Hey guys, I'm not sure if this was answered before, but searching didn't yield any good results, so I'm gonna ask.

Has a solution to the "slow" SSD boot time been found? In the boot time thread, I remember people reporting something like 40 seconds or so to boot the envy 14 on an SSD because of an ATI switchable graphics bug. Has this been fixed at all? (if so, where can the fix be found?)

It's kind of frustrating, having an SSD but having boot time still be more or less the same as without an SSD.

    Thanks!

    don't think so.

it'd have to be a bios fix I think.

and if it still happens on bios F.13 then *shrugs* it's not fixed.

I mean a work around might be to let it boot with the intel gpu and just use that gpu unless you wanna game (but then you may run into the powerplay stuff and have to check to see if the card is running full speed not 300/300 in gpu-z. only way to check that is to use the card and watch the clock speed in the sensor part of gpu-z)

I think you can stop it from auto-swapping to the ati gpu on boot while plugged in if you turn that "prompt gpu change if plugged/unplugged) stuff off in the switchable graphics menu.

    Haven't actually tried it though.

The Envy 15 boots in about 12-14 seconds with the Intel X18-M G2's in Raid0 after eliminating the graphical boot option and Aero. Shutdown time is about 3-4 seconds.

You probably have some services running that need to be switched off.

I have slow boot/shutdown with my Intel SSD. Also slower resume from sleep than my old laptop.

I think it all has to do with the switchable graphics. Though even when the ATI card was uninstalled I still had slow boot.

My Envy 14 with an OCZ Vertex boots fast... I'd say about as fast as my desktop did with the same Vertex.

So I suppose I'm not suffering from this bug, then. I have a stock configuration, but with an i5-450M.

Best times in the Envy 14 Boot Time LOG thread are around 40 seconds. If anyone is pulling times lower than that, I'd love to know what they did. Nothing I've tried has gotten me under 40 with my SSD, let alone near 20. Also, what are you using to time the boot? I like BootRacer: BootRacer - Test your Windows boot speed

I assume this will never get fixed(?)

Intel SSD takes about 40 seconds. Clean install.

It sucks with the switchable graphics! Before I installed the graphics after clean install, it was booting so fast. It couldnt even finish making the windows logo and went to desktop right away.

it's just how the bios and/or windows handle the switchable graphics.

it adds some extra time to the boot. Nothing you can do about it

I mean, how often are people booting anyway? I shut down/restart maybe once a week. I can sacrifice 20 seconds in a week. Boot up/shut down times are just another stat for OCD nerds to stress over for no reason...

It feels like it doesn't need to take that long though. I guess the trade off is you get switchable graphics.

I pretty much always shut down at the end of the day, and if I'm on the move going to and from work, so I notice it a bit more. I haven't checked how long the battery lasts with it put to sleep, so maybe leaving it on isn't such a bad idea.

I agree that it's not that big a deal, and that you can stress over stats unnecessarily, but on the other hand it makes sense to highlight things that aren't working as they should/could be, so that things can progress and improve. I guess this isn't a "fixable" issue, but it's interesting to know the downsides of switchable graphics as well as the benefits.

I disable a whole load of services, nearly all startup items and a few things in Task scheduler to achieve a faster boot. The fastest I've ever managed is 15 seconds with the Acer 1820ptz, SSD drive etc.

I do have a list of services if anyone's interested. Damn shame that the Envy 14 has issues :(
