We have two contradicting sources of information when it comes to the graphic cards, HP press release states one thing and HP rep on youtube states another..

Envy 15-1200 might not come out as sources say that Envy 14 and Envy 17 are going to be the new Envy lineup, replacing the 13 and the 15. However, I do hope the 15 can live a bit longer.

There was never an explicit statement that the Envy 15 would be discontinued, only that the Envy 13 was to be replaced by the Envy 14. I am still hopeful that the Envy 15 will become a switchable graphics platform.

I trust the reps in the various videos far more than the HP press release statements. Those are almost always rushed and not very well reviewed. The press release states that both the 14 & 17 contain the Radeon 5830, when neither do, as per the presentations that you can find on Slashgear and other websites.

Anyway, if you can find something to contradict anything that i've written, ill take a look at it.

Isn't the 17 inch quad core? And why would the 14 inch not offer Blu-Ray?

Great list- very helpful one33! I'm curious about the reports I've heard that the Envy 17 will support 3D video. Would this be a result of using this specific GPU? Or would the display likely be specialized to support this?

I can confirm that the 2nd gen Envy 15 supports SDHC format cards and I have been told by a supervisor at HP Tech Support that the card reader can read and write to SDXC cards as well.

Both I think, but don't quote me on that. There are numerous pathways to construct a 3D enabled device.

Thanks for the informative post, one33_bpm.

Can you actually confirm how many external displays the Envy 14 and 17 can drive using Eyefinity technology?

    Thanks, L3vi.

With the maximum number of external displays (2/3) used with the Envy 14/7, is the notebook's own screen still available as an independent display?

Does the Envy 14 or 17 support Intel's WiDi technology? Thanks.

    The E15 Gen2 Core i7-Quad actually has 2 USB 3.0 ports and 1 combo eSata/USB 2.0 port (slight correction).

My guess is that the E14 is going to replace the E13 since it is not selling well with the E15 remaining and the E17 being added so they would have a full lineup.

the presentations show a base model for the Envy 14. Not too much is said about the Envy 17. Official specs haven't been released, so don't make your "specs" so certain.

Yeah, i hear ya. Most of the websites initially just forwarded the specs in the initial press release, so that is why you still see 5830 in some of the places. Slashgear is one of those sites, but if you watch the video demo (also on slashgear) of the Envy 14 & 17, the HP rep contradicts this...

What i am trying to do here is compile the details that are confirmed by HP Envy PMs (not CSRs as they are usually wrong) or reputable websites. At this point, the only reputable websites (IMO) that have posted any specs on the Envy 14 & 15 are Anandtech & CNet. Anyway, everything else that i have is based upon these sources, and logical deduction. For instance, you can't have 4x 1333MHz DDR3 DIMMs in an Arrandale based machine b/c the Arrandale memory controller only supports 2x 1066MHz DIMMs, only the Clarksfield memory controller does.

Anyway, i recognize that the information we have been given can change at any moment. All i can do is try to keep the information up-to-date as I learn it. If you wish to help me do that, it will be appreciated.

EDIT: Regarding new information, if anybody has anything to add, please try to provide a link to a reputable website (eg. Anandtech) or some sort of citation that will allow me to check, or your reasoning if you have logically deduced something. If i dont update the information at first, it may be because there are conflicting claims from other more reliable sources, or I am awaiting additional confirmation.

Have anyone noticed that the same place were the HP reps (yes that is more than one) have given their previews are the same? And as such HP have done a poor job in providing info to those 2 people so that they don't contradict themselves?

And as such Anandtech is a reputable site for sure, but we do have to realize that most of what is in the interwebs is spread in terms of eco chamber.

Now NO HP representative said that we would have a core i3, again none, only one said that we would have a 5650, and no one knew about the storage capabilities of those machines, some of these sites filled the void with a some far fetched idea of what could be in insides of the machines, they don't represent any leaked officials and don't clearly have anything to add. The launch was a closed monitored release ( badly monitored might I add), but it was closed, there is simply no way that they have so much contradicting information, this is just expected speculation that would arise in such a major revamp of the lines in a major brand.

Clearly and I'm not trying to diminish any efforts here is that we are dealing with a game of hearsay:

We can't trust any of the info provided by these HP reps, since they were not briefed and they clearly demonstrated a lack of knowledge.

Contradiction of sources from those HP reps (between then) and the HP press release ( a more believable thing, since those are more controlled in what info they provide and are based on what the engineers pass up)

We have along this the need for money from those interested in the release of those infos, we might that they have scavenged around the interwebs to fills those gaps and by doing so created the i3 and the 5650 along the SSDs

Yes Anand and Cnet are usually reliable, but they do make mistakes, and those are not far from common, edited posts are a daily business for those two, and as well all the tech blogs.

I know that there a only a few that are money grabbers reviewers and some of those do it in the light of a good deed, but just because it is done in that light don't mean that the info provided is any less wrong.

So $1000 with an i5-430/5650/4gb/320gb hdd

    That's great. Figure $1000 more for the screen...that's $1,100

If that holds true, that would be crazy, man.

This list of ports conflicts slightly with the diagrams showing the layout of the ports on page 12, as the USB 3.0 port was omitted from the list but clearly shown on page 12.

On the left side of the laptop there is one eSATA/USB 2.0 port and one "SuperSpeed USB" port compatible with USB 3.0. On the right side of the laptop there are two USB 2.0 ports.

The Keyboard has integrated calc keypad on the right and they got rid of the annoying special function keys on the left of the Envy 15.

The product manual for the 3rd Gen Envy 15 (Envy 1200) seems to show not much change from 2nd Gen., other than the i7-840QM and the possibility of using the ATI HD 5730(?). No mention anywhere of backlit keyboard or switchable graphics, and it appears the extremely annoying special function keys on the left side of the keyboard will remain. Unless perhaps HP intends to leapfrog over the 1200 with a 1300 series release.

Or that they are really phasing out the 15 in favor of the 14. Also note that the 15 i7 Motherboards has USB 3.0 Support, while the 17 and 14 don't have USB 3.0 Support Options.

IMO, service manuals can change if the product hasn't been released yet. Tho, they do have far more weight to them than fanboi XYZ saying something.

The 17 clearly has a USB 3.0 port in the diagram on page 12, however it is not included in the list of ports.

Although I'm wondering if LightPeak is truly arriving next year as anticipated, perhaps investing so much in buying a laptop today with USB 3.0 technology is akin to buying a BetaMax VCR.

Fo sho, hopefully there won't be too long of a wait.

Also for the Envy14, the 7 hrs I am guessing is with the integrated GPU. What do you think the battery life would be with the ATI GPU???
    Just curious.

i do hope that they update the 15 with switchable graphics and updated design and build quality. the e2e glass display, maybe radiance, backlit keyboard and omitting the shortcut keys would be nice... but secondary.
im just trying to decide whether its worth waiting to see if they ever do this between now and the release of the 14 or i should just spring on one now... any views???

The refreshed Envy 15 according to an HP rep is going to be released a couple months after the release of the Envy 14 and 17. So if you can't wait, spring away :D
