I have a year old Envy 14 (Just over 1 year warranty period) and recently it's been overheating and shutting down often as twice a day, even when I put a 1 inch lift to help the ventilation.

I'm using core temp to monitor and it's low is 62 and high is 86

Would a laptop cooler help? If so, which one would be best?

86C is not overheating; overheating occurs around 95C.
Anyway if these are idle temps, just open your envy and clean the vents and repaste cpu.

Those were idle temperature I'm by sure what temp it's turning off at but it's occurring so frequently that it's unusable. I'm guessing that since the vents are to the side the cooler won't help much?

Edit: my high's are 100 and 97 respectively. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. I'd a huge computer noob so I'd like to just get a cooler if that's an alternative to opening up the laptop and possibly ruining it.

82- 86 is an average temp under usage

Just get some compressed air and use it to blast out the dust from the outside

Noob here, any chance you could point me to the right page #s in the service guide that show how to reach the Envy 14's CPU? I haven't applied paste or opened up the Envy since I first got it and I suspect dust is building up.

You don't need to repaste the CPU, even the original envies aren't that old yet. You can just take off the back cover and clean out the fans and heatsinks.

    1. Open hard drive/battery cover
    2. You'll see 5 screws in a line across one edge of the back cover, they're small and sort of shiny.
    3. Unscrew these screws and slide the back cover off, you can now access the fans.

If you want to access the CPU, then you'll need to do a complete disassembly which is kind of hard. See page 72 in the service guide for that

It's interesting as I have had my Envy14 for about 8 months now and this just started happening to me as well. I cleaned out the fans and it has helped, but the fans still spin up to high a lot more than they used to and the laptop just 'feels' hotter.

I wonder perhaps if has something to do with the latest ATI drivers (11.6), as I did not have this problem before installing them and it only seems to act this way when I am on the dedicated card. I may revert to 11.5b and see if that helps...

I'm not sure how to revert the graphics driver as I wasn't even aware my system updated it. I purchased the laptop cooler and although annoying it hasn't shut down since.

What about Shop Vac`ing the vents? Might be better than compressed air (since you'll be blowing dust back into your system

Also, I've read that excessive RPM on the fans can damage them, does one need to cripple the fans (lets say with a stick etc...) to prevents it from spinning?

    Thanks and good luck

As long as you're not blowing the air directly on the blades for extended periods of time and spinning them up to excessive speeds, you should be fine.

Blasting compressed air in short bursts should be more effective than using a shop vac, because the dust gets stuck behind the heatsink and thus is easier to blow out the other way, instead of forcing it through

    Major thread revival:

I got one of the very first Envy 14, and 3 months ago the computer started having the same problems. At firs was only playing CPU intensive games like Battlefield Bad Company 2, and then it progressively got worse, up to the point where it affects all my video games. I started monitoring CPU temp with HWinFO and saw that (obviously) whenever I played CPU temperature would increase pretty fast and cause shutdown. Idle temperature is also really high.

Since I was in China at the time, I couldn't make HP honor the warranty, and now I got back it's too late...But I looked inside the laptop and realized the crappy thermal pad they had put on top of the processor to join with the heatsink had shrivelled up and wasn't covering the processor entirely / looked a lot thinner. I'm not very knowledgeable with computers but from what I understand it's a pretty crappy heat transfer solution anyway. You should check it out.
SO I bought a copper shim and thermal paste, and I will be reapplying it sometime next week. I'm hoping it will resolve the problem, and the CPU hasn't suffered too much. Until then, I'm trying not to over-use my tired computer.

EDIT: I should also add that while cleaning the fans provided temporary relief, temperatures both idle and at load ended up climbing back up anyway.
