Since there have been a number of complaints about the way Dell has implemented the free Xbox 360 deal for students, I decided to contact HP for some clarification on how they would implement it.
HP will start the deal on the 14th. Almost all of their Configure to Order laptops are included, as well as a decent selection of Quick Ship models. The HP Envy 14/17 is included for both.
I tried to get clarification if the Sandy Bridge laptops on the 15th would be included and her response was "Those that I have stated above are the only notebooks qualified for this promotion." Since the Envy 14 is listed as one of the customizable laptops, I'm going to assume that on the 15th it will include a free Xbox 360.
There is a coupon for $50 off (NBEV83296). Not sure how long that one will be offered. But between student discount, coupon code, and free 360, students (and teachers?) look to be getting an excellent deal lately.

is there a way of getting this deal and not being an actual student? because i just received my hp envy last week and i wouldnt mind sending it back if it means getting a free xbox 360.

The other exception might be if you're no longer a student but still have access to a .edu address. Or maybe you know a student.
Why did you buy an Envy last week anyway, when the Sandy Bridge update comes out June 15th? -

I am talking to a rep, A coupon would be given starting the 26th and it includes any computer that is over 699, I assume it goes by base price and not buy configuring a laptop thats 499 to 699. But I could be wrong.

I finished school a few years ago but still have a .edu address unfortunately my password has expired for my account. I went to the dell site for this deal and you have to put in ur .edu address to even get into the deal. Bestbuy.com looks a bit easier though but I'm not sure they will have the envys. I wonder what checks bestbuy would do to verify that you are still currently a student or if just showing any school ID would be ok?

There are Envy 17's at Best Buy right now. I would assume once the SB Envy 14 comes out that they'll carry them.
If you forgot your password, why don't you just use the password recovery feature for your email? -
"I think you might be able to get one if you're a teacher. The reason I say that is because most online places seem to just need a .edu email address.

i Actually ordered my Envy beats like 3 weeks ago. they took a while in making my custom configuration. and then just last week i was reading the forums that the new refreshed ones are coming out.,
Will there be a big difference in with the refresh? all ive read is that its getting a usb 3.0 a better track pad and 2nd gen sandy bridge. i mean will there be a big difference between the one i just got and the new ones coming out?
i got a Envy 14 Beats edition with a core i7
also will the beats edition get the same refresh or whats gonna happen to them because i like the matte black color better. im new to the forums so any info would be great -

The Sandy Bridge processor represents a huge improvement over the previous Nehalem processors. Couple that with a graphics card upgrade (minor) and a clickpad upgrade (not sure how good that will be) and USB 3.0 (useful) and potentially other things (possibly larger base HDD/RAM etc) then it should be a big improvement. You might want to hold your current Envy 14 as long as you can. Once more details are known about the refresh, you can make the decision to return yours.
Plus, if you have access to HP Academy (you need a .edu email) then you can get a nice discount + Xbox 360. -
Thanks alot for the info and the advice. i have 21 days to return it so my final day i think its on june 3rd. ill keep and eye out in this forums for more info on the refresh.
-
On the dell site they send you an email specifically to your .edu email address so maybe its an authentication email or something and I'm assuming that HP will do the same type of thing. Of course there could be a way around this in just asking someone who still has a working .edu email account to help out. That of course is assuming they don't try to match up the names or something. -
I got lucky that my old .edu email address was still up and running for me. i registered a the HP academy and it instantly shows big discounts on all kinds of things. i must say its a good discount too. ill just wait till the refreshed envys are back up on june to use it and get me a free xbox.
i also went on the microsoft website and you can punch in your .edu email their and they will send you a promo code that way you can get the free xbox if you buy a laptop. my .edu email worked and i got my promo code waiting to be used. -
The interesting thing is that you can get the exact same discount through the EPP program...which is available through most major employers and the ubiquitous CorporatePerks website.
I would make sure that with the xbox promo you are actually getting a discount. Many customers are claiming retailers are "raising" prices in order to qualify for the promo. I can't verify this, but I'd make sure you are able to consider all of the promotions available for the product you are interested in assuming the xbox deal is worth $199 in savings (but less than that because an xbox is not quite as liquid as $199 less on your credit card).
Check websites like techbargains, dealigg, fatwallet, etc. and discount retailers like newegg.com. -
Has anyone actually gone thru this process? Either online or by phone?
How exactly do they verify this stuff? And where do you put in your ".edu" address? Like if I'm ordering it from hp.com do I just use my school email address for contact info even though I rarely check it?
Would it just be better to call them over the phone and find out? I'm not sure if I'm supposed to buy the laptop and then contact MS with my student info or what...this is a great offer but the process isn't too clear.... -
To qualify he said the following criteria must be met:
- Must be attending college/university or has been accepted to college/university.
To Prove you must:
- College students with university email on approved list or has a .edu email address.
- High School graduate must verify by providing either with university ID or acceptance letter
I'm guessing you'd have to scan the ID or acceptance letter and send it to your call rep to get this.
This works with the APP discount. Frankly, seems like a lot more hoops than you get with what other retailers are doing and you could well find a better deal through regular HP.com using the % off coupons. -
I'm looking at buying an Envy 14, because of their 25% off coupon that brings the price down to ~$800. I'd lose that discount if I wanted the Xbox 360 then, right? Does the APP discount stack with normal coupons, or is the Xbox deal an exception?
-
Hmmn I just want to know if they'll allow me to use a 25% OFF coupon when purchasing the laptop AND still get the free 360 Slim. That's all I care about. The HP Academy discount from what I've seen really doesn't do much.
Thanks tho for the initial clearup. At least now I know I'll def have to call and speak with someone. -

i just called HP and to ask about the free xbox deal, i wanted to know if i qualified by using my .edu he said yea, so then i told him i would wait off till the envy gets the refresh before i order my laptop and xbox. He then told me that it was a limited time offer and that when the envy gets a refresh they probably wont have anymore free xbox. was he just trying to scare me and into buying something right now or will they actually run out of the xbox supply by june 15th? the whole free microsoft xbox offer runs until like september? right???? would hp run out that fast?
-

It's possible they might run out by then, but I doubt it. It's less than a month, and since the deal probably ends in September I would bet they have enough for all of July.
-
thats what i thought...im pretty sure they will still have some. eh if not, sandy bridge is still worth waiting for
-
Good until 5/31. -
For Dell, their xbox promotion ends on July 1. I checked yesterday.
HP might be similar. -

Again, HP has said that the xbox deal is a NON-STACKABLE COUPON!!! That means that any other coupons will be negated. So you can only use one.
Steeler was only showing the 25% coupon in case if anyone wanted to buy one now.
