Decisions, decisions, does anyone comment on those items ?
btw, is this(8440p, WH257UT) real ? since the price is somewhat a lot lower than other sites.

I had this issue myself, deciding between the two that is.
I eventually settled on the 8440 series, I prefer the port layout and wasn't thrilled about the premium I had to pay on the 8540 to get a 1080p screen.
No point getting a 15.6" screen if it would be 900p is what I thought to myself. I also figured the 8440 would be easier to move around with during travel and the sort.
I recently got a Desktop so the laptop is intended to be an on the go machine for me, in this case the 8440 just suited my needs much better. -
Looking at the workstation lineups, I just don't find the Thinkpads W510 (and the sometime to appear W701) so appealing, though they're excellent machines and may be the best value. The HP 8440w is very tempting for a relatively portable high-power core i7 workstation --- the only hestitation is whether it has a strong enough gpu. But for a strong gpu next choice might be the 8740w (the M6500 and W701 are just too bulky for my tastes). Or settle for a compromise 15.6" -- but there, even though I like the Elitebooks a lot, the Dell M4500 might be better, depending on pricing anyway.
It's pretty frustrating that these new models are taking so long to come out... -
I decided on the 8440p. I originally had an order in for the W510, but delays changed my mind. And I'm happy, I'd rather have the 14". It will be portable. And it'll have a good screen res. (hasn't arrived, should in the next couple days).
Won't be a gaming machine, but it'll hold its own with the dedicated graphics. -
im waiting until the complete elitebook lineup is released, as well as all hardware options (especially the firepro 5800 @ 8540w). then ill probably replace my still present 8510p with a 8540w i7-620 cpu with the firepro 5800 and use it as a radeon by modifying the drivers, since the 8540p is a huge fail, just because of the nvs 5100 gpu.
i insist on the build quality, business support and overall quality based on my past experience with several hp business notebooks, so although i wont be using the notebook the way its meant to be used (as a wotkstation), but mainly as an entertainment/gaming notebook and for office/study use, i prefer the elitebooks over the envy (mainly because of its right-side only ports, hence in the wrong place while using an eg. usb mouse, additional keys on the left, hence exremely annoying while gaming using w,s,a,d,tab, shift, ctrl and the missing i7-620 cpu and simply because it belongs to hp's consumer line, not business, which is a huge disadvantage). -

Neither for me. I'm waiting on the 8740w. I've had the money ready to go since last decade.
-
But right now I'm about to go for 8440p (only one available in Europe) or 8440w if I can get a good deal from the US...
The price on that eBay listing is very good, and the seller seems to have a strong rep (100%).
Now the shipping prices will make the difference.
Also from 8440P to 8440w the difference are

I have an 8510w that has been great for me. I will likely get the 8540w, but I will assess the 8540P as I really don't need any of the technical certifications of the GPU. But DDR5 memory sounds like fun.
-
Thanks for you guys comments,
btw, does anyone have an idea on why 8440w is coming out so delayed?
One more my dilemma is that I have only preference for 8440 is 1600x900 display. but if I choose 1600x900, there are only configured models or most expensive pre-configured model.
Comparing to Thinkpad, hp really discourages to go a configured model (sucks!) -

I just bought a 8540p, preconfigured. It arrives tomorrow so we will see how it is.
I opted for the 15" as i do a fair bit of document writing and SQL scripting. the 14" screen is just to small at 1600x900. the 15.6 just seems better. I checked out one in a store recently (Glossy consumer model) and decided it was enough.
It was between this and a M4400 or M4500 (When they come out) i figure, the USB3.0, extra ports faster processor and ddr 3 the 8540p was the better option.
i just hope the 1600x900 is ok, still unsure of this resolution.
I do not need a workstation type GPU card. -
Hi Williard,
Please let us know if your 8540p arrives tomorrow. It would be great news!!! Even more I would say you would be the first one!!!
Good luck! -
Well, I'm agree with SecretAsianMan and Thecla: waiting for the very-long-awaited 8740w... I saw a rumour on Engadget which claimed that EliteBook 8740w will be released tomorrow. I don't know if this is a joke, but the real truth is the 8740w will be released THIS MONTH (no kidding and it's confirmed).
I'm a web designer and software engineer, I like the style of the old (and the new) EliteBooks. In fact, I've ordered an 8730w fully customized with DreamColor screen but I cancelled when I saw the new core i7 processors. I hope the wait is well worth... -
Ohhh, I'm looking more and more onto that ebay listing for a 8440p at $1199.
I'm in Norway now so I could get it delivered and pay VAT (no duty as pc are duty free in Norway) and It'll be $1,717.
The same model in Norway is listed at 15 366 nok = $2,639.
I lose on the keyboard layout (no big deal as long as I can change the typing language) and the "superbe" Norwegian Customer protection (up to 5 years warranty by law, on top of manufactuer warranty).
The question now, is the following: This comes with a 3 year general warranty.
Can i get a HP dealer in Norway to service my laptop if needed, even though it's bought from the US? -
-
Thanks for the answer, that's good to know. Now I just need to figure out if I should buy a localized keyboard or a set of transparent stickers...
Also waiting for some actual users' feedback.. -
Just ordered my 8440w FN093UT model, the one with Core i7 620M, 1600x900 screen and Quadro FX380M. Supposedly, it should arrive at my supplier March 23rd... hopefully will get it in my hands by the end of next week
Allegedly, some Core i7 shortage is to blame...
Anyways, came down to around $1870 CAD shipped, not bad. Considering, i was considering the Sony Z which would've cost me upwards of $2000+. -
Here, most of us sites say, most of fn093ut are out of stock. -
around 10 ordered from HP directly and so i guess it is from their "inventory" but it's also ordered then ship. Once they receive their inventory, they'll immediately ship it to me.
Not sure how the relationship between HP and their Authorized Resellers work... -
Does anyone know what the differences are btw 8440p model, WH257UT and WH257UT #ABA ?

@Thecla:
Well, I said that because I saw it on an Engadget's comment. I also told that this was only a rumour, not a statement. The statement was the 8740w will be released this month, I don't know the specific day though. It's also rumoured (read, only 'rumoured') that some 8740w's have been already sold to large business companies (my guess is DreamWorks at least).
If you want to stay tuned, suscribe to this RSS feed. -
Just to clarify, the 3 year warranty is standard for the business models only (definitely elitebooks, probably probooks etc. I haven't checked). Consumer models have a different warranty.
-
Hopefully the "this month" prediction is more-or-less accurate though --- I've been holding off upgrading my workstation and waiting for the 8740w refresh of the 8730w since the mobile core i7's were announced and it seems like it's been forever...
-
http://h20386.www2.hp.com/CanadaStore/SubCategories.aspx?pid=C213517
but in your case, it seems that since the first one doesn't have the localization letters, it's just reference to the general model number... while the second one is referring to the specific English localization model of the 8440p. -
@Thecla:
Ok, I didn't get the pictureI did almost the same as you: I cancelled an already ordered 8730w for the same reason: the release of core i7 processors. For me (and I think for the majority of us) is a better investment to buy a notebook with the latest processor if you plan to use for a long time (5-6 years), specially if you are going to spend a lot of money (these machines are very expensive when CTO).
My main and only concern with the EliteBooks is the SSD shipped with them. Since I want a dual config with 160G SSD + 500G HDD, I'm afraid the SSD is G1, without TRIM support. I hope HP refresh their SSD's (Intel and Samsung) or at least they update their BIOSes (to support TRIM). If you install a SSD of your own, the warranty will be voided (it's sad but true). -
I was watching an item in ebay, and winning bid price was so low, and only differences are "NO" #ABA.
here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180481582656&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNA:US:1123
Is this price possible ??? -
The 3d scores are the same in the nvs 5100 and fx 880m. so im thinking well whats in the nvs 5100 what makes it under par against the 880m cos the performance/power is the same. -
it is a fail.
if you need a workstation gpu, you have plenty of good ones with the 8540w. but for the 8540p they should have sticked with the same strategy they followed with its predecessors - (mid-)high-end ati radeons, which perform better on business applications than such nvs gpus made specifically for these, but far better on other applications, not to mention games (yes, i do gaming on a hp business notebook, and its the best mobile gaming experience ever!). ..and right now even more because of dx11 hardware. -
I'd also like to get an SSD, though I'm not too particular which kind. But the expense of the CTO HP models is an issue. They don't offer SSD's on a preconfigured 8440/8540w so it seems unlikely they will on the 8740w either, and I can see it getting very expensive. -
-
@Thecla & SecretAsianMan:
Read THIS.
Yes, expect a very very expensive top configuration for the 8740w (much more than a top-notch Dell Precision M6500!), since it's likely this setup will be only available when customized. For example, if you want a backlit keyboard (new on EliteBooks!!
) you'll have to customize it, because it's not a standard feature.
BTW, my max budget is 5000 euro (nearly $7000). I hope it will be enough -
-
For what its worth its more powerful than my 770m.
The only Thing that i can agree with u on for a "fail" is that theres no direct x11. But thats nvidia for you cos non of there new line doesnt support it.
So really even if you have the 880m or 1800m (which u dont seem to consider as a fail) instead of the 5100m. from what your saying it thats a fail aswell cos it doesnt support dx11 ether. so we should all wait for the mobility M5800. -
I wish all options would be here right now! but not so far, and we have to be patient... Also is worth to wait for a user/pro review first before spending a lot of money, although I bet it will be mainly positive
-
What exactly is so good about DC2 (as opposed to DC1, which is the same panel as the Dell M6400)? I wonder if the Dell M6500 will use the same panel as the HP 8740w then.
-
@sgogeta4: Because it's rumoured that DreamColor 2 screens will be 10-bit IPS panels, not 8-bit TN panels like DC1 or the M6500's. Therefore, DC2 screeens on EliteBook laptops will match DreamColor desktop screens, like the amazing (and very expensive) HP LP2480zx monitor (with true 30-bit color output and accurate emulation of several color spaces). On a LP2480zx the sRGB space emulation is almost *perfect*: since this is a wide-gamut color monitor, this means no more oversaturated colors when on sRGB mode (a very common issue on the majority of wide-gamut monitors). The M6500 RGB LED panel suffers this issue, for example.
-
Can anyone comment further as to the gaming abilities of the 8540p/w? I have an old nc8430 so I know hp can make a great gaming-capable business laptop, but I would like to know how would these workstation cards hold, say, in Bioshock 2, or GTA 4, or any other game I'd probably like to play in the upcoming few years.
-
you might want to check this http://hpfansite.com/hp-elitebook/hps-undercover-gaming-laptop-elitebook-8540w/ and this http://hpfansite.com/hp-elitebook/hp-elitebook-8440w-review/ and this http://hpfansite.com/hp-elitebook/hp-night-light-illuminates-elitebook-8440p-playing-left4dead-2/ for the 8440p.
Also in order of comparison, there's a video of the T410 with integrated graphic playing Modern Warfare 2 and I was really impressed.
As this machine is in many ways similar to the Elitebook, I' would expect to run games as good and even better with dedicated graphics.
Here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_uKBTcPMXA -
simply put a radeon 5750/5770 (GDDR5) or a 5830 like with the envy 15 into the 8540p, and its perfect, along with the 8540w with its great workstation gpus. but now the 8540p ist just a less expensive, weaker little brother of the 8540w, but targeted actually at the same user group, no more distinction between workstation and professional (=consumer) models like before (eg. 8530p/w - radeon 3650 and quadro fx2770 or firegl 5700). -
SecretAsianMan Notebook Consultant
The wait has been inconvenient, but on the other hand, I've accrued more revenue in that time. My budget now should allow for a top spec model. -
Yea the p version usually use the conusmer variant and using the NVS i cant see why they chose nvidia in their p model or that Ati never had anything for them.
Lol the Ati ards u mentioned are ambitous cos thats actually more power that the quadros and so far Hp have actually justified the higher price tag in the W models based on this. But those atis would be nice. but if there was it be likely to be 5650 although i would be suprised if they did that they skipped the 4 series all together.
Lol trust me i have he w models cos they have better gpu but if they did have 57xx + or 5830. i sure wud go for th p model cos i sont even use cad.
Im just waitng on the m5800 and see how that stacks aswell as the 1800m.
i dont think ill get a new notebook this yr unless i sell this one (in sig) but if i can afford one it prob be in the model after the 8540s or maybe a sager np8690 prob with a GTX 360/380m by then. cos im getting gpu power hungry the more i get new notebook with exception to the notebook been 15inches and has a sleek business look about it -
thats right. i simply dont see a reason why HP shouldnt offer more gpus for the 85#0p as well. sure, continuing the previous strategy, a 5650 would be the logical ati candidate, but according to several reviews and my personal experience with the 8510p (and also the envy 15), theres no reason not to put a real high-end gpu into the 15'' elitebook. moreover 32nm radeon 5000s are less power-hungry and heat-producing than nvidia gpus based on the gtx 200 series.
so imo. a 5750/5770 (because of GDDR5) or a 5830 should be a must for the 8540p, at least as a higher option beside a 5650 (and that nvs 5100 that actually should be inside the -w).
and regarding nvidia - lets see when the mobile fermi gpus will come (gtx 400m - dx11), the desktop ones will come on march 26. but it all looks like the whole delay with fermi was due to the fact that nvidia wasnt able to match the performance of the 5870 when initially intended to release fermi (480), and now tried to make it at least a bit stronger. so i think fermi 470 will be a bit better than 5850 (but more expensive!) and fermi 480 a bit better than 5870 (but also more expensive), and the dual gpu 5970 will keep holding the crown (lets see how the coming 5890 single gpu will perform), since a dual fermi probably wont be suitable for <1000w desktops. -
While DX11 is a nice feature to have, it's not really important to any business related programs, hence why it's not really being pushed in business solutions.
As for the desktop components, the GTX 480 is priced below the HD 5970 (dual GPU card) but above the HD 5870, while the GTX 470 is priced below the HD 5870 (though it should perform about the same as the HD 5870) but above the HD 5850. Since the HD 5890 will just be an overclocked HD 5870, the GTX 480 should still remain the fastest single GPU card. -
thanks antsiou! too bad the price difference between the preconfigured and customized is so big. arrgh, decisions decisions....
-
I would actually be delighted if they offered 5750/5770 or 5830 in a business notebook. especially if i thought it was just going to be a 4670 or 5650 initially. i wouldnt have a need to have the workstation notebook.
Its funny that the mobile market is like a year behind the desktop counterpart. lol u got the GTX 480 and the 3M series are just about here for notebooks.
But i thought the best solo card was the 5970? im sure sli would just be impeccable but i cant see how someone would need that much power in two cards when one card is significant. i means doe anybody care about detail and fps in crysis or is it an ego thing to see how good there card is.
I wonder what rig they had when they made it. cos how can u have a game that requires so much power but there was no gpu for consumers to run it on maXimum? -
Are there any pictures of the 8440 / 8540 with a UK keyboard around?
I'm keen to find out if the UK layouts have the half-sized Enter key I've spotted in many of the photos (including the 6440b/6540b as well)
Thanks,
Chris. -
well, the 300 series are just a small "update" of the 200 (mainly for dx10.1), and the 400 are the real new series. but as you can see with ati, the mobile gpus come just a few months after the new series has been released (radeon 5000 end sept. 09, mobiles in dec.).
the 5970 is a single card, but inside there are 2 gpus, like the gtx295. however, there will be an overclocked 5870, probably 5890, which will be a single gpu.
and regarding necessary power - there are people playing on 2048p resolutionsas well as eyefinity (multiple monitors) with a gaming gpu.
-
We can only hope the 4xxM series will actually be the new architecture...
"Elitebook 8440p/w or 8540p/w" Which one are you going for?
