    Hey guys,

I've got an Envy 14 (pre SB) with a radiance display and I've had trouble with the optical drive since I got it. I haven't had a problem putting a CD into the drive, and the drive reads the CD just fine, but I've always had trouble getting the CD out. It appears to be a build quality issue because the upper part of the mouth of the slot droops down a bit, and that seems to be what is keeping CDs from ejecting.

When I first got the laptop I had some issues with it -- the CD wouldn't come out all the way and get pulled back in -- but it wasn't a huge deal becasue I could just grab the CD when it came out a bit and pull it out. Now, however, the CD won't come out at all.

I called HP and they're sending me a box to send it in for repair, but I need to use the CD drive in the meantime -- any suggestions on ways to get the CD out?

    Thanks!

Having been through something similar, I can tell you that your computer will probably have to be disassembled. I did it myself and was, thankfully, very careful. If you wanted, you could probably find a local repair shop that could disassemble it for $45 and remove the CD for you. You could probably get your computer back at the end of the day. A store like Best Buy will not do it that way -- they will send it out to be fixed.

You can try a pair of tweezers, but if you do, try to be very careful.

And that is the weakness of a slot-loading optical drive. Honestly, I was worried about that when I ordered mine. I haven't had and trouble with mine yet (knock on wood), but if I do, at least I bought the on-site contract.

The only minor issue I've encountered with the optical drive was one time when I picked it up while using a game DVD, I heard slight scraping noises, indicating some combination of things:
    1. Very tight clearance within the drive
    2. Minor flex in the Envy

Well, just as an update, I've sent it off to HP for repair. I'm worried that they'll just get the CD out of the drive and not fix the actual problem, but we'll see.

On a side note: the customer service folks at HP have been great so far -- really nice on the phone, very prompt, and helpful. I was most impressed that I got to a real person after only two choices on the phone tree (English and the Envy laptops).
