Okay, so Envy 14 has emerged in the UK, not even sure how long it’s been out, just been trying to follow the Owners forum page, which is now nigh impossible to make head or tails of.

Anyway, so this is for UK discussion only (if that’s okay gents?)

Just had a quick look at the HP website, and it seems that we can’t spec our laptops, and that we’re missing out on various things our friends across the pond and in Germany can get.

What do we think guys, are we being short changed here? Anyone placing orders?

    massively short changed!
The main reason is the P*ss poor screen on the UK model. I dont mind the high price, but at least give me the one thing that really sets the envy 14 apart from the acer 3820's etc.

I have ordered mine from the states when it was released as I knew we would get screwed over here just like we did with the envy 15.

WFT! Just phoned HP, not only is not on the Website any more, but apparently not for sale at all. Wankers! (apologies)

HP Laptops - HP Envy 14-1050ea

found this on google. maybe a premature upload?? £999 for Core i5 450, 500GB, ATI HD 5650, 4gb Ram

not too shabby. i guess. Mind you we still get screwed over the exchange rate but not by much since we still have to pay VAT.

Im with you on that one. Just will need to source a UK keyboard then I will be happy.

Maybe if there is enough wanting a UK keyboard then a groupbuy can be setup?

    @Ninja2000

Where did you order yours in the US from?

I used opal_cadet on Ebay, specs in sig cost me £850 but I will also get hit with customs.

And count me in on a UK keyboard group buy :)

We, in the UK, can't get enough of the crap screens, sub-part processors, and overpriced, outdated laptops. You guys should thank us for finding a good home for your unwanted, unloved rubbish.

hahaha classic but so true. I actually hate reading through these forums looking at all these great cheap laptops that will never appear in the UK!
No wonder we dropped the Great Britain moniker years ago...

Is there anything that can be done about warranty?

Apparantly you can call HP and get the USA warranty overwritten for about £60 (2yrs I think). I havent tried this yet, but probably will when it arrives.

humm, well I printed off the pdf spec sheet that was online last night, and in that it says

    "Premium 36.8 cm (14.5") display
Enjoy the highest brightness and colour gamut with the optional radiance
display. It delivers optimum brightness, contrast and clarity, plus super-wide
viewing angle technology so you see more of the display in any position."

The "optional radiance" bit, does that mean we get the decent screen too, or is the 1366 x 768 one radiance aswell?

    They're both radiance I believe.

Sad news, guess I won't be buying an Envy 14 after all. The 1600x900 screen was exactly what I was after!

So annoyed, why on earth does hp think they can get away with this? do they think uk consumers are idiots?, really don't want to import one bit scary if it gets lost, and I want to have a warranty i can rely on.

just worked out the cost including import duty from opal and it came to £1141, how did you mange to score one for £850? and can you keep us updated on the warranty ninja?

Well my config came to $1180 plus $97 shipping. so with the 1.48 conversion it came to £863, I also went through quidco and got another £15 back.

Obviously I will get hit with customs when it arrives, so I expect it to come out about £1010 in total.

I will update later how much my customs are exactly and how I get on with HP for the warranty

I'm confused as to what exactly we're missing out on. Reckon going by the pdf the screen will be an option, as will RAM; so is it just i7 we lack?

Also, with the lack of beats thing, does anyone know if UK 15's and 13's had beats audio?

    Hi guys.

I've been looking into getting either this or a Macbook Pro 15. I was wondering what is wrong with the UK configuration? Something to do with the screen resolution?

Can anyone put it in lamens terms? lol

    Thanks

Basically, in the US and Germany they get 1600*900 screen. Where as we get a 13xx*768 screen. Which means in the US and Germany they will get a sharper image and they can fit more on the screen. It was the big thing about the Envy in the first place. Without it, its pretty much just another laptop.

the 900p radiance screen is also 60% brighter than normal screens with better viewing angles and colour gamut.
Basically the same thing happened with the envy 15, the US got a great 1080p screen and the UK got a nasty, dull poor contrast 720p screen.

Davidevo - I am sure the UK version will include the beats as I dont think they actually make another version of speakers/sound cards for the envy. And the 15 still had the beats over here

So if I understand correctly there is no way to get a CTO version? I wanted to get the i3 version with the 1600x900 screen which I thought was the base version

Has anyone tried to contact HP UK to check if we can still get the radiance screen here?

    Thanks guys1

We all gonna have to badger them senseless to get them to have the Radiance display as an option, I'm afraid. Then they'll just have to shift their Crapview displays to Albanians or whoever is further down the pecking order.

I have no idea why the first model they choose to launch would be so mediocre - surely you would launch one of the high-end models first?

Anyway, I looked at the HP support pages and I think that gives away that they will launch more models in the UK. Here was the list:

HP ENVY 14-1000 Notebook PC series
» HP ENVY 14-1000xx Notebook PC
» HP Envy 14-1001tx Notebook PC
» HP Envy 14-1003tx Notebook PC
» HP ENVY 14-1006tx Notebook PC
» HP ENVY 14-1007tx Notebook PC
» HP ENVY 14-1008tx Notebook PC
» HP Envy 14-1010eg Notebook PC
» HP ENVY 14-1011tx Notebook PC
» HP ENVY 14-1050ca Notebook PC
» HP ENVY 14-1095la Notebook PC
» HP Envy 14-1099ee Notebook PC
» HP ENVY 14t-1000 CTO Notebook PC

And according to that list, the 1050ca (which appears to be the one listed on the UK site), has Beats Audio.

Edit: or not. UK site lists 1050 ea, not 1050ca. D'oh!

One last thought, on the specs for Envys such as the 14-1095LA (which is on the UK list too). It lists things like ports and sound - does this really mean that on the ones without such things listed (14-1011tx for instance) that they don't have things like on/off click pad or beats....

Either ways we are going to get shafted one way or the other, if not on specs it will be on price.

Looks like State side or ebay is prob the best place to get one.

Rip off Britain again. We always come out worse on these things.

I don't think there' will be that much difference between models. It will be what's available for customisation from US builds. With maybe warranty difference, software, ect... So same ports, audio, and so on.

Guys, you are looking at worldwide issue of Envy 14's. We wont see any of those.

We will only see models ending in ea in the UK. ie the current model is 1050ea.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but no other model has currently been anounced. We may get lucky and get a higher spec at some point but I wouldnt hold your breath for getting it in 2010

US prices are advertised without sales tax. UK prices include sales tax (i.e. VAT @ 17.5%).

    So, 850 + 17.5% = 998.75.

It's a bugger, and I doubt anyone ever gets laptops delivered through customs without paying. Saying that, I live in Poland and god only knows what my options for this are going to be ;)

That still offers better value than the UK version (£999) since it has a higher spec CPU (i5 520 vs i5 450), and a better display (900P vs 720P), and that includes the price he has to pay to ship it!

So why the hell can't HP offer a couple of models to the UK?

I would love to be wrong, but I have followed HP products for a while as I wanted a DV6 with ati 4650 which never appeared over here, then an envy 15 with 1080p and i5 which again never appeared over here. When I saw the envy 14 advertised I knew it sounded perefect for me but I also knew we would never get the spec I wanted so I decided to order straight from the US rather than wait and be dissappointed in the UK spec
