Hi,i am a chinese owner and i just received my ENVY15, as well as the red&orange problem. because the ENVY15 was not on the market in china, so i can not return it(ps: i am in china right now and won't go to US anymore). And on HPchina website, there is not any issue relating to ENVY15.But,thank god i can read a little english. i heard that HP is gonna release a softeware or something to fix the IPS, i am wandering if that is released? If it is released or someone fixed the issue, please inform me cause i may not know it.Thank you a lot first.

PS:i am a dental student and you can not imagine how terrible it would be when i am watching the gingival pictures on my ENVY15.

AND one more question, about the fan, i just played 10mins world of warcraft, it sounded loudly, is it related to the HP coolsense software? can i fix it?how?

There will not be a software fix for the envy display - it is a hardware issue.
If color is important to your studies i would return it or sell it and buy another laptop.

The fan can get loud when playing any game - try checking the coolsense options and making sure the laptop is on a hard surface when playing.

You are incorrect sir. Yes, it is a hardware issue. No, HP will probably not issue any type of recall, as they feel the display is in "normal operation".

Yes, however, HP will be releasing color tuning software to "supposedly" help the issue. HP acknowledges complaints about the HP Envy 15's color calibration, will release a tuning utility in the 'coming weeks' -- Engadget

However, I'll believe it when I see it. ;)

Again, it will not be a fix. This is just a PR placebo from HP to try and save face.

To the OP: Switching out the display is possible but very risky, i would advisr against it.

Even when not playing games, I found the fan to be so loudthat I needed to return the laptop (it also had cosmetic issues). Notebookcheck.net has a long review of the Envy 15 and they state "Past Envy notebooks had loud fans and the dual fans in the Envy 15 continue this trend." They discuss fan noise in more detail but I found the noise far too loud for my liking.Review link:

A laptop cooler will help to keep it cool, although the fan in the cooler will likely be almost as loud as the internal fan. The Zalman NC-1000 laptop cooler works perfectly for my older generation Envy 15.

There are not very many thin and light laptops with graphics cards that can handle 1080p gaming and a metal chassis, so the louder fan is sort of a compromise to keep the hardware from overheating.

i ordered envy 15 before they released the review.sadly.now it seems envy 15 sucks.

if the released software can not solve it as you said, i would probably give it a try and post the result.
i can hardly imagine that how they dare to sell a laptop which can't reproduce red! where is their engineer?

yes you are right. how naive i am to want a laptop which can hadle 1080p gaming and be thin.

To be fair, that notebookcheck review was largely positive. Aside from the screen's red issue, nothing was too concerning.

For the red issue, try using these settings to lessen the issue. It's not a complete fix, but it does help.

This color problem is indeed fixed with the Utility HP released on 4/23/12
(sp56745.exe), at least for me. I was very skeptical as I was sure that it was a hardware problem and that replacing the IPS display would be the only thing that could fix this, but this utility does fix the problem. Reds are now red etc…. My Hp Envy 15 3040nr ips screen is now accurately displaying colors correctly.
This is NOT a calibration tool but a multimedia update. PROBLEM IS SOLVED!!!

Interesting... can anybody else confirm this? A link and testimonial on a thread necro from a guy with one post screams dubious, even if it's totally true. This might be actively discussed in the owner's lounge already, but is there any confirmation that the My Display Utility really improves the color reproduction of the Envy 15's IPS screen?

Yeah. Can someone please confirm this? I just bough a HP Envy 15 for photography. I wish I saw the reviews on the color gamut. I received it yesterday and tried color calibration myself. In my opinion the HP Envy is worst than just a Orange/Red problem. It is lacking in EVERY primary and secondary. Green-Yellow looks the same as Green. Its ing bull.

I went online and downloaded "My Display Utility" or "sp56745.exe" which is supposed to fix the problem like lougt said. However the link is broken. I called HP today and spoke with an ENVY specialist. After speaking with his manager I was told that HP techs pulled sp56745.exe off the website in order to do some updates. (Also raises questions.) They said that it should be ready by Tuesday. However the rep was hesitant to make promises. So I do not trust his information. I have a call back scheduled for Tuesday June 5th 2012.

Good read. HP should refund every owner who opted for the better screen option back their $200. That's that only way to fix this and make people happy about being lied to and scammed - but they won't.

Just like any other big corporation, they don't care about customers (even employees), they just care about stock holders. And I doubt one model out of everything HP sells will make a difference at all. Companies don't do the right thing anymore, unless it's going to affect them long term.

I am afraid you're right. I have not gotten a call back as they promised. Just like my dating life.

However, the patch they promised is out. I will check it out in a few hours and post results.

Yeah. HP on a canoe trip with a turn paddle. The patch is very UN-scientific. It is a NOOB patch with few option and no real color calibration. There is a 3 menu option that lets me change from "warm, neutral cool". Baby tuning.

I think the question is, whether or not the settings are childishly simple, do any of those settings fix it?

Not sure what mensongg downloaded. The fix I downloaded that resolved the color issue had no adjustments available and there are no settings that I can adjust. I downloaded the My Display utility, sp56745, released on 4.23.12 and ran it. Then I was prompted to reboot my computer. After rebooting the problem was resolved for me. I have looked into the issue and every single computer scientist that I know and I spoke with from MIT said that this problem can be resolved with a patch and hardware is most likely not the issue. The real issue is poor quality control from HP. Try the utiility! Good Luck.
