My 8460p fan began to run full blast at startup and shutdown. I use HPfancontrol and it has been working fine until a few weeks ago. The fan would go to high speed even when the temp was at 43. Removed it and cleaned some of the dust from it and the vent. No change. The smart data on the HD shows 14043 hours so this laptop has some hours on it. After I installed the fan after the cleaning, it worked fine again. Then the next day, it was on high again. Re installed the HPfancontrol s/w but no change. I began to think that maybe there was something wrong with the fan sensor, so I ordered a new fan for $10. It is the Delta brand. After installing the new fan, everything has been operating fine again. This fan has four wires. Two for the 5v power, one for the tach and one for the pwm control.

Maybe this will help others with fan control problems.
