    For those of us that have noticed, it is kind of frustrating how HP limits the GPU clock speed on the 5650 to 450mhz. This is the lowest of the potential AMD claims this clock has.

    I have the i5 460m and the 1GB 5650, which seems pretty standard.

    Has anyone had any success overclocking the GPU? I've had headaches trying to figure out how to do it. MSI afterburner won't let me, and neither will any other tool I've tried. AMD GPU Clock Tool freezes my computer to the point that control+alt+delete doesn't work.

    Has anyone had any success overclocking this rig?

    you can do it using afterburner, I managed to overclock it to 550 mhz.
    just open msiafterburner.cfg with notepad and change the "enable unofficial overclocking" value to 1, save, enjoy

    Here's what it looks like for me, and it's still not working

    [ATIADLHAL]
    UnofficialOverclockingEULA = 1
    UnofficialOverclockingMode = 1
    AccessibilityCheckingPeriod = 1

    So I got it to work. Here's what I had to input:

    [ATIADLHAL]
    UnofficialOverclockingEULA = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
    UnofficialOverclockingMode = 2
    AccessibilityCheckingPeriod = 0

    Now here's another question.
    How hot would you say too hot is? The temp before the OC was running right around 60. Right now it's 74 and climbing. I'll shut it down before it gets to 90 to be safe, guess I'm curious right now

    I would say 90 is hot for me, but the GPU should be fine all the way up to 95. 100C is when the computer shuts down.

    You shouldn't get anywhere near 100C when playing games, I have an i7 and even with throttlestop I get around 80-87C

    When OC'ing over 510 I had stability issues in games even tho it would not go higher than 90C. I could OC to 625 with passmark tho.

    And for the sake of lengthening the liftetime of my envy , i put it back to stock clocks and put max CPU at 85%... Now I never go past 67C on either CPU or GPU.

    I have a question. If the card is underclocked then what's the normal clock speed for this card and why would someone have stability issues if you "overclock" it to its normal speed.

    They underclock because of the heat issues. It also conserves on battery life to underclock. So if you overclock, it could get too hot and cause instability or worse, permanent damage (not very common).

    If you're going to overclock, make sure you get the laptop the best ventilation you can to help with heat dissipation.

    It's not underclocked per se, but it's clocked at the lowest normal clock possible.

    The clock in the 5650M can range from 450MHz to 650MHz. HP has it at 450MHz

    Exactly. So it ended up floating right around 71c

    Interesting find though. Using afterburner I turned it up to 550 mhz, but it didn't actually take effect in the graph, has anyone else had this happen?

    Yes, I'm actually getting the exact same thing. I copied your Afterburner config settings, and was finally able to unlock the clock sliders, except when I adjust anything, it isn't reflected in the monitoring graphs... Some help would be GREATLY appreciated; I've been dying to unlock the full potential of this laptop for months now : p

    It mysteriously started working for me. But when I was playing a game for 10 mins it either got over heated, or shorted, or something, and black screened me. I checked MSI afterburner and it said it was running at 97c, but Speed Fan said it was floating at like 80c... i don't get it

    However, before it black screened I was seeing a 10+ increase in framerate, it was awesome

    Your system is unstable at those clocks, try lowering them some...

    I think you could overclock safely to 500. I started having stability issues in games after 510, which is very annoying.

    I stopped overclocking 2 days after starting because I was worried about reducing the life of my lappy.

    Yeah, that's how I'm feeling right now, I'm not sure if I want to push it too much more. They have stopped now, but I was getting horizontal lines popping randomly when doing non-gaming activities through HDMI out...

    I might try 500 sometime, just being really careful with the heat

    A 50 MHz OC has been shown to not help much at all. If you really want those extra 3-4 fps, go for it, but otherwise IMO it's not worth it.

    As long as you don't get artifacting (depends on your card) at 500MHz you should be fine. Temps below 80 are fine as well.

    well it seems then, for 3 - 4 fps+ i wont risk my card!, thank you!
