I am looking for fairly easy, yet safe, ways to speed up my zv5430. (besides changing the power scheme to "home" or "always on"). Any suggestions?

You've already dealt with the #1 speed complaint (the hard drive), so hardware-wise that leaves upgrading to 1GB RAM as the next obvious step. "Unused" memory gets used to buffer disk I/O, which helps quite a bit. Feel free to go beyond 1GB of course, but 1GB is the current sweet spot.

Besides that... look for programs in Task Manager that are sapping CPU cycles. Norton Antivirus is notorious for being a pig.

Otherwise, you already have a seriously nice machine.
