Hi guys, so I have gotten my Envy for a few days now and it's giving me a few headaches.

I have the I7-720, 4 GB Ram and 500GB Drive.

When I am idling on the notebook, it stays at about 50-55C, but when I start playing Team Fortress 2, my Envy 14 gets uncomfortable hot (Like a warm mug), eventually the screen goes black and theres nothing I can do but press the power button.

This happens whenever I don't turn the AC on to full blast. Is this normal? I would consider getting a Laptop cooler, however I would like to think I can play TF2 without overheating issues.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

As for the fan vents and heat, I can feel just a slight amount of warm air coming out, and hardly hear anything.

Seems about right, especially if you have a Core i7 in such a small computer. A slight amount of air is what I get off of my GPU heatsink, and that idles at 53c just by browsing around websites. You'll have to test and see what the load temps are by playing TF2 and seeing what they go up to, anything over 90ish shouldn't be good.

Thank you, any reason for my screen going black and computer freezing up?

The only thing I can think of is that its either overheating because the heatsink wasn't secured correctly, or maybe some files are corrupted. You could try stress testing the CPU and GPU and see if that locks up your computer, too.

Okay I tried running Prime95 and about 15 minutes in I was at 85/87C on my Core 0/1, I stopped after that. Is this normal? Should I be able to run Prime95 with any option for an indefinite amount of time without crashes / restarts / overheating?

I have tried Prime95 and Intel Burn Test x5, and in both instances I have reached 80C-85C temps on Core 1/2. Is this normal guys? I'm wondering if I should take it down to HP to have them check the heat sink / thermal paste / fans.

    @cwl

I think we don't know if it's normal because we don't have a large baseline. If you keep crashing while playing a certain game, try reinstalling that game or upgrading. If you crash from stress testing then maybe it's hardware.

I would suggest trying both cpu and graphics stress tests. Furmark is nice, or owwc (owcc?). I think we can't just say if your idle temps are normal as you haven't even provided your ambient temps.

Warm? Yes, but again its a i7 in a 14 inch computer. You'll get cooler temps if you raise the back end up or get a cooling pad... Now that I remember, those were the numbers I was getting on my Core 2 Duo before I applied some AS5 to my CPU and GPU when sitting on a desk, now I can't seem to go past 75c on either processors no matter what I do.

If you stress test in OCCT 30 minutes on the CPU and GPU and neither of those crashes the system, its probably the game.

Hi guys, my ambient room temperature is about 25-30C, running stress tests / benchmarks and my CPU reaches about 80C, 50C average on idle.

    Normal for I7s in Envy?

Okay so I can hit 90C on full load after about an hour without a cooler, tried limiting cpu power at 50% and it brought my temps down about 10C at loads. Might try apply ARtic Silver on my cpu and gpu to see if it helps.

I love this machine but ita just running too hot, cant even game without it shutting down in 30mins.

Any other I7 envy users have temps to report?

No return policy where I purchased it, and I can't be bothered really. Last HP machine for me, hopefully it will work for another 3 years that I need it to. Will try applying better thermal paste when I have the time and see if it helps.

Really should have gone for the I5, for those reading stay away from the I7 .

I disagree with this statement. It depends on what you plan on using your laptop for. I bought an i7 knowing full well that it is going to run hotter than the i5 (and less battery life, etc). I have a Logitech Portable Lapdesk N315, so the heat doesn't really bother me.

try turning on v-sync. It might help keep the temps in check while playing TF2. Especially for a laptop I'd use a non-conductive thermal paste like mx-2/3 so nothing unexpected happens.
