To summarize the question:
How can I get HP to replace my LCD? I really am rather tired of the support hassles!
A few months ago, I accidentally dropped my EliteBook 8530w (and since I knew it was bound to happen eventually, I did buy it with ADP). After I got the thing back (after waiting on the replacement LCD screen to come in stock, I've noticed some odd issues related to the screen:
- The screen seems to have some permanent "smudges" on the screen -- dark areas, that I can't clean off.
- The EDID seems to be messed up -- it misidentifies the panel name, size, and available non-native modes.
The old LCD identified itself properly as an LP154WU1-TLC2. It offered 1920x1200, 1440x900, 1280x800, and such resolutions.
The new one instead identifies itself as "MS_", claims to be 22 inches, and offers an incorrect 1280x720 instead of the correct 1280x800.- Both Windows (PowerStrip) and Linux (Xorg) claim no EDID EEPROM is present.
- Additionally, HP Performance Tuning Framework announces this:
Unrecognized graphics card
Unable to find this graphics card (ID 127) in the Framework database.
From the HP Win7 ATI drivers under here (sp44933): http://isvpatch.external.hp.com/HPPTF2/drvlib/
My card should be: "ATI Mobility FireGL V5700" = ati2mtag_M76, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9591&SUBSYS_3604103C
My card really is: "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650" = ati2mtag_M76, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9591&SUBSYS_30E7103C
My question: how can I get HP to replace the LCD? Ideally, I'd like them to just cross-ship a new LCD panel, for me to replace the thing myself.
I'm tired of having to send the thing in -- it's been in several times, and each time they managed to not fix everything. For example, after the drop, I got it back with a nonworking switch cover -- it took a second servicing for them to replace it, along with the fingerprint reader that had been broken even before the drop.
Oh, and even then, the reader didn't work quite right... it seemed to not be properly attached to the underside of the palmrest area. I had to momentarily wedge a bit of paper between it and the USB/Audio board, and then it stayed attached once I removed the paper.
(Honestly, I'm kicking myself for not getting on-site service.... and the lookup tool at www.hp.com/go/lookuptool is broken, so I can't even upgrade the service plan. Just try looking up KW950AV.)

Another thing: I've also noticed that the "Graphics by ATI (FireGL)" logo has disappeared as well; this is likely also caused by the incorrect video card identification.
So, to summarize the question:
How can I get HP to replace the LCD? I really am rather tired of the support hassles. -
But seriously, it sounds like they have changed the graphics card, and/or the mobo and not tattooed the mobo correcty. You normally get a worksheet which details what work was done and what parts they replaced.
Also, onsite isn't really that much different. You still have to go through the offshore support nightmare, and then they just send the guy out with whatever parts they deem need replacing. I would prefer a walk-in service really, that way they have all the tools/parts they need, and you can check it over before you accept it back.
I feel for you, the support turkeys you end up talking too are really annoying, and you get a bit bored explaining the whole situation for the 10th time to yet another turkey. I've been there, I even almost lost it at one point, it is really trying. I had an odd situation though where my laptop had a design fault and couldn't be used how it was specified, so the only outcome was for them to give me a new model laptop. It took about 15 calls over a 2 month period to finally get the result, and a new 8710w to replace the dodgy nw9440. -
That reminds me... a while ago they did replace the motherboard when I accidentally discovered this issue the hard way: http://alerts.hp.com/r?2.1.3KT.2ZR.13pQ6Q.DQaXuC..H.ISmc.1xi4.bW89MQ__DCScFQW0 -- it seems they probably replaced the motherboard so they could have the original on hand for analysis.
Unfortunately, they also forgot to "tattoo" it properly... I got it back with that changed DMI information, and they forgot to enable AMT -- I had to send it in AGAIN to get that fixed, at the same time as the switch cover and the fingerprint reader.
Unfortunately, despite it calling itself an 8530w, it still claims to have a Radeon, not a FireGL. Here's a diff from the old DMI information to the new, once I got it back with AMT re-enabled: http://users.csc.calpoly.edu/~dgoyette/dmidecode-diff.log
Oh, and apparently now it's an "HP EliteBook 8530w ", with a trailing space. -
Yeah, you cant re-enable AMT, it is a one shot process. That would have been another new mobo in that case.
-
Oddly enough, when I got it back without AMT, it was with the older BIOS... and when I updated it, it claimed to be in an "uncommited state". But then I managed to break it by doing a BIOS update at the same time as I tried enabling embedded security, so I had to send it back again anyway.
So, do I just have to deal with calling HP yet again? Ideally, I'd really like to upgrade my warranty, since this laptop is my primary system. I'll have to wait until December-ish before I can afford any downtime. -
This reminds me I had the exact same problem on an old nw8000 after a mobo replacement under warranty. That was a pain because there is actually no different part number for the nc8000 (Radeon) vs the nw8000 (FireGL) mobo. It IS the same part, the ONLY difference is the tattoo applied, and trying to get HP to find that out took many calls and a lot of work on my part too. -
-
Then you also need to use the save/restore method to apply the tattoo. This is probably where your repair went wrong. I have found that the only way to get the FireGL (or Quadro) logo on boot is to save a properly configured dataset first - in your case that would have been the faulty mobo before replacement, then flash it back in. If you just go through HPSETCFG normally, it won't give you the logo, and in the case of the ATi card, it won't unlock the FireGL features, even when you configure it identically to how it was!!!
I can help out with what you need, as long as I don't have to provide a PC101 course as well (you just need to create a bootable USB thumb drive or FDD and know how to type a DOS command). If so pm me your p/n and s/n and email addy, and I can send you what you need. Otherwise you can tell HP about what they need to do above to fix this for you. -
sorry but it seems that i do not have enough permission for pm...if it's not going to be a trouble for you you can send me a message at kateliew(at)gmail.com so we could start a normal converstion..ok?
-
I found 1.38 and tried to edit the saved data, but just changing 30e7 to 3604 in the .SAV files didn't work -- it gave a mismatch.
Similarly, HPIB103 (or is it HPBI103?) reported ERROR upon trying to write the "id" field.
I do wish I could meet the people who designed the laptop... it's awesome, aside from the DMI stuff, and a broken UEFI implementation (a topic for a different day). -
It is weird because there must be something hidden in the sav files, because if you don't start with a good sav and just do it manually, you can't ever get the FGL/Quadro logo back at boot. Even when the sav file set appears to be identical!
Anyway I have provided kateliev with what I would consider a good sav file set matching his machine, so we should wait until we hear back if my theory is correct. -
Hmm, now that I look at a bug report I posted back when I had the original motherboard, I had this:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21258958/8530w-ati-lspci-nnvv.log
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3650 [1002:9591]
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:3604]
The 3604 is what makes the Windows INFs recognize it as FireGL. It seems it's just the video card's ID that changes, not the whole motherboard, perhaps.
Also:
http://users.csc.calpoly.edu/~dgoyette/dmidecode-diff.log -- diff from original to replaced-motherboard.
EDIT: I wonder if those extra pieces of DMI data that have changed, are "burnflags"....
One time I fiddled with burnflags, and accidentally got the thing to say "This is a pre-release product, not for sale."
EDIT again:
http://users.csc.calpoly.edu/~dgoyette/dmidecode-diff-newer.log
If you look at the Model Name string, it seems like there's a difference in trailing whitespace. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. -
Also, the .SAV files had the "hidden" property set; perhaps it doesn't like having them non-hidden.
I've uploaded the file here:
http://users.csc.calpoly.edu/~dgoyette/8530w_sav.zip
Note that I've replaced my serial number with 0xff bytes (ASCII _ÿ_ character) in the files. I used xvi32 to edit them, though that hex editor doesn't like saving to 'hidden' files. -
Ok just to finish off here...
It turns out my tattoo theory was correct, the tattoo is the key to getting back your FireGL GPU after a mobo swap. It doesn't seem to affect the Quadro, since that is an actual GPU hardware difference, but on the Radeon you need to tell it to become a FireGL. In both cases if you aren't tattoo'd correctly, you won't get the FireGL or Quadro logo in the bottom left corner of the (HP logo boot) screen. Fortunately you can fix it yourself as follows...
You need to use the .sav files from a good tattoo (which I fortunately had the foresight to store away before I got a new system board), then you just change the serial number and part number using your favourite editor in the appropriate .sav files, then restore them to your new board using HPSetCfg.
HPSetCfg v1.38 can be found here:
[link removed (it is an HP confidential file)] - It can be found online if you look hard enough.
The good .sav file set to use as a base can be found here:

Thanks to those who were able to test this out and confirm the fix, that makes it 3 out of 3 so far. -
Another thing I just realized they screwed up upon servicing my laptop:

Note the text "Mobile Workstation" on the left palmrest area.. mine is missing that text now. It also has a worn-out edge on the front of the palm-rest -- you can see through one layer down to another layer of different metal.
Granted, that's not a big deal. It's only cosmetic -- but it does show that the service technicians were really not paying attention when fixing the thing. Oh, and the trailing space must be an hpsetcfg bug. -
A genious solution, that magicalli fixed my problem. Thank you stumo.
......
I found it cuite peculiar and funy on the same side, that hp is putting much effort in making this or other tool confidential, and not caring at all about fixing delicate problems like these. If you ask an hp technician, or looking trough their support forums, problem like the missing firegl or the misterious "system not in committed state" are becoming cuite "catch 22" to solve.....
Thank you again ! -
And send it back and get them to put the correct top cover on (and not a damaged/used one either). The correct part number is 502336-001 (that one will say "mobile workstation" like it is supposed to), what they have put on is either a 502335-001 or 495068-001 from a 8530p, and a damaged one at that!!!
Go on, name and shame! -
Basically it is the Intel AMT feature, that must be set on or off and permanently locked (committed). New boards from the factory arrive uncommiteted, so that the tech can match what was there previously when they swap out the mobo, that cpqamt tool is what they are supposed to use. If you don't do it you get that annoying message at every boot.
