    Haha not a problem
If/when I import from the US then it won't have a warranty
I believe the wording in the HP Total Care terms states that the warranty is only valid if A) HP are active in your country...which they are and B) If they offer/have available to them the components of the laptop you own...which they don't because I want to get the radiance screen.

I've not actually ordered the machine yet, i just wondered if the imported machines get checked at any stage for issues because if I received a "lemon" then it would just be so much hassle trying to send it back for a new one etc

the warranty still should be covered for repairs and such... the only thing they cudn't repair would be the screen but the rest of the components can still be changed. HP UK aren't as bad as people think when it comes to warranties and such, you just need to pester them enough to get you through to second line or a case manager.

I think I'm going to stuff the radiance screen and get it from the UK.
Should be able to get it with coupons for 900 pounds if not less.

I've only ever owned one laptop before - Toshiba that has lasted me for 3 years without a single problem. But then again, I'm not going to risk 1000+ dollars to get something I'm going to regret if anything is wrong with (and were seeing a lot of those...).

Might even be able to upgrade the screen later on. I'm coming from a non 1280x800 resolution on a 15" inch screen, so the Brightview envy should still feel like an upgrade...

I believe there is a different webcam required fro the radiance screen to work. This is shown in the options on the US CTO website.

I should imagine the webcam comes included with the screen, built-in. I have no idea why it's listed as an option on the US configuration anyway.

    I might be wrong

My mate bought a HP dm4 the other day the screen is basically the same as the Envys except the Envys is an infinity display as well meaning it has edge to edge glass covering the screen plus bordering around it.. I have to say the screen is an improvement from the HP screens last year which i am using now.

I went with the UK Envy and seeing my mates screen (being 14" only 0.5£ off an Envy14 screen) i am going to still be very happy with it... plus it has all the other pluses such as beats audio etc :D

Would be really sad if HP introduced the radiance screen, and all the good people here and early adopters got offered the brightview. hell hath no fury like a fanboy scorned!

That's why I'm holding on in dear hope that HP will smarten up and offer the radiance screen. Else, well, I always have my UL30A.

Oh yer sure they will.... but u wont see any with this generation of Envy 14's. they need to make their money on these models first before the next generation come... and that takes usual a minimum of 6 months if u look at the past track record HP has

Another thing people need to consider about the UK display (if your trying to make urself feel better about it) is that if your someone who needs the envy for portability well you will prob get more battery life than everyone else as the UK screen is not the 350nit brightest display in the world (on a laptop that is) and isnt going to need that extra juice to power it. So there ya little plus side lol :D

plus as i said earlier the quality of the screen is still very nice and better than the screens HP had on laptops last year!!

    Haha!
That is indeed putting a silver lining on the situation!
It doesn't convince me though :(
I don't know what to do
Curse you HP UK for putting me through this!

I would just like to say though that I should imagine even the Brightview screen will be an upgrade to many people, depending what they had before-hand. For me I had a Dell Inspiron 1520, which was good but never great, so going to the Brightview screen will probably be nice...if you can see what im trying to get at?

well i have thought that as soon as HP start having replacement 1600x900 screens i will get one of them shipped into the UK and swap mine over. especially as HP have made the Envy 14 so easy to take apart and replacing a screen is so simple!

I don't really care about BrightView I just need extra screen space and 1600x900 was perfect. Dam you HP, you would have had so many more customers otherwise.

Right now the Envy 14 just looks like a fancy Acer...

Yeah that could be an option but I dread to think how much the screen could cost if it came to the UK.

I don't like to say it but I kind of agree. Think about it, the new Acer's have the exact same components and similar screens, so HP are basically asking you to spend the best part of £300 for "Beats Audio", which I believe is software based anyway and the metal chassis

Envy 14 is more like 15'' MacBook Pro. There are a few videos on the tube comparing both.

It's hugely irritating. I've previously played the game of choosing faster CPU, disk and more memory over display for laptops that I want to develop on, but have had enough and *WANT* a higher screen resolution.

So, that leaves me with VAIO E-series or Dell studio 15 - neither brand I really trust based on completely unfounded biases ;)

Anyone have any thoughts about getting a refurbished MacBook Pro? Refurbished Mac - Apple Store (U.K.)

According to the HP site my Envy has just shipped, hopefully should be here tomorrow. Good thing too, I refreshed the order tracking page WAY too many times. Really looking forward to receiving it, hope I won't find the screen too much of a compromise. Though for the price I got, I can't complain, big thanks to JayJay for spotting that page and telling us!

You can get the Envy 14 for 1300 euros from germany and have it forwarded for 20 euros... It includes the radiance display there...

The only problem is having the keyboard changed and the warranty. Any input someone?

That's exactly what I am going to do, expect that I'm in France.

How can you have the laptop forwarded ? Is there an extra HP service to do that of you use another website that delivers in Europe ? Maybe there is a forwarding company that forwards stuff you buy in Germany to Europe...

Yes, you can use a third a party forwarding service, and it wouldn't be very expensive to forward within Europe. We need to find a reliable company though.

Does anyone know if HP uk are providing UK keyboards?

THe warranty is simple - a laptop purchased anywhere in the EU must come with a 2 year warranty within the EU, it's the law.

Not entirely sure what's going on with my order at the moment, it hasn't been delivered yet HP say it's been delivered and signed for. There may be a mix up as the printer was sent and signed for separately. Nowhere on the packing slip or anywhere else did it mention another box though. Also they only took the money out my account this week, just after the status changed to shipped. The printer was received last week. They are raising the issue with City Link. Annoying...

UPDATE: doesn't seem to be City Link's fault, I checked with them myself and they only had one consignment to my address logged. It weighed 4kg and consisted of two items. So that's just the printer and the cable then. Seems HP messed up, now I wait a few days while they bark up the wrong tree and try to work out what they have actually done!

There's no mistake, you paid £800 for a printer and USB cable :D

I'm sure they'll sort it out for you eventually. A few extra days faffing about is a small price to pay for the honour of getting that whopping discount off the UK standard price.

I placed my order just an hour ago:

    i5-450M processor, 4gb RAM (1 Dimm), 500gb 7200rpm HDD and 1600x900 Radiance panel, all for £834.

Postage and import VAT will add a fair whack on top, but I reckon it's going to be very close to the UK price, and with the upgraded spec.

A friend of mine who works in IT procurement is getting me a brand new Intel X25 160GB SSD so I'll be swapping that in as the primary drive as soon as it all arrives, and moving the 500gb HDD into the spot occupied by the optical dvd drive. Add in the additional 4gb of ram I'm ordering from Crucial UK, and it's going to be a monster. Hehehe.

Incidently, I can get ONE more Intel X25 160gb SSD (brand new) for about £230 if anyone is interested, they retail at £350 ish so that's a big discount. PM me if you're interested.

    Sounds about right!
Hopefully they'll sort it out for you soon
As Gertch said the few extra days of hassle is probably off-set by the discount you managed to get on the machine :)
If you think about it, you probably have the best "value for money" Envy 14 out of anyone on the entire forum

    Thats pretty awesome
May I ask where you ordered from, eBay? Opal_Cadet?
The P&P charges are all about £150 now and then add whatever import charges are on top
It's probably more expensive than the UK version but im sure if the UK had the radiance screen then that would bump up the price too. So not bad at all really :)

How do you feel about the whole "lack of warranty" thing?

I know some people have said HP's warranty is international and so everything except the screen (and possibly RAM if you chose 1 Dimm?) should be covered, providing you have the 450M etc etc etc but im still not convinced.

P.s. Enjoy your new Envy! :D

EDIT: I've just been looking up third part insurers to see if any of them will offer insurance on an imported model, so far no luck, they all say " Only equipment of UK specification may be insured under the policy". Has anyone else tried looking for other insurers?

I think that honour goes to Ninja. He got his from the US when the standard price with Radiance panel was $100 lower, the shipping charges were half what they are now, and, he hasn't (last we heard from him) actually received a bill for any import duty.

Yep, and so far she has been very helpful. Swift communication and updates on expected build and shipping dates etc.

The postage cost is £100, not £150, and the import VAT and seems to be working out for most people as less than I first thought, at about £60 - £70. So, that should take me to just a smidgeon over the £999 base price of the lower spec UK model. Fingers crossed anyway, I'll see how it works out.

I'm not the least bit worried about warranty. HP's own website confirms I get standard 1 year UK coverage, and I've also purchased via credit card, which gives me additional protection. If it were to develop a problem it might be a bit more hassle than usual to get HP to fix it (getting past the "computer says no" call centre monkeys), but I'm damn good in that kind of a fight, and don't doubt for a second I'd get it taken care of.

My only real worry is if it turns up and it's a lemon. Then I'd have to reject it and return it to the US and that would be a pain in the arse.

hey anyone who has bought the UK Envy 14 and would like to in the future possibly upgrade their screen to the radiance screen well HP's part site might be able to help...

Envy 14 parts arent showing on their yet so I dont know the pricing on the screen but if its reasonable you should technically be able to order the screen.

I noticed when browsing the site on the Envy 13 they can provide u the complete screen with the glass, aluminium back and webcam and microphones integrated.

    Hopefully this can be done

    Heres the site anyways

    HP PartSurfer

(when searching search for the generation model of a particular laptop e.g. 15-1000 and in our case 14-1000 but there is nothing for the 14 yet)

Now this *is* interesting. I was thinking of maybe getting the 13 instead. I understand that the 14 is better, but the 13 is still pretty good and hasn't the click pad problems been "sorted" by the same fix as with the 14?

As with everyone else I'm chuffin' chuffed the chuff off with HP's lack of radiance goodness in the UK.

I was looking for a 13" screen anyway. Gah! this laptop buying business is touch aint it?

I'm tempted to just do it, the "free" 2 year extended warranty is pretty nice and it's less hassle than importing. Sure I won't have the radiance screen but I can always buy it separate if it's released over here and then install it myself

I've not heard of HP PartsSurfer before. I take it thats the "spares" site for HP? So how does it work, does the Radiance screen need to be available over here before I can buy it through the site or is it global i.e. Because it's sold in the US, I might be able to import just the screen?

    Tempting...

    Ah congrats!
You'll be able to change your sig now :)
Looking forward to your initial impressions and stuff

I think importing should work and i would rather import the screen that have my envy 14 travel across the globe .... the HP Part surfer site has other Envy models parts atm so i assume Envy 14 part will soon be available and then im buying my screen :D

love the fact the Envy has been made to be customised and taken apart easily this laptop could keep going for a few years with upgrades :)

    Hi there,

UK resident been looking at buying the HP Envy from the US and going to get a friend that is visiting soon to bring it over. I just noticed that the Radiance Infinity Display is no longer an option though, any one else seeing this or have any ideas what is going on?

    Thanks

So I recently bough the 13inch MBP. I'm pretty happy with it, I just think the screen is slightly smaller than I want as I'm going to be a doing a lot of work on it.

So question is should I sell the MBP and get an Envy14 (note I've only got the UK spec option and don't want to import. How do the two laptops compare?

Just got my Envy! literally only just opened the box but so far so good. Build quality seems spot on. What you don't really understand from the unboxing pics is just how solid and quality everything feels. Even the box feels like a premium product. Going to get it up and running, I'll post later.

Oh well I just went and impulsively bought it! lol. Will compare it to the MBP and then send back/ sell whichever.

5% off code works on the Envy site, duno if anyones mentioned it you get about 50 quid off. (HPDISVR5)
