My Envy 14 Spectre (14-3100) has started to make a high-pitched whizzing/hissing sound that I'm pretty sure wasn't there when I bought the thing.
It's only barely audible but enough to make me ask. It seems to be most audible along the bottom edge (the one right below the screen).
Once I close the lid, the sound seems to change or at least reduce a bit. Once I close the lid AND disconnect the power cable, the noise goes away. However, when the laptop is in use, disconnecting the power cord doesn't really affect much. The noise is not in any way related to the fan and it doesn't seem to come from the SSD either. The charger module (transformer) makes a similar sound aswell, but I suppose they always do?
I still have about 5 months of warranty left on the thing and I'm considering sending it in to HP for a closer inspection - but if they perceive it to be normal, it's probably 100-200 down the drain just for the opinion.
Any advice?

Bump.
Anyone? -
Update: I sent the thing to HP and they replaced the motherboard (and oddly the fan assembly as well) so everything is now hunky dory.
I think the noise was what some people call "cpu whine". There's still some sound left but the high-pitched whining is gone. -
HP Envy 14 first generation users were plagued with the infamous "CPU whine." Listening to it everyday however has allowed me to forget that it was even there (although it can still be heard if I am actively trying to listen for it). Glad you got it sorted out.
