This confirms all my fears - I have to get the 1600x900 resolution...
Even with my UK friends and family discount I'm just not willing to sacrifice... Argh, F You HP.
Oh and from what I gathered from HP, as long as the parts are available we will be ok for warranty. However, the high resolution screen isn't available in the UK, so I doubt they will replace it with that (if it was required)... -
Right, so now it appears that ALMOST everyone is probably going to import this with the 1600x900 screen, what is "our" plan of attack? eBay, even though it will probably come out more expensive?
-
Buying from one of the ebay sellers you'd get credit card/paypal protection, and even with the $160 postage/courier cost you could have one for less than the UK price, but with the 1600x900 panel everyone wants. HOWEVER, as soon as it passes through HM Customs and Excise grubby little paws, you risk another £150 - £200 going on top, which is really going to hurt.
I do'nt see a (sure fire) way around that. Maybe you'd get away with it, maybe you wouldn't. I'm doubtful, and it's a lot of extra money to risk. -
It's like playing a game of Risk, only instead of losing little plastic soldiers, you could lose a £1000 laptop
-
if you are ordering from the UK, you can use this code; HPDISVR5 for 5% off, works on JAYJAYs link and as mentions another 8% from quidco making it £716!
still gutted about the screen. -

Well lads, i'm pretty much decided - was searching or alturnatives til the wee hours last night, and since i got back from work today - i am ordering a UK Envy, crappy screen and all.
Because i'm using a uni grant, i really have to order it from the UK which sucks, but, there's simply no other laptops that comes close to offering what the Envy does, it's the perfect size, ample power, great sound, gorgeous design, and even though it's not the radience, reckon the screen should still be pretty decent.
Plus, who knows in a year or so, my screen might just accidently break and be replaced by radiance
At the end of the day, while it feels very very sore getting second best from HP, as far as i can tell nothing else in the UK comes close to the envy's second best... -
If importing becomes too much of a headache it might be quite a viable option
Im sure you'll be stupidly happy with your envy, no matter what resolution you end up with! So enjoy it -
Cheers mate
, a thought which has just occurred to me (clinging to hope), the 1366 x 768 uses the same tech as the Envy 15 screen, it's essentially a smaller version of it no? And we all liked the 15 screen lots, right?
David -
Well we could all club together and buy in bulk direct from China and distribute accordingly? Long shot of course lol

So the plan is to have this one until the better comes out in my estimated guess of 6 months plus.
at least we still have the amazing beats audio, ATI 5650 (switchable) and i5-450. not forgetting the little features such as low light HD webcam, display port with Eyefinity enabled and a nice discrete slot loads drive. Closest Windows alternative to the MBP -
I got my sums wrong, I was wondering how you got down to £716 from the £999 price, but of course that was from the vastly reduced price that Jayjay pointed us towards with his url.
I wonder if HP will honour that reduced price.. it seems odd to have it tucked away there at such a big discount. -
Jay, my thoughts exactly mate, it's not as if in the UK we really have an option for better screens from another laptop. I've read nothing but bad things about the 14" 1600 x 900 screen on the HP 8440p, and the only thing that comes close is the Dell Studio 15, which when i specced it up came to £1,300! Plus, i will not buy sony
Reckon this really is the best laptop about, and the tart in me just thinks it's pretty as! haha
David -
You never know, it might be like the Canadians and we are actually going to end up with 1600x900 Radiance screens...a guy can dream, right?
-
Daaah, don't do that to me man! just resigned myslef to being happy with Brightview
-
It's understandable you're feeling a bit put out at not having the 1600x900 Radiance panel, but the UK spec one isn't bad. It's simply a decent quality, standard panel, the same as on almost all lappys of this size, so you're not buying a turkey or anything.
You still get the beautiful design, slim form, good battery life, great cpu, good graphics capability and all the other little bits and pieces.
I'm willing to bet the Beats Audio is a bit of marketing guff though... this is a laptop, it ain't ever gonna sound good.
If you are going to do it via Quidco (and you should if possible) then be VERY careful to clear all yoru cookies etc first. You need to erase all traces of the HP websites from your cache, and all the related cookies. Then, make sure your browser accepts tracking cookies and load up Quidco, use their link to go to HP website, THEN use JayJay's link to navigate to the reduced price Envy, and complete your purchase in one hit, using the additional 5% off code at checkout. I reckon that should give you the best chance of claiming both reductions.
Quidco are pretty reliable, I've always had my money from them, except on one transaction the retailer unfairly rejected (screw you LaptopsDirect!). It can sometimes take a couple of months for the cashback to work it's way to you, but they're reliable. -
But there's only so long i can wait... -
Man, if we could order in bulk from somewhere then i'd be totally up for doing that -
Has anyone here tried to contact HP about the lack of Radiance screen ? It might actually come as an update later, or am I just dreaming
?
-
Complaining won't do much good either
I wonder if it's possible for HP to order units from the states, to be delivered over here? Im sure it goes against there business model or something but they must have some sort of contact.
Again, just dreaming -
Just my frustration at HP UK -
lol
I wonder if I could persuade one of the lovely, amazing, fantastic United States of America citizens, to pick up an Envy 14 and ship it for me... -
i told the manager i am in a community of people which have been waiting for the Envy 14 for a long time and now have come to be disappointed by the screen given on what is suppose to be a premium product which is suppose to be differentiated from others. She said if i have evidence of customers turning away from HPs product she can send it onto people that might be able to make a change in the future of that product. so i sent her an email with this thread in which show how angered we all are about it and all our reconsiderations.
I doubt i will hear anything more as HP have enough revenue to carry on without our custom and dont really seems to care unless its to do with the US. -
Lets get our Envy's -
Jay...David...You have my full backing guys...go gettem'
*waits* -
-
Aye mate, good shout i reckon. That said, even if HP do read this thred we're still bending over and buying whatever they give us
When you ordering then? I'm gunna try and ring from work tommrow if i get a chance
David -
Just off topic for a moment, but is it wrong that as I sit here, reading this topic and constantly hammering F5 to see if anyone else has replied, that im humming "Maniac by Michael Sembello"...I think I need professional help
-
haha, nah mate it's all good
So glad i stumbled on this place - great little corner of the internet
David -
You say that now... you wait, just you wait
-
I just noticed, that link from JayJay indicates the reduced price is part of some promo deal, and the Envy there comes bundled WITH an HP inkjet printer and usb cable.
Okay, it's only a cheap printer, but blimey, it make the deal very cheap indeed with the 5% discont code, and the quidco 8%. -
Ordering either tomorrow or definitely friday... really cant wait to know that its on its way. and get this... the cheaper option says that the laptop is available immediately whereas the £999 one says within two weeks so hopefully that parts trueand we get a cheap most prob pants printer lol
-
guys the cheap link you're talking about is part of HP Business, not home & office. Are there any conditions for you to join HP Business??
-
Looks like the Envy 14 is on sale in Germany with the 1600x900 Radiance panel.
There's this E14 video review by a German guy up on youtube:
YouTube - HP Envy 14 - a first look.
The E14 seems to be listed here at the German HP website, and, although I can't read German, the spec clearly says Radiance:
HP Envy Home Notebook-PCs - Vergleichsergebnisse Privatanwender - HP
Price is 1300 euros, so slightly more than the standard UK retail price, but there would be absolutely no import tax or duty when shipping one into the UK from Germany.
Maybe worth considering? -
Could be but it will come with a QWERTZ keyboard! -
Seeing as the Envy is being sold over here (finally) im sure a UK keyboard could be found over here and then installed.
I think that could possibly be a better idea than importing from the US but it's swings and roundabouts, you lose the hassle of import tax and customs but you gain the hassle of HAVING to swap out a keyboard.
EDIT: Also has anyone actually tried to buy that "cheap" Envy? I just did, I added it to the basket but then when I went to checkout it said that my basket was empty. So maybe it's not actually available at the cheaper price -
Hi guys, found this thread the other day. I was in the same position as everyone else, wanting the better screen. When I saw JayJay's link to the cheaper price, I decided to go for that. Paying £999 for a worse spec than the US seemed painful but at the cheaper price it's a bargain! I used the 5% discount code and also tried to use Quidco, but I'm not sure if that worked out. Anyway, I have had an order acknowledged, then order accepted email. So it looks like it's all going through at the price of £775.80.
-
When I hit the buy button the Envy 14 is added to my basket, along with a D2600 printer and Belkin USB cable. The checkout page accepts the 5% HPDISVR5 discount code and brings the total payable to down £775.80 (including VAT). If I continue on it then wants my address and payment details, so it looks pukka to me.
It's a good deal at that price, and if I didn't have a friend bringing me back a US model I would jump all over this offer (trying to get the Quidco 8% off as well of course). -
Apprerciate it if you could drop back and update us on delivery date and first impressions.
What are you gonna do with your cheapo 30 quid printer? -
If you do manage to get it for £775 then you have yourself a bargain of a notebook, even with the lower resolution screen.
Will you give us your reactions on the model when you get it?
-
As for the printer, perhaps give it away or use it to prop a door open. On the other hand, my current printer is a Lexmark, so maybe it'll be an improvement! -
EDIT: Seems HP have now taken down the page with the cheaper price. Maybe I got in just in time... -
