About this time last year we heard of the new models for 2013 which was the mostly the Envy J line, which basically was a redesign of the 2012 DV6. Different of course but in a par and inline around that particular price point.

No idea what the resign will look like. I am expecting these to be standard features.

i7-4710MQ (optional i7-4810MQ and i7-4910MQ), these are unfortunately not newer stepping. I was hoping that thermals could have been improved with a new stepping, as it is just a refresh, so not going to happen.

Nvidia GT 840M, based on Maxwell. This is already out, so basically no brainer. Hoping for a 850M with 128bit bus and a return to GDDR5, although HP have been pretty greedy cutting costs acting like uncle scrooge and charging the same for (G)DDR3.

Intel chipset HM97. The 9 series chipset will be out on desktop in a few weeks from now, so basically way I see it should be in production right now with the notebooks at are going to be genuine new 2014 models, if that is the case.

M.2 slot for the newer SSD drives. I see little point moving backward to old standard, especially if HM97 has native support for this feature, again this could tie into cost and current inventory.

Hopes for the new 2014 models:

FHD screen that is IPS as like used in the 2012 model. Considering it is now 2014 this is not to much to ask, and one definitive reason why I sold my Envy 2013 model and kept my DV6 Envy 2012 model. If HP releases another terrible FHD screen as such in the 2013 model, then I will not be buying the 2014 model.

GDDR5 graphics memory on graphics options above 840M. As mentioned above this needs to come back, GDDR5 was a heavily promoted feature in 2011. We had this in 2011 and 2012, then moved backwards in 2013. I feel that no GDDR5 option in 2014 would be ridiculous.

Keyboard (backlit) that does not flex badly. Anyone that does not know what flex it, its when a key is pressed and several surrounding keys move down with it. Any key that is press is usually very results with not just the key being press but the entire underlying membrane moving down with it, which is unacceptable on a premium notebook, actually any on notebook.

Alloy construction. Not cheap alloy colour plastics on the lid. The more alloy the better, metal in most cases is more ridged. Last years 2013 Envy is easily twisted, not firm, and does not sit on all 4 base feet especially when the screen is opened.

AC wireless of at least 2x2. Please no more of these cheap 1x1 wireless cards that cannot connect any faster than 72Mbps, these are extremely slow at best, no means should even be called N standard.

Just to be better than any thing we have had before in all areas. Although after write what I have pointed out and what I hope for, somehow I can't see most of this happening.

I am guessing could be in the next few days (if very lucky), maybe even mid May, almost certainly in June during Comptex Taipei. Has anyone heard of any leaks for 2014 models, or are aware of looming announcement date?

The 2014 HP ENVY models will be available pretty soon from the looks of it. No confirmed information found yet about how the new lineup looks or what they will have, but I do know the naming scheme that will be used.

The ENVY 15 lineup will definitely be refreshed (if you look here), and will be named the ENVY 15- kXXX series (where X is a number, probably denoting Intel processor models) and ENVY 15- qXXX series (where X is a number, probably denoting AMD processor models). The ENVY 17 refresh will probably follow a very similar naming structure.

Hopefully more information will become available in the coming days. :)

lets hope the ENVY series becomes the original ENVY series with adequate mid-high-end hardware (especially the gpu; 850m is not high-end) again, and not envy branded ex-pavillions with adequate crappy hardware and support... or at least they make a top model with far better hardware than the others.
such hardware would be: high-end gpu (well-cooled, the cpu ex aequo), thunderbolt 2, 120hz display and/or IPS/radiance display, forcepad...

though i am pretty sure im getting back to the elitebooks/zbooks when the time for my ENVY 17 3D ends, which will be in q4/2014 at the latest. no more envy branded pavillion crapbooks and even crappier support, which now even wants to charge me for asking anything technical about my ENVY 17 3D since its warranty is over, for me.

The only reason I am still interested in HP, seem to get reasonable bang for buck, and the fact that walk in retail store (close to me) stock mainly HP, which allows me to view, and then at times buy at discounted rates.

I am wondering is the ENVY 15-kXXX series is related to the already released M6 models?

I very much doubt HP will make a return to their older Envy line (quality), the re-branding downwards has already been done for ~2 years now. That market may have long dried up, and might of not been profitable to be competitive. Hence not to drop the brand name, but to shift it to trick buyers that they are getting something more special for their money.

    Other hopes for wish list:

Trackpad, please oh please make this better. A large trackpad on the Envy 15-j (2013) does not make it better. The surface on the trackpad is terrible (just a piece of plastic), and had little if no glide between finger and trackpad. I know HP have used glass type trackpads on other models they produce (some business models, I believe the M6 might have it too), a glass type trackpad needs to go onto the Envy 15. Keep it large, add slip surface (like glass), and please add in dedicated click buttons, there is plenty of room for these on 15 inch notebooks.

Been looking around, and a Maxwell based GTX 850M will fit nicely with a modest boost in performance, even though it will more than likely use DDR3 for vRAM, but this is very feasible. I very much doubt that it would get the GTX 860M with GDDR5. In any case I wonder if HP will even bother with anything with "GTX" in the name and likely stick solely to 840M, but if they don't then I can see them marketing the "GTX" name during promotion, just because it sounds better.

Improve the hinge so that is tight, not all filmy and floppy like the 2013 model is. Can move it back further on the non-touch models at least. I can see why the touch models have little give in the hinge to be pushed back, as it will fall over backwards due to the added weight in the lid.

    Other thoughts for now:

Trawling the internet for any information, but cannot find a thing about any new models. I think it may have something to for with the lack of new hardware from Intel this year, even AMD have nothing at this stage not even a new A10 mobile based on steamroller. With Intel being usually the key motivator, there is just a speed bump processors refresh, which is nothing we don't see ever year usually within the first 6 months, really there has been nothing for 12 months.
Other than that, hoping for a new chipset in the form of what I could suspect would be named HM97, although I cannot see nothing from anyone else making, releasing, or announcing this chipset. With that in mind, then could be awhile before anything is out from HP, and it there is, may only be a new chassis, rather than new internal hardware.
At best might be just a CPU refresh and change to Nvidia 800 graphics, and in the AMD camp the R7 265M with DDR3. I doubt we will get R7 M265X as that has GDDR5, and HP will not want to give us that.

Please note: the ENVY 15-kXXX series is not related to the Pavilion m6-kXXX series. There are distinctions between the two series (in terms of both name and generation). Not to mention that each series is aimed at a different group of users (performance vs. casual users).

I do have a little more information about the graphics card that the ENVY 15 refresh will have; however, I think it will disappoint some of you here - it will be an NVIDIA GeForce 840M. At least, that's what the driver documentation strongly hints ( sp65231). The Softpaq's INF file does suggest though that HP may be using the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M in some of their notebook PCs, but I'm not sure if this will be an option for North American markets. This reflects what we've seen in the ENVY 15/17 J series.

In NZ all the pre-built models that are M6 are sold as Envy, although there are no longer any M6 of any kind on the market here at this stage. When I look at the 2012 models that are either DV6 or M6, both were sold as Envy, and the main difference I seen with these pre-built models was the thickness of the chassis, specs were typically the same.
Although I see what you are pointing out looking back at the link you have provided, as that is pointing directly to 15 inch model.

Yep no doubt the 840M will be in it, as we already have that as a new option. Really suspect the same as last year, 37W TDP processor with a 850M, with that in mind the quad core version with likely be a i7-4712MQ and 850M, if HP does not re-use the i7-4702MQ primarily.

Call me impatient, but cant wait to get hand on new models. I would definably suspect that they could be (very close to) in a local store in New Zealand right now. Seems HP ship out the pre-built models super early, some stock is even sitting out the back of some stores up to 4-7 weeks before they even are list or brought out to the floor. How do I know this, the retailers are getting in around ~5 units in with the shipping tag still on the box (showing the date sent and received), when I buy the unit for our remote regional locations in this spread out country.

I am wondering if HP are holding off till the end of year (or early 2015) for Broadwell, as the current Intel refresh is not inspiring (100MHz bump and same stepping) and does not need a chipset upgrade, therefore can continue to use the same platform.

    Nice find there.

Things I noticed about the video:

The panel is definitely an IPS screen (or similar technology), just watch the camera pan around it, especially from the bottom and the bottom angles. Display appears bright with rich looking colours, rather than washed out. Say in video it is FHD.

The Envy m6 looks like an identical re-hash of last years chassis, thin at the front and thick at the back. Vents, ports, back, access door, keyboard, silver plastic fat lid, and shape of everything is exactly the same as the Envy 15-j, with the only difference being the touchpad and the colour scheme.

There is some info on the sticker underneath, can only make a small tiny details out on it, not enough to warrant anything grand, but does has prototype on the sticker pretty large, which suggests this is still little awhile away from market. That said looks like it is fully baked and not much if nothing was missing, therefore production likely already started or just around the corner very shortly.

The keyboard does not appear to have stray keys, less hope the flex has been fixed, although is same chassis, then maybe not.

If you look to the left on the bench (start of video) is what look to be a black/red version of the Envy that are in the photo's link a couple of post above this.

So HP is going to to eventually be using a high end CPU to go along with the GTX 850M. I will wait for this version to be released and see reviews for it. Do you know of a release date for this version? I hope by August/September as I am in the market for a solid notebook for school. I'm fine with the GTX 850M as the GPU but I want an I7 quad core for my CPU.

HP ENVY 15-k000 and HP Pavilion 15-p000

After watching the video can confirm that accessing HDD, wireless card, and RAM is going to suck on the Envy model. There are NO user accessible bottom covers

RAM and wireless require the entire bottom chassis to be unscrewed. Worse still is the RAM is under the motherboard that is screwed down on top of bottom chassis, placement is somewhere near under the touchpad but under the motherboard.

Fortunately (strangely) the keyboard is accessed from the top without taking the motherboard out, but getting the keyboard out is not that easy. Let just hope that the keyboard fitting does not flex to much with this altered design, as the keyboard looks much the same design as the 15-j000, although is different.

Appears to me that flex will be reduced looking at the back plate of the keyboard on the 15-k, as it had less holes in it compared to last years 15-j model. I would think it be around the W keys and near the 4 key of the numeric keyboard near the Enter key.

I suspecting after looking at this photo for awhile, that there maybe bad flex around the WASD keys. Take a look at the support, there is a huge hole with a small circle ring in the centre, I am doubting it will be enough to restrain flex in this area with such a large cut out.

    Envy 15-k000.JPG

Wondering what it look like under the keyboard. Here is a video with full instructions and animated photos on how to get inside.

Removing and Replacing the Top Cover for HP ENVY 15-k000 and HP Pavilion 15-p000 Notebook PCs | HP® Support

    HP ENVY 15-q000

Envy 15-q000 models are thinly starting to appear. I am assuming these are the more powerful version or higher version of the 15-k000 models.

Going on the specs below, I can find an actual part number, but cannot find actual details on HP. Although looking at the part number a model starting with 15-q then this is likely the true quad core replacement for the main Envy 15 model with the greatest specs.

    ENVY 15-q005TX

Touch 15.6in FHD just maybe the IPS version as seen in the video, if not IPS then looks like a much better panel than last year from the viewing angles in the video.

4712HQ 3.3GHz this is certainly the BGA chip (not socketed) and does have VT-d enabled, plus falls into the 37W TDP.

    16GB will be DDR3L-1600 and likely 2x 8GB modules.

1.5TB hard drive, guessing will have the standard 8GB cache.

4GFX almost certain this will be the NVidia 850M (as processor is 37W TDP), would be sure anything lower than 4GB RAM will be 840M otherwise.

Wow, if HP makes a quad i7 with gtx850m and FHD 1080p, under $1000, then that will be an awesome, powerful, good looking and very economical. It would probably be the best all around notebook your could currently get. I'm going to wait and see

This is what I am certain with over the last few days, pretty much there are two different 15 inch Envy's for 2014

HP 15-p = model which will be aimed at the lower end, similar design as the k model, although likely lacking in features, basically the pavilion model.

Envy 15-k = model to fill gap where there is no optical drive previously, now there is, and more leaning towards ultra low voltage processors with discrete graphics, small battery capacity.

Envy 15-q = model which I don't know little about, but based on the specs is looking very similar to the 15-j model, which I suspect that will be using the same chassis from last year and more than likely the same chipset, with different touchpad made out of glass. Has no optical drive on this model.

I have personally have on pre-order (could be ~10 days away) the new 15-q model which is an HP Envy 15-q005TX, which is the only highest pre-built model that I can get. This is certainly re-fresh processor, either i7-4712MQ or i7-4712HQ, the actual details listed at the supplier has it with the MQ processor and not the HQ, which definitely has the 850M with 4GB DDR3, and FHD touch screen. No optical drive, and only 1x1 wireless.

I know there is a cheaper 15-q004TX in the works somewhere, not sure if FHD but might be, although does have a 850M, this model is cheaper, likely as it does not offer as much RAM and HDD space which usually pay way to much for anyway.

In any case these are way over priced where I am at, when converting to USD, the price is ridiculous even with a discount. And if I end up with last year model with a paint job and a different touch pad, then really just a GPU change, then I doubt that I will pick it up.

Update to he thread with some news, I have sourced the parts list and looked at the part number, pretty much 95% sure the 15-q model is rehashed 15-j

Many or most of the same 15-j parts are being reused in the new 15-q model, such as the entire lid assembly on the touch model which means it uses the same horrible panel, both in the HD and FHD model.

If you are holding out hope for resign, this is not going to be it. There will be some light cosmetic differences, like revised keyboard colour with blue backlight and the fake speaker grills along the back will be a bit longer

Confirmed hardware from parts list from the HP Envy 15-q005TX:

i7-4702HQ must be paired with 850M
Intel HM87 chipset motherboard (BGA mounted processor)
15-j based HD and FHD panel with touch screen
    Intel 3160 ac 1x1 wireless
Revised top cover, same design although
Silver colour keys keyboard with blue backlit

Other old carry over misc. parts from 15-j model or older
    keyboard back plate
    dummy weights (touch screen model)
AC power adaptor 4.5 including plug 120W
    Power button
    Battery 62Wh
    Service Covers
    Cooling Fan
    Subwoofer

The enclosure and the base have different part numbers (or newer). The enclosure will likely be the same as the 15-j, just the extended small pin hole design (speaker grill effect), and the base will need to bolt up to the enclosure slightly different, as the motherboard has changed revision although still is the same chipset. Few things come to mind, most likely the mount position of the BGA processor and the new touchpad that HP will use on the 15-q which is the same touchpad that is currently on the TouchSmart 13 (2013)

    Finally this:

Here is the parts page where everything you can spec on the CTO edition, which is what everyone in the US typically gets. Looks like a mix of 740M and 840M, bad news no 850M listed for US. Although there is a 740M PRO and 840M PRO motherboard listed, these may have full ROPS with 128bit memory bus as the is a 750M heat sink listed in the parts?

Anything that is labelled 720000 is pretty much from the 15-j, give it a little bit older or newer, basically all old stuff

Anything that is labelled 760000 is new parts for the 15-q

Great news for anyone buying the pre-built model.

    All models list so far (even the lower end spec models) feature the 850M and a i7-4702HQ processor, right through the 15-Q001TX ,02 ,03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, and finally 15-Q011TX

Which really make this a no brainer purchase for the GPU and also the CPU, both are excellent. On the GPU is new Maxwell, and the CPU is only 37W TPD which stays fairly cool when under load.

Not only is the lowest base pre-built model going to have the 850M and a low TDP quad, it is also has the same display panel ribbon cable which is a unified part. Which mean just replace the crap HD panel with a nice FHD panel of your choice e.g. FHD IPS.

    MOTHERBOARD DSC 850M 4GB i7-4702HQ HM87 STD

And now for some pictures of the HP Envy 15-Q001TX which confirm my suspicions all along:

If you are wondering is the display panel is going to be upgraded and changed internally, its not looking good.

With the data gathered from HP part numbers, and the video from the Discover HP event of the new HP m6 for 2014, which is pretty much identical to the 15-qxxx, I can see after pausing the video near the end, on the prototype sticker the have part details listed, the panel used is 15.6 FHD flat SVA CMI
What does this mean you might ask, it means HP are using Chimei panel that was used in last years 15-j, which has really poor at viewing angles and contrast, not only that suffers from vertical banding which looks teribble.

If I am correct with this, then expect the same Chimei panel in the touch version from this review I created last year.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...rt-15-j000-amd-a10-5750m-richland-review.html

I am becoming less inspired at this stage for the 15-qxxx. Really only new good things to look forwards to is the new touchpad, new 850M graphics, VT-d feature in the processor if actually is HQ model (this particular feature has little value to 99% of people in this segment of the market).

The 15-kxxx models are somewhat interesting, although ultra low voltage dual core processors don't really do it for me in most of the models.
There is a quad version although no discrete graphics with these due to TDP, heatsink capibilty, and battery size.
Plus is the 15-k seem to more of a different model, rather than a clone the 15-q is turning out to be.

I literally hate the way Hp envy K-XXXX series looks like, really ugly and most importantly they have included ULV CPUs.
I can't believe at such high price they're offering ULV cpus :(((.
Also I noticed they discontinued the older envy 15 quad edition laptops.
I can't really understand HP's tactics right now...

    same here.

im still on my 1st gen envy 17 3D, and not a single hp notebook would be suitable as its successor atm.. id love to get an envy 17-3200 if they were available, more than any newer model bay far. these are envy branded pavillion crapbooks, nothing else.
im thinking about getting back to the workstations, especially zbook 17, if the drivers can be modified to act as geforce/radeon drivers with the quadro/firepro gpus, since there is no 17" elitebook anymore (870 with adequate gpu would be great, ie. better gpu than the 850 has).
performance (REAL high-end cpus & gpus), quality, support, durability, thunderbolt, forcepad... everything the complete HP consumer line lacks of totally.

ill wait for the next elitebook/zbook refresh, and if there is no acceptable configuration for me, i'm away from HP after more than 10 years of trust.

Looking to buy the new 15t 2014 model here in the u.s . But seems u can only pair a dual core with the nvidia 850m. Otherwise with the quad core , u can't configure with discrete graphics, only integrated. Comes down to $800 . But wanna wait till July 4 when the sales kick in. Also stuck between this and the Lenovo y510 with Intel 4700 and nvidia 755 graphics. Costs $80 more. Which would u think is better. I don't game much now but wanna leave that option open :)

Personally I loved the way envy 15 looked but after their ULV refresh I hate it.
I'm personally throwing my money on Asus n550jk for sake of better design and performance.

They still have it, its the Envy 15 slim touch aka, ENVY 15t-Q100. Identical to last years except, for larger touchpad. Based on drivers, It looks like it will get the quad-core i7 4712HQ, and GTX850M, my guess sometime in July.

The touchpad on the 15-q model is sure to make a huge difference to the product, the touchpad on the 15-j is boarder line unusable.
The new touch pad is already used on an Envy 13 TouchSmart. If you have had a chance to try it out e.g. in a store on a display shelve, it has the same free smooth finger slide similar to MacBook.

The 850M GPU simply is going to be fast, just because it is Maxwell and so new. Yeah maybe not high-end but surely should not disappoint.

Problem I have is the deal breaker here is going to be he terrible re-used Chimei panel that looks set to be in the touch model, which will be the only model I can get early.

btw. I still have the 15-q featuring i7-4712HQ with 850M on order, ETA is 1st July. I am still debating with myself if I will pick it up or not, even though I have picked this up with 25% discount, the brick and mortar retailer have way over priced the retail price, thus the discount does not shine, therefore would be cheaper to buy the unit from most online shops.

I can wait till beginning July. I'll research this other option. I don't use the touch pad or touch screen unless it completely flips around like the Lenovo yoga. I also noticed that the intel 4700 was the main culprit in my toshiba x70 (got stolen, long story don't ask) when temps used to spike up in the 90's C during gaming . Graphics chip used to stay in the 70's whereas the processor would in the 90's. So thought maybe a dual core would be better due to thermal issues in a laptop

    The i7-4712HQ is a 37W processor vs the i7-4700MQ which is 47W

From past experience with the i7-4702MQ which is a 37W processor, it ran pretty cool often 10-20c cooler when gaming than the i7-4700MQ in the same platform.
Although there is an overhead with the more powerful GPU inside that closes the thermal gap.
In general the 37W processor version did not ramp the fan to high, and if it did it would take a long time before it would do so.

I have and envy touchsmart 15 with the chimei screen, and it's not that bad. Yes the viewing angles aren't the best, but it's not unbearable. I actually like it. Yes ips panel would be better. Another note, we don't even know for sure which panel they will use.

The i7-4700MQ throttles less than the 4702HQ simply due to a higher TDP, especially if OCed (assuming that the cooling assembly can handle the additional thermal load).

I found the cooling system in last years 15-j using the i7-4702MQ with 750M to be reasonable for a HP machine at least.

This years 15-q used the same fan part number, we know this much that will move same amount of air. The i7-4712HQ is 37W when paired with 850M which is the only processor allowed with the combo of the two, therefore with this taken into account the 850M maybe a little less hungry on the power usage, hopefully run slightly cooler.

The 15-q heatsink has a new part number therefore is different. If I was to make an assumption then should have the same cooling capability, only the outlay to fit the position of CPU and GPU changed, with dimention to fit BGA mounted processor.

Well, I personally can't understand their tactics about such a long refresh delay.
It's over 2 weeks since they have released their useless models with ULV and Envy 15t slim with just core i5 with overpriced tag.
It's already June and after few months Intel's new broadwell will come, I can't understand what they are waiting for to release their refresh models with core i7 and nvidia 850m with reasonable price.
Also they discountinued all of previous envy 15 touchsmart laptops even those with nvidia 840m for no apparent reason than being acting like greedy so that peoples only buy their ULV refresh if they want powerful graphics.
This whole tactics is out of mind.
Personally I preferred only HP in laptops simply because of what their build quality has been in past years, But from Haswell refresh, They have went way down in their quality and even can't stand against other competitors at high price.
The problem is simple, They are giving same components to ALL of the buyers; Those who buys laptop with cheaper configuration and Those who buys with highest configuration will get same basic hardware. The biggest example is cheapest TN LED display for all configurations and a flexing keyboard.

The refresh looks pretty much industry standard across the board in with many manufactures this year, some others have a few new models in there catalogue. The chipset is not changing and the processor is just a very small clock bump, there is no need to change an existing product drastically but just to refresh that too. In order to stay inline with the refresh, timing must stay inline as well to fit into the like of Computex and Discover HP, otherwise what are they going to show off.

There are plenty of people always in the market for products, thus they can still sell to the majority of buyers that either don't know any better or simply just don't care. After all they still get a new product that no one has used and is plenty fast.

Personally from the searching I have done, there will be no mobile quad core Broadwell this year, that will be here at earliest 2015 first quarter some stage. With that it is actually sometime away yet, there is still over 6 months till the year is over, then a wait till market from there. Broadwell will no doubt be better, but much the same like Haswell in its core architecture. The wait for a new product such as Skylake is very far away from today.

Discounting from where I can see it is called by HP as "End of Financial Year Sale", they are offering 25% in my particular zone of the planet. What more is HP need to clear old inventory to make way for the refreshed models, otherwise no one will buy their old stock, then HP will not be able to move/sell it. Hence where some of the wait will comes into it.

Personally I have been disgusted with the build quality with the units I have received, although that said, it may have been bad luck that I received many a problem unit one after the other. Overall in my case I go for HP as they are readily available in retail stores from where I am at, thus a easily obtainable on any given day. Performance is pretty good for the dollars spent in most cases, plus retail stores that are bricks and mortar tend to shift bulk stock, therefore often have specials that out strip online retailers.

Parts are generally staying the same, unfortunately that means the same old problem parts in the refresh. Although the 850M is looking such good shape even if it is DDR3, the updated 850M GPU alone is a very attractive option as that is genuine new architecture, this give it some merit. Changing the touchpad the a glass coated design will fix a major flaw in the original design. To bad about the display panel however, the touch sensor (digitiser) actually works pretty nice.

I think there will maybe be a major design change at Broadwell release, then a carry over of chassis and associated parts to Skylake. If not then, then certainly a design change at Skylake.

pfff looks like the HP Envy 15-qXXX has already been out for some time now, in the form of the HP Envy m6. It was said not to confused these two models, but with the data I now have so far, they are exactly the same!

HP ENVY TouchSmart M6-n012dx 15.6" Laptop Review 2014 - YouTube

The only difference I can see between the reviewed model on you tube and the 15-q is the m6 is running dual core processor, chipset no doubt is HM87, no discrete graphics, and appears to have the same inverting at the slightest back tilt Chimei panel. The updated m6 in the other video on notebook check which HP run a video on and gave then a hand on, has the exact same quad core processor and 850M the 15-q will be using. There really is no difference, this is just a bunch of rebranding of the same product, shame on HP!

One other thing, the newer m6 and 15-q models have two less speakers than the 15-j. These two speakers have been removed from the bottom front.

And another thing, if you look at the chassis, there is now no finger print reader, a removal of a feature. I personally never used mine much, but HP will not pass any savings on to you.

My order came in for the 15-q today, am can confirm it is pretty much a darn disappointment. It is exactly the same as last years 15-j model externally with some features removed.

I was going to take the 15-q, but the fat bald headed right guy next to the sale person who was actually severing me said, I couldn't see it turned on, quote "if we turn it on, then windows will be activated". He persisted, then I said I am not buying it.

Anyhow, the keyboard flex is just as bad as 15-j (if you say yours doesn't have it, your just kidding yourself and not noticing it, I have seen this on at least 20 different 15-j models over the past year, these all have some varying flex on the left hand side, simply there is no support under the keyboard by design nature). The only change is the keyboard is now painted silver. Also this is the third machine I have seen up really close inspection that has a random keyboard key sticking up in the air

2 speakers have been removed from the bottom front. No longer has 4 speakers like the 15-j

There is now no finger print reader at all. The 15-j has a finger print read as standard

Original sale guy (who was reasonable ok but inexperienced) finally got the machine running just before the other fat bald guy came back after leaving for a short time, but by then only made it into the BIOS. I could see the screen washed out badly when tiled back, certainly TN panel which I suspect is likely a Chimei panel.

The processor listed on the side of the box does have i7-4712HQ

The touchpad is made of a glass surface which is certainly an improvement, but unfortunately cause "it couldn't be turned on, as it will activate windows", I had no way to test it.

Couldn't verify the GPU, as above "it couldn't be turned on, as it will activate windows"

Bottom line is, if you are in the market for a 15-j and want it now, then do go for the 15-q just to get the much better touchpad surface mainly, or the 850M if you can get it. Otherwise if your are looking for something actually new, it is not it.

One last thing, don't buy from a retail shop that have any staff that treat you with poor customer service just before you hand you money over.

    These are very bad news!
HP is making a very bad business. I'm dissapointed.

Obviously there is in that particular diagram, although the finger print reader is not present on the pre-built model, where a lot of people worldwide buy these. However certain countries have a CTO online ordering system may have the option to choose this feature. Finger printer reader has always been a standard feature in pre-built for many years in my country, which is a disappointment to see it gone.

I don't think I am being picky about the keyboard. If you accept a notebook with any keys on the keyboard (spending many hundreds of dollars) either sticky or actually sticking up in the air (not flush) then you are an idiot.
In any case, I personally had my hand on the 15-q, where you have not yet. The keyboard on the left hand side had a lot of flex on the unit I checked. The pressure in which the keyboard was mount to the base unit appear as it was pushing up the keyboard unit ~1mm or so, thus was raised in that area.

at $755 for a full HD + GTX 850M isn't too bad but not sure about build quality that I'm reading in this thread right now...

EDIT: found another JULY100 for $100 off.. not sure what the requirement/threshold is.

Problem I have with the 15-k model 850M in this configuration is the processor is a dual core. Which means it will be limited with newer games performance.

In my country HP are way overpricing RRP of the 15-q model which is in US dollars $2367

I was offered it with a 25% discount during a promotion, but even then the price in US dollars $1775 which is a freaking rip off for the poor quality keyboard and bad TN screen.

$1775 does not include a SSD cache or neither a Intel 7260ac, it comes with no cache and just a 1x1 wireless adapter.

    $1775 is not a discount.

    Is there a big difference between the 840m vs 850m . It's a $70 difference . I don't think the 2gig vs 4 gig VRAM will matter too much
