Just because many people have the same question:

"I'm seeking the right laptop for - daughter, a Jr. in High School - who likes 14" dv1000 size & 12-cell battery life & brightview How is it (1.5 Ghz Centrino) for - hot under the palm? - vibration under the palm? - general schoolwork & web surfing? - ok to read 1280x768 in 14.0" w/ brightscreen? In advance, thanks"

The DV1000 is an excellent all purpose laptop for someone who won't be playing games. Even for simple to moderate photoediting and DVD tasks this PC will do the job. Multitasking is a breeze with 512 MB RAM. I recommend getting the 5400 drive to boost performance. Battery life is excellent. It is warm but not hot under "the palm". For Office applications and web surfing this computer will more than handle the tast. WXGA is fine for reading.

There are three DVD player programs loaded and the intervideo doesn't look as sharp on the DV1000.

The external case is not as durable as the Compaq V2000. You may want to look into that one (personal preference), which has the same finish on the outside as the DV1000 has on the inside.

The advantage of the DV1000 is its PCMCIA sized remote control if she were to do presentations or present home movies at home.

    WIFI performance is excellent.

    Ah, Games ..
    Well, some games: yes.
    "WinBrick", a bouncing-balls & disappearing--blocks
    game ... not a 3-D war game.
Today games are played on an athlon running at 9.9 MHz with a 32MB Nvidia video card.
So .. I hope this amounts to light enough graphics load that it'll work. ( but maybe this is wishful thinking )

And - thanks v. much for concise & relevant reply.
One reviewer (on CNET?) actually owned both the Compaq & dv1000.
He returned the dv1000 for 2 problems, one a buzzing noise
and exchanged it for the compaq but said he actually preferred
the HP because, on 4 or 5 or 6 points, dv1000 was better.
