DreamColor 2 is only full HD? What a shame. I'm glad I didn't wait for the 8740w. I'd take my 16:10 over the extra power.

yeah, without WUXGA it would be less interesting... how does HP want to compete with DELL's M6500 with WUXGA?

I'm curious to see where the M7820 falls in relation to its consumer part. It seems it's the entry level, below the FX 2800M, so it should performance below the M7740 (4860 derivative) but above the M5800 (which is above the FX 1800M).

I just saw these three models listed at one finnish online retailer.

    WD936EA#AK8 HP 8740W I5-520M/17"/4G/320G/ATI/7P64 22.03.2010 2135.00

    WD940EA#AK8 HP 8740W I7-620M/17"/4G/FX2800/HSPA/7P64 22.03.2010 2963.00

    WD941EA#AK8 HP 8740W I7-720QM/17"/8/500G/FX2800/7P64 22.03.2010 3048.00

Product code, quick specs, estimated availability and price in euros. Product links in that site were still empty, no data was entered yet.

there is the possibility that instead of

    V5725 / FX2700 / FX3700

    for the 8730w

    there will be

    M5800 / FX2800 / M7820

    for the 8740w

so, two ATI one NVIDIA instead of one ATI and two NVIDIA

    we will see...

I've been waiting for a while --- I was thinking to wait till May/June after it had been out for a while, but now it looks like that would make me an early adopter. ;) Plus, 8740w + ATI Firepro M7820 + dreamcolor + SSD (hopefully) is starting to sound very expensive...

The 8740w should be 16:10 even with DreamColor --- it's only the smaller models like the 8540w that went to 16:9.

Man. I have high hopes for this machine, and I'm ready to drop some cash for it.

Watching the forums, hpfansite.com, and hp.com pretty closely now.

I don't think the high end model or even the others will be available soon... yeah, introduced this month but maybe you even have to wait until September to get one

September? Yow, that's a bit of a stretch. That said, I'd wait that long for a truly great machine. By then, we might even have a 32nm shrink of the Clarksfield chips.

Nope, the line up has already been revealed to be: M7820 / FX 2800M / FX 3800M according to the 8740w PDF datasheet with the M7820 being the entry level GPU. The M5800 will be only in the 8540w.

    I sure hope M7820 beats FX3800M

According to that comment, it's exactly what I want: an 8540w with a 17" or larger WUXGA panel

The 8540w is their 15.6" Elitebook, the 8740w is their 17" one.

I've found a useful site to compare graphic cards:

    http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/index.php

However, M7820 is a new-comer and it hasn't been tested yet. I check this site daily to get a reading as soon as the first results are posted.

8740w is up on the USA site.

    http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF25a/321957-321957-64295-3740645-3955549-4138087.html

Preconfigured models only for now, it seems. At the time of this posting, the only quad-core combinations are the i7-720QM with the 3800M GPU. There are two such configs, priced at $3K and $3.9K USD. From a quick glance at the specs, both configs look identical except for the 6300 wireless card. Not sure what the real difference is; perhaps the extra $900 is for the DreamColor 2 display?

The M7820 GPU is offered only with the i5-540M currently. :(

Who comes up with these combinations? I'm ready to lay down some cash here, but my ideal combination (920XM, DC2, ATI) is not available yet.

You're just right! This is what I am waiting also. I hope they will soon provide user customizable configurations.

Finally some competition for Dell's M6500...and some lowering pricing, perhaps.
