etc
-
Would you buy it again?
Would you recommend it? -
Update 1:
The screen I've received is damaged, today are 6 days that I'm waiting for a new one (hoping that it will be good !).
Update 2:
A friend of mine has bought a Pavilion about month ago for about half the price of my Envy.
To my great astonishment it has a good LCD (although it is NOT a FullHD).
The model is: LGD039F that very probably should be a LP156WH3-TLS2 ( Recenzja Toshiba Satellite L50-A (15,6", Intel Core i3-3120M, NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M))
It's a TN screen produced by LG-Philips with very similar (declared) viewing angles to AUO installed in our Envys, but it's pretty better.

The LCD is not excellent, but with it I didn't have the necessity to continuously adjust the angle of the screen as with my AUO32ED (B156HTN03.2).
For the price (495€, the Pavilion (i5 4th generation ULV, 4GB RAM, 750GB HDD, DVD burner, ... a decent quality LCD) I think it's still a good deal.
The Envy has good to very good specifications, but the LCD is very crappy.
It's about one month that I'm asking myself why HP has done a so terrible choice. -
The B156HTN03.2 (AUO32ED) is DISCONTINUED but HP is currently selling Envy laptops with these screens.
Why? -
-
I'm thinking I'd like to replace the wireless card within my HP Envy. Specifically I want to know if anyone has installed this Wireless-AC card from Intel in their Envy laptop. I currently have an Envy 17.
Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260
I'm also getting this fan situation I created fixed as well and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on where I can go to as far as stores/companies for that kind of job? I know I could probably do the wireless card part myself but just in case I'm busy or I want them to do everything at once and not have to worry about it.
Thanks in advance. -
As long as the card fits, it should be fine. I've also got an Envy 17. There was one mentioned somewhere in this thread that's the same line, but you'd have to search. I've got the Wireless-N (with BlueTooth) variant of that card and it was just plug and play. Once I upgrade my router to AC, I'll be picking up a 7260 with AC as well.
