    ENVY 17 3D windows xp downgrade need graphics driver for ati 5850

    Hi everyone. been working on building a dual boot of win xp and win 7 on my new envy 17 3d. have all the drivers working except for the graphics driver for the ati mobility radeon 5850, cant find on hp support site obviously but nothing on ati either. ive heard about custom drivers but cant find anything? any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Don't think a 5850m will work on xp, surely such drivers dont exist for such an old OS.

    Just curious, why do you want to dual boot with xp?

    Run windows xp mode using virtual pc. just need to upgrade to windows 7 professional to get it free from microsoft.

    would games still work in the virtual pc route? i thought i tried that a few years ago and it didnt

    That's where I was going, too, with my question :) He could also use Virtual Box or VMware Player. Those are free as well and run on Home edition.

    They will not work. VBox, VMware, and VPC all do not fully support Direct3D. VBox does offer a way enable Direct3D/ graphics acceleration but it's very buggy and only works in certain games.

    So are you telling me there is probably no way to play my old xp games under win 7 using virtualization?

    Might still be worth trying. I guess it depends on what game(s) he's trying to run.

    Where did you download the other XP Drivers for the ENVY 17? I am in the same boat and need to install XP on it. Would appreciate help.
