I went to my local Microcenter to checkout the Envy 14, particularly the brightview display.

The screen looks as disappointing as others here have claimed. It was potentially the worst screen on display actually. The contrast ratio was noticeably low, and there is a definite speckle on the screen. Not awful, but not good, and definitely far from great.

The purpose of this post is not to bash the screen, nor create another Brightview vs Radiance display debate. I am more interested in finding a suitable replacement for it.

According to the Notebookcheck.net review, the brightview screen is an LG LP145WH1-TLB1.

There are a lot of varying opinion about the screen. Some people claim the only difference between the two is the resolution. This makes me believe there may be two types of brightview screens. Can you guys verify the screen you have by checking the hardware ID in the devices drivers?

The only other 14.5" screen I was able to find on the internet is this one made by Samsung: LTN145AT01. I am thinking about purchasing it and seeing if it works. Has anyone attempted to install this Samsung display or know whether it shares the same connection type?

My hardware ID is LGD02B6, which I'm guessing is the same one even though the ID isn't the same as the model no.

FWIW, I had the same issues with mine, sent my Envy to HP service and the potentially good news is that they said that the display is faulty and they are replacing it. The bad news is that they are out of stock of replacement displays and the expected date for it to come in is the 21st - almost a month after I sent it in. I won't know until after I get it back if the speckling issue is resolved but I'm crossing my fingers that it is.

You have an LG. I noticed the speckling issue on both the Envy 14 and Beats Edition that was on display. It would be awesome if it was a "defect", but I doubt it. Definitely keep us updated.

Some of us can perceive the speckle more easily than others. When my GF got her XPS a few years ago, she thought her screen was great. It was LED and really thin. Then I showed her my screen and pointed out the difference, she immediately noticed it...LOL. The XPS M1330 had three different manufacturers for their screen then. AUO, SEC (Samsung), LP (LG Phillips). I am hoping this is a case where we can do a swap of the LCD panel. People are doing it with the XPS 14 with great results.

the thing with the XPS 14 is that it's a 14.1" so there are many replacements..not too many screens for the 14.5" on the Envy as its not very common for a screen size

Also worth bearing in mind that others have posted that it is very difficult to disassemble to Envy 14 display and that for all intents and purposes the entire top lid of the notebook has to be replaced. I'm not sure why that would be (perhaps because of the Infinity edge-to-edge plastic layer that sits on top of the lcd panel?), but if true your replacement options will be limited to HP OEM.

As a related aside, I've speculated before that it could be the extra plastic layer on top (i.e. the Infinity edge to edge feature) that's causing the speckling. The only basis I have for this is that the dv5's I've looked at, which also have the 14.5 BV display, haven't had the same speckling issue, and as far as I know the only difference between those and the Envy is the extra Infinity layer on top.
