HP Envy 15 review (early 2012) -- Engadget
overall a pretty positive review I thought. The color saturation issues could probably be fixed with a color profile tweak and the battery life is an issue.
A lot of references to it looking like a MBP which is to be expected. Personally I am happy with my 2nd gen Envy 17 and don't see a very compelling reason to upgrade.

I don't know if I'll buy an Envy again. I loved my 2nd Gen Envy 15. It was short lived due to poor quality control.
Given how powerful MBP now these days and ability to run Windows fairly stable, I might strongly consider that.
One thing for sure, I'll rather buy another Envy than Alienware. Damn thing is heavy and thick. For PC in terms of price + features + size/weight, the Envy takes the cake! -

Agree. Hope the refresh this summer would include that.

If MBP's were designed in such a way that they could handle decent gaming I'd definitely consider getting one.....
Then I'd either do 1 of 2 things.
1) Put Windows on it thru bootcamp and use it as the main OS
OR
2) Use Windows just for gaming and use/learn Mac OSX as my main OS
Don't get me wrong I love Windows 7 but I've always been interested in learning Lion and you can say whatever you want about Apple and its policies they do know how to make a damn good trackpad on their laptops...plus they are king when it comes to touch interfaces...
Anyways we'll see what happens this summer with the new Envy line. -
HP Never Again ! So ready to get rid of current gen 2 envy 15

yeah macbook is the perfect machine for me but it lacks a good res screen for 2012, decent gaming graphics, and dual hard drives. also its about 50% overpriced. I don't think apple can keep this up much longer without a serious refresh. The envy is a great step in the right direction for windows all in one laptops but comes up short I think, if only because of the unoriginal design and lack of quality control. Im sure it might be ok if not really good, but I am not willing to take that chance.

The graphics on the mbp are actually as good as the envy 15, but the price is way too high for what you get.
As for whether apple can keep up their higher prices and sales for mbp, yes, yes they can.
Even you would take a mbp over an envy 15 because of the perceptions of lower build quality issues. We know for a FACT that a flawless envy 15 has superior cooling and a higher res screen option than a flawless mbp, but these details are less than the perceptions of superiority that apple products have. In some areas, they are superior, but none of that matters in the end, the perception out there is that apple computers are the best you can get, and most people follow what others think and don't dive into the details to see whether it really is the best they can get or what they wish to do.
apple notebooks are the beats headphones of the high end laptop buyers world, especially for alot of kids going off to college using their parents/federal/state money to buy higher end notebooks.
That was apparently some journalism class where macs were required, but the trends are real, the adoption rates for laptops people aspire to have (and can have with graduation gift money), is the mbp.
There will always be people like me who specifally seek out something better for my money, I did not go for beats headphones for my home setup, got some beyer dymanics for a similar price and better sound quality, but again, most people are not like that, they see what others covet, and there they follow. That is the strength of apples mindshare in all that they do. -

a friend of mine was forced to get one for some sort of marketing/design course and I found it ridiculous -
1) Use Bootcamp to boot into Windows
2) Use Parallel or VMWare and run windows as a terminal windows. I've tried playing WOW on a friend MBP this way and it runs pretty smoothly.
Over priced, I can somewhat agree. But then again, I spend almost 2k for my 2nd Gen HP Envy 15h with SSD setup.
HP Envy is a great laptop on features and price. Quality sucks. I know people who owns MBP for over 6 - 8 years and that thing still runs well. The average PC laptop dies after 3-4 years. Sucks! -
I'd never keep a laptop for more than 2 years, regardless of the make or how good the build quality was.
-
And keeping a laptop for 2 years only? To each his own but there's no way in you know what that I'm gonna keep my next laptop for less than 5 years.... -
I was thinking of laptop more of long haul, so try to get the best one as possible since it is not upgradable aside from HDD and RAM. -
