I just purchased an ENVY 15 3xxx with 6GB of memory, hoping to upgrade to 8. I see many people reporting buying 2x4GB modules to replace what's shipped, but that seems wasteful when they're already sending you one 4GB module. If possible, I'd like to save $20 and only get one module, pairing it up with what's already being shipped to me.
Do you know if it's possible to get any brand of memory, so long as the specs match HP's memory (4GB 1333Mhz DDR3 PC3-10600, Cas 9, Cycle time 1.5, Voltage 1.5)? Or would I need to purchase the brand that's shipped with the computer? If so, can anybody report what that is?

Yes, as long as the spec's match, it will be fine.
(You can also sell that 2GB module on eBay to increase your savings. Just price it to sell quickly.)
Also note that your brand of memory that was installed could be different than what another may have since memory being a commodity is fungible. So HP can and does use memory from various sources throughout a production run. -
You should try to buy the brand that shipped with the computer for the fastest dual channel speeds. If not from the same company they should have the same timings and capacities for maximum performance. There is no harm in mixing different rams though, although there may be a drop in performance because the rams are not identical.
