The slice is about 62k to the stock battery's 59k, so its capacity is a bit higher, but you can pretty much look on it as a doubling battery life sincethey're so close.

Powerplay is off. I turned it off since I figure the majority of the time I am on battery I would use the Intel graphics anyway. I was only gaming on battery just to test it out to see how long I would have.

    Bluetooth and Wifi on
    Balanced Power profile
    Screen brightness at maximum
    Backlit keyboard on
Surfing the internet and MS Word

    1:38 before going into hibernation.

Hooked up to my TV with wifi, bluetooth and keyboard backlit off playing a movie gave me 1:42 before going into hibernation.

According to Battery Bar my discharge rate is constantly between 45k-55k no matter what power plan I'm on, which is among the highest I’ve ever seen on any laptop I’ve owned. Is this indicative of a faulty battery, or is less than two hours normal for the i7? Looking at other people's numbers, mine seems pretty low. I thought I should be able to get at least about two hours out of the stock battery.

I'm thinking about getting the slice battery, but I can't find it anywhere on HP Japan's website.

well while it's 199 on the HP store.

it apparently is $128 on the HP parts store.

    so...well.

yeah. This assumes that this is the slice (it 95% is just because it's the correct whr (62), Ah (2.80) and stuff and was gotten from the maintenance manual's part list).

    there's the part number. 602410-001

HP Parts Store - HP Computer Parts - HP Printer Parts - Compaq Parts

put that part # in the search by part number thing.

1-800-227-8164 is the parts store phone number for the US.

brightness- lowest setting. keyboard light off.

batterybar is showing around 3:30 under normal use. oddly, whenever I turn off wifi it doesn't seem to make a bit of difference- maybe the battery bar app is just VERY slow to update. I have not done a thorough typical full run down though. I was really hoping to get 4 hrs out of this so I'm a bit disappointed but not too surprised

Battery bar tells my 3:30 hours usually when I end up getting 4:30 usually. Do your own times run.

    Hi folks!

New Envy 14 user - just joined the forum. I got it last week and have been disappointed with the battery life.

    i7-720QM, 4GB DDR3 (1 Dimm), 500GB 7200RPM, 8 Cell (standard), 14.5" (1366x768)

My main concern is that when I turned it on for the very first time I got this message before Windows bootup:

    ************************
    HP Battery Alert

The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low.

For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.

    Primary (internal) Battery (601)

    ENTER - Continue Startup

For more information, please visit: www.hp.com\go\techcenter\startup
    ***********************

    Did anyone else get this?

I did 3-4 complete power cycles in the past week and this is where I am at now.

Out-of-the-box install (uninstalled 90% of all the bloatware). Turned off quite a few Windows services by following this guide: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Service Configurations by Black Viper

    ~63 processes
    Brightness 30%
Wifi On, Roaming and Transmit set to lowest
    Bluetooth off
On ATI GPU but set to Max energy saving mode
    No processor usage tweaks

With about 2 hours of medium web browsing (3-5 tabs open on google chrome - forums, gmail etc, nothing flash heavy and no videos) + 1 hr idle = 3 hours battery life before hibernating.

With Wifi off and NO activity = 4 hours

I'm not satisfied with it, especially when they advertise 6 hours. Should i request a replacement battery? Do you think HP will consider?

    Thanks in advance!

I can't speak to battery life with an i7, since mine has an i5. But, I received that error at first boot as well. I've noticed that since then, my battery shows greater than design capacity, and my battery life is fine. So, I'm guessing the error is just related to the battery having shipped with low capacity or needing to be charged to re-sync (or something).

go run hwmonitor and see what the capacity is for the battery. (see if it has a large wear% or something)

    BatteryBar:
    Discharge Rate: -12172 mW
    Full lifetime: 4:24
Battery wear: 4.3% of 59,200 mWh

    HWMonitor wear level: 4%

    HWMonitor screenshot attached.

Does ~4% wear mean it's a bad battery?

    thanks again!

    no. that looks normal.

I'm gonna just say you didn't let it charge and it gave a false warning message or something.

edit: for reference my wear is like 3.8 or 3.9%

Well this is frustrating. I did a Minimized Image Recovery when I got mine a month or so back, and now I have around 90 processes running. Not sure where they came from.

But now when I'm just posting on a forum, I'm getting over 20k discharge rates, which is unacceptable. My battery life dropped from 80% to 60% in half an hour, and this is with power saving settings and discrete GPU off. It might be time to do a more thorough test. And now my battery wear has steadily increased from 3% to 8% over the span of those months; is this normal?

Hmm, for me Battery Bar is telling me this:

    BatteryBar:
    Full lifetime: 2:38
Battery wear: 3.3% of 59,200 mWh

It says I only get 2 hours and 38 mins...I barely use my Envy without power cable but I'm not sure how everyone else is getting 4hours+ ...I've looked through the forums and there is not really a tweak to do. Any solutions guys? Thanks!

well some of us are on i5s

if you're on an i7 that life makes some sense.

finally batterybar's kinda bad at estimating battery life at times (% left is usually good though)

Heh, I know what you mean. BatteryBar can be a bit inconsistent for me. I've been using it for a couple of months and it varies Discharge Rate from -12,000 mW to about -20,000 mW, just surfing with integrated graphics on and 30-40% brightness. Averages at about 13,500 mW now

BatteryBar usually says just under 2 hours Full Lifetime, but I actually get 2.5 to 3 hours. Switching from Norton to Microsoft Security Essentials has helped increase battery life loads, but I don't think I could get 4+ hours at the moment.

BatteryBar says my Battery Wear is 4.5%. It said 5-6% for the last month, so I guess it's just finding an average.

Oh really? Microsoft Security Essentials helps battery that much? Because I exclusively use Norton cause it came with the E14 for a whole years worth of subscription...

I have always had Norton too, but switched when I got my Envy. I asked a few prolific posters on these forums, and most people recommend Microsoft Security Essentials at the moment. MSE is free to download, so it's an easy switch. I used CCleaner to properly uninstall/get rid of Norton. I plan to do a proper clean install (when I decide on a SSD to get), which seems to help reduce unwanted processes and therefore improve battery life a little bit more.

My charge has been dropping normally from about 40% to 33% now (with the slice), at around 12k draw, but BatteryBar's estimates have been climbing this whole time - it says I've got 6:25 left, with 40k mWh left and a discharge rate of -12.5k.

I've seen some weird ones, but this beats them all for me.

    Bizarre

So after being disappointed by the 2 hr 30 mins moderate web browsing and word processing battery life, I called HP and they were nice enough to order a replacement battery for me right away, which I received in 2 days! Awesome customer service!

But this replacement battery isn't cutting it either. I'm getting just about 3 hours with the same amount of activity when on the HP recommended plan (which is what the representative suggested I do when measuring battery life) with about 40% brightness.

Battery life is a priority for me - so I'm thinking would it be better to switch my i7 envy for an i5 envy with the switchable graphics? Looks like a lot of people on the forum are getting > 4hrs because of their i5s. I can sacrifice some performance for an extra hour or two of battery life.

Would you do it and would HP let me do it? I've had the laptop for about 15 days now.

    thanks!

I did the same thing and they offered me $200 not to trade it in but I told them I'd rather have an i5 and twice the battery. I ended up getting 100 off the i5 one anyway. don't be a mean to them on the phone and they'll hook you up.

    Thanks for the reply guys!

I called hp, told them I'm not satisfied with the battery life, and found out that the switch to an i5 is no problem cuz I'm within the 21 day return policy.

Ordered it with the i5-580M. Production will start as soon as I drop the i7 off to a fedex location. They even bumped me up to 2 day shipping cuz of the inconvenience.

I guess companies are starting to realize good customer service is directly proportional to customer loyalty!

Very nice. I've had nothing but great customer service with HP. Both with their consumer and business customer service.

But many have not been so lucky. I can't really pin down why? I've been looking into it to see if there's a pattern. So far nothing to report. And that's after 2 years of trying to figure out why.

For certain, though, being belligerent, rude and or threatening doesn't help in the least. By that goes without saying.

Yeah, you'd think so, but a lot of times that's what happens. Customers pick up the phone with the attitude that the guy on the other end has personally insulted him. The representative and his/her supervisor are both human beings. I have friend who used to work in customer service and he said more often than not the supervisor will take his side when the customer is being an a-hole.

anyone running linux with an i7?
is so have you tried turning off cores to save power and extend the battery life as you apparently can do that on the fly?

also any sort of underclocking/undervolting both on the CPU and possibly also the GPU if possible (i'm not familiar with ATI, but I know nvidia has a control tool to change the clock speed and maybe underclocking would save power)?

Yeah it's known that with the i7 without integrated graphics only get 2.5-3hours at best. i5 would be 4+ hours. What would help more is a power sipping SSD like the Intel.

First charge first drain. 2hrs to the 9% mark on the battery.
    i7 720QM
    8GB RAM (does it matter?)
    7200rpm 500GB HDD

I'm running a browser with maybe 20 tabs, playing pandora, have a web development app open for coding (no files loaded though actually, it's very idle) ....8% in the middle of typing this computer hibernated. Plugged in now. Anyway, I also have VMWare running Linux (fedora 14) and it's running a web server. I'm just setting things up. I have firefox running there too just with a single tab. Pidgin and that's about it. Fairly light load I think. 2hrs on the battery. Not as bad as I thought it might be. Considering I won't really be away from an outlet for a long period of time (I don't exactly do web development in the woods on camping trips), I'm happy. Laptop is FAR too large to use on a plane I have a netbook for that. So, yea not too bad.

    Hi everyone,

I have been contemplating buying the slice battery for some time and found a source of buying it at last. Since I travel a lot it would be very nice to be able to use the laptop while traveling. Each of my trips is at least 24-36 hours of flights and stop-overs.

Do you guys recommend this battery or will I be better off buying a 10" tablet with 10hr battery?

I FINALLY realized that I had to adjust the settings in the Intel HD graphics control panel in order to maximize battery life while on battery. Of course that'll buy me more time. Common Sense 101 failed there...

But dont buy a netbook. Get an Asus U30/31 series used PC... that will be better.

I found this thread soon after ordering and found out about the lack of IGP and slightly higher power usage (45W vs 35W for i3/5). Damn me for not doing much research on this !!!

Now I am thinking I should have gone for the i5-520 and get the Slice / Slim Fit battery instead. I wonder if HP will let me exchange this one for the i5 and still keep my coupon (or at least keep some of the discount). Preliminary chats with HP support told me the coupon is not transferable, however I think supervisors may be more inclined to make compromises. What do you think?

Also many thanks to MagusDraco for pointing out the slice battery is available for $127 in the parts store !! It's listed in the hp store accessories for $139 but is not in stock and people on eBay are trying to sell it for well over $200 !!!

Can you point me to the place yo usaw the slice for cheap? Can it be ordered from UK or US only?

I am based in the UK and in need of the slice battery - on eBay as you mentioned they are expensive.

It would not find anything with the product number you provided.

I searched using this WQ385AA and found this:

HP Parts Store - HP Computer Parts - HP Printer Parts - Compaq Parts

    Not orderable.

Searching Google I found one shop but it sells them for $300 which is even more expensive tha eBay.

another thread seems to confirm that 602410-001 is the correct part number for the slice :

They got it off the maintenance manual so it should be reliable. As for the UK you may have to find the equivalent of HP parts in the UK. Or find a willing American to do the buying/shipping for you.

    Some more questions :
    - how long would the battery life be with an i7 and the slice battery?
    - can the i7 be undervolted on the envy14?
    - on battery mode, would setting the CPU max power set at like 5-10% save a lot?
    - will AMD GPU CLOCK or other tools help reduce the power consumption of the HD 5650 ?

    1) 2-2.5 hrs/no clue
    2) no
    3) no
    4) no

3/4 will save you a maximum of 15-30min, i tried EVERYTHING (core parking, core disabling, throttling, downclocking the 5650 to worse than 4500mhd, etc etc etc... still can't get past 2.5 hours)

For what it is worth, I have had my Envy 14 (spec's below) for roughly a week now. Battery run time: 2.25 hours / with Slice 5.25-5.5 hours (Balanced mode entire time, back light on, Blue tooth off, screen at roughly 75%, surfing the web and office stuff most of time). The Slice does add quite a bit of weight but manageable for me. I love this lap top coming from the Asus 13" UL A1 before, though I do miss the 10 hour battery life of the Asus. The Asus was awesome, just too small.

    Specs:
Clean Windows install - 7 Ultimate
    i7 840QM
    Radiance display
    8 GB
    5650 Graphics
Seagate Momentous XT Hybrid Drive (awesome btw)

I am pleased overall, but I my expectations were more realistic I guess.

So... is it confirmed that a clean install will help save more battery life as opposed to a reformat back to factory settings?

Kinda makes sense, less processes means less CPU usage ... ?¿

Can anyone with a slice battery weigh it ? I could not find that on google. Thanks

That's what I would have expected, too. The i7 (which draws quite a bit of power itself) has no IGP, so the 5650 is always activated and draining power.

Your time does seem quite good compared to what others are getting (even with the i5's), though. I've heard that the Beats Edition does actually have less battery life.
