for the wife for school mainly. going to get it from TigerDirect refurb for $549 w/ 12month warranty.

i am going to put more memory in it.

I just cant get myself to buy a new entry level laptop cause I dont think they are that great.

I was told on anther forum the EVO 610 was built better than the new entry level lappies even though its old.

    opinions??

oh yeah I forgt to mention, my budget is about $500

you can get a brand new machine for around that price if you look around for sales. I wouldnt get a used one, its not worth it.

Like what as in "NEW" machine? I dont want to get a new machine just based only on price if it is not as well built or has less features than an older refurb.

I dont know if these new ones I can get from HP are less of a laptop but same price.

I know the 610 is older but it is a refurb, has decent cpu and can be had with 1yr warranty.

if you know of a better deal let me know. I am not trying to spend a grand just to get a little newer machine.

I dont know anything about laptops

Most laptops nowadays are made from plastic. Might want to look at a used ThinkPad, like a T22 or T23. The Evos were part of Compaqs business class notebooks which were pretty good. I heard the battery life on the PIII Evos was better than the P4 versions if battery life is an issue. If you throw in a a faster hard drive and a little more memory, performance will be quite good. Good Luck.

bought one today off EBay that had 512MB mem & cd-rw/dvd rom drive. Also has 1 yr factory warranty remaining. Was cheaper than the one from Tiger & it had upgrades.

    paid $550.

    thanks
