    Install 7zip, and then just right click ==> extract.

    Because you didn't put your files in "C:\swsetup\SP49571", this step is vital.

    What're the benefits to upgrading to .06. is there a battery life increase?

    I still cant update. I followed directions. Extracted WinFlash and replaced the bin in the SP folder. Still says no bin found. Seems everything is correct

    Open the InsydeFlash and go to the settings and manually select the bin file.

    Yeah, I also took the initiative to manually select the proper .bin file, but it still gives me the error message about a missing .rom

    so i don't have HP_TOOLS, SwSetup or a recovery partition (deleted them all and did a clean install) and i had no problems updating the BIOS to 12 from 5.

    i basically followed this post except the path is wrong, i put it in C:\swsetup\SP49493.

    when i followed the directions exactly, it said missing rom, in the config file platform.ini, there's this line:
    FileName=C:\swsetup\SP49493\01436.bin

    which is why i chose a different path than what the post said.

    Thanks, Ill try that tonight. So the .bin just needs to be moved to that path, Im assuming.

    I was able to update the BIOS on a clean install. I did however keep HP_TOOLS partition though. Upgraded from F.02 to F.05A using the guide in the first post.

    My friend also clean installed, but he removed his HP_TOOLS partition. He followed the same guide and successfully upgraded BIOS from F.02 to F.05A.

    Hello everyone,
    I know many people asked before me about this but I followed the 1st post to update my bios to the newest version F.12
    I downloaded the file through this link
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49501-50000/sp49999.exe
    Did the steps extracting and copy and stuff
    when I ran Insyde, gave me an error message that there are not ROM.
    I didn't want to try to twike things before I ask you guys since you already done it right.
    btw, I have the HP_TOOL partition, do I need to copy anything there ? and I have F.05 installed already when I received

    P.S. trying to follow up with the people comment got confused since everybody done a different versions

    I just extracted the spXXXXX.exe file, and then extracted the winflash.exe file into a folder. Update the platform.ini file to force flash. In other words, change ALL=0 to ALL=1 under the [ForceFlash] section. Once complete, run InsydeFlash.exe as an administrator.

    I have a clean Windows7 Ultimate install, and the bios update worked fine. This is the same approach as the first post, except you don't have to bother copying bin files. Just download, extract the files, edit the ini, run the application. Credit goes to shaolinx for the details.

    What's the point of HP_TOOL partition since I won't be using it on updating the BIOS ?

    Yeah dude, I don't know what to do with the HP_Tools partition. I don't know about you, but it sorta bothers me that I'm wasting 100 MB of space... yeah its only 0.02% of my HDD but I just don't like it extra wasted partition sitting there doing nothing lol.

    @Mike
    Have you gotten your BIOS to update yet? Would be nice to have multiple ways of getting BIOS to update here.

    Ya, I did manage it tonight. I used the method in th first page, but put the .bin in the correct location as specified in the config file which I forget the name of.

    New BIOS helped my trackpad a lot actually. Like it doesnt glitch and jump around as much when two finger scrolling.

    I have noticed (From F.05 to F.12):
    Better touchpad (Less jumpy with 2 finger scroll)
    No difference in fan spin
    No difference in battery life (Already got 3.5-4.5 est.)
    No difference in whine (Whine audible, but not annoying, in perfect quiet)

    Then...do it? Although updating BIOS can have some risks I think 99.9% of the time it will be fine. Just don't do some stupid like unplug the power or close the lid or something.

    My envy started hard crashing after about 15 minutes of gameplay in starcraft 2 after updating to F.12 where it used to only crash in armory for me. Be warned.

    In the future, if I upgrade the BIOS by downloading the SP file, extracting it, then extracting winflash.exe, do I still need to edit platform.ini to change ALL=0 to ALL=1 in the ForceFlash section before running InsydeFlash? Or, was that tweak only because of some specific issues with upgrading to F.05A? The change allows the BIOS updater to overwrite protected areas of the BIOS. Why would this be necessary for a normal BIOS upgrade, and if it was, wouldn't the flag already be set in platform.ini?

    As of F12 and all previous updates, it still requires the force ALL=1 for clean installs. I would love to know the answer to your question as to why it was not preset in the config but there is probably some code that prevents it from updating the bios unless it was on stock with the HP_TOOLs partitions. Sure, its more risky updating everything... but it shouldn't be a problem if they designed the SP file to be able to have that capability.
