I need a notebook for outside in the sun use. Between 14"-16" that has a very BRIGHT screen. I've tried the Envy 15 w/Matte and it's too dim. Would you recommend the new EliteBook 8540w or 8440w? Do these have really bright screens that are good for outside use? I need good battery life too.

    Thx

Look at the Fujitsus. They generally have the best sunlight readable screens.

Not cheap though. Anytime you absolutely need to take a machine out of an office/home environment and have it perform in the 'open air', things get expensive real quick.

I don't really think brightness is what you are looking for. Rather, you want a matte screen with anti-glare treatment, ABSOLUTELY not a glossy one.

But I tried the Envy 15 w/anti-glare and it looks so dim. Should it be facing the Sun or away from it?

Do the EliteBook have high nitt? Cause they are anti-glare too but I think more brightness is needed.

Any screen can get washed out on a bright enough day, or if you're in the direct sun light. That's why it's not so much about brightness of the laptop as it is reducing the sun's rays that have the biggest effect on maintaining a viewable screen. Therefore, the first step in correcting that is a passive one: find a shaded area, or providing the shade yourself.

Your next step would be to purchase an anti-glare film. As a third and last resort, you may need to choose a laptop that comes with a matte bright screen. But don't expect miracles as the aforementioned still would apply

Matte screens tend to cut down brightness. Glossy screens with an anti-glare/reflection coating is better for outdoors since it allows more backlight through while minimizing glare/reflection. The brighter the screen is, the higher the power consumption.

A very important consideration, but only if you intend to use it away from a power outlet.
