Seems that HP is going to release an
Envy 14 update. The news are in German but the bottom line is that the Envy 14 will get Sandy-Bridge Core i5s and i7s. The other components remain unchanged including the much loved Brightview display.
-
If this is true (and I haven't seen any other reports of this, guess we will wait and see) then I will pull the trigger and get an Envy 14 (finally). In the UK I can get UK Standard Envy 14 for £820 including my GF's student discount from HP. I would expect that this new Envy 14 will be roughly the same price as the current Envy 14's.
-
Says it'll start at 1200 Euros... which is around 1600 US dollars.. that probably won't be true though. Anyways, I'm glad that all they did was add the new processors, I don't feel so bad about buying a pretty much maxed out model the soon to be 'old' version of then envy 14. Why wouldn't they use a new gpu though?
-
I would have expected them to try to squeeze a 6650M in there as a slight bump on the GPU... But oh well.
Guess we will have to see what happens come end of March time, which is when I would be looking to replace my Dell D630 -
1200-1300 has been the price for an Envy 14 since they introduced it here in Germany. We can't configure our model it's predefined. After a minor update now we have i5-560m (prior 5-520m),650GB(prior 500GB HD), 4GB RAM, Brightview (prior Radiance).
As for the GPU why bothering adding a 6650M ?? It's the same as the 5650 with just slightly higher clocking and a few more shader? But yeah they could do that .. but don't forget it's HP and their business approach is crap ( Radiance Display tragedy)... -
Why not?
-
Your current promotion on the Envy roughly equates to about £980 here in the UK
For £1000 we only get an i5-460m and a 500gb HDD! I cant seem to fathom why UK always gets screwed when it comes to these things! -
I heard that the majority of customers in the UK just go and buy a laptop without getting informed about what could serve their needs. Show me one company that would not make use of that. AFAIK the Radiance Display has never showed up in UK... (i wonder why
)
-
If I couldn't get a student discount on the Envy 14 and had to pay standard price; I would order one from Germany and then replace the keyboard with a full UK one from Ebay (about £30)!
-
Sweet maybe i could buy one and swap my radiance and sell the old one.
-
The 6650M is the successor to the 5650, not a rebrand. It's a new chip. (If it were the same chip, it would have the same number of shaders.)
-
Me too, I'm glad I pulled the trigger on the Envy with the 500 dollar coupon. I'm surprised at no new GPU, though...
-
are u sure ? Wikipedia gives me that...

Wait, so every one is clamoring over the introduction of a sandybridge core, yet that's the one they're currently having issues with. Right......
-
Sandy bridge = double battery life (so yes). Problems will be solved by mid feb early march.
-
There is nothing wrong with the CPU, its the chipset, which they have identified the problem and are fixing. There is no reason to be weary of buying a SB based notebook; when these do get released intel will have presumably fixed them.
Double battery life? Give me one Sandybridge review that has shown that please...The few SB notebook reviews have shown some increase, certainly not double. -
That is the Radeon 6550M which is not the same as a Radeon 6650M. The 6650M has 80 more shaders, and thus is a "new chip". The 6550M is a rebrand with higher clocks. That said, I expect the 6630M to be shipped with the Envy due to better thermal characteristics (600MHz vs. 485MHz).
-
The Sandy Bridge recall is a much bigger deal than people here are making it out to be, it's pretty much screwed up supply chains for every major PC manufacturer. It's going to be a while before Envy's with Sandy Bridge are readily available for order (I'd imagine May or June).
HP Delays Shipments of Laptops With Intel's New Chips - PCWorld Business Center -
Current i7's are getting 2 hours battery life while sb i7's are getting around five excuse me more than double. A guy posted today or yesterday with a dell that he returned because of the sb problems that said he got 5 hours.
Check this out: (scroll down a little ways till you see "the kernel" post about the sb times. A little more than 1/4 the way down)

Considering if this has the affected chipset and intel will be going into full production of the fixed chipset by April I would expect some serious delays in all the orders placed if it does really come out in March. You're basically gonna get the laptop in May... maybe. Not worth it for me considering you're only getting modest gains 15%-20% in both battery and speed. CPU's now-a-day's are plenty powerful to handle day to day stuff. The real problem is the HDD. Get an SSD and you'll see a lot more performance improvement than sandy bridge can offer.

One link is to a scifi forum? Seriously?
If you look at the Anandtech review, the battery life isnt doubled. Its also worth noting that the preview units battery is higher capacity than the other i7 variants. I think its a little premature to arrive at blanket conclusions like "double battery life" from a preview and comparison to SB desktop chips. I'll believe it when I see actual real reviews, not previews, of consumer laptops. SB will surely bring battery life improvements, but stating conclusions based on chips that havent been properly reviewed is premature. -
I was referring to CPU performance on a day to day aspect. Like Internet and word processing. You gave me benchmark scores with the CPU at 100% capacity. As for the battery life I'll wait for some user reviews in real life situations. For me personally battery life is not a big deal because there's sockets everywhere these days.

Agreed, all of my lecture halls have outlets for every seat. anything with 3+ hours is PLENTY for me. -

Lucky. In my university, the lecture halls don't have more than 4 plugs in the whole darn hall. People fight for one!

That's why someone needs to be the nice one and bring a power strip.

Dv6 and dv7 refresh are in march and they are styled like the envy so whats the big difference now? How can they not change the envy line?
HP's Pavilion dv6 and dv7 get Envy-like features, g-series loses the bargain basement looks -- Engadget -
Wow, where do you go to school? We only have outlets on the edge of each role.
-
I agree... it's almost like they could ditch the envy line now...

The Envy only has the advantage of Top-Tier Graphics, 3D and 1080p FHD Screens to their repertoire. Otherwise, the Pavilions now got most of the "Envy DNA" in them. -
If the dm4t get refreshed to look like that its pretty much an envy 14 - half an inch in screen. So that makes the dm4t screen resolution better than envy 14 doesnt it?
-
on a side note I was just on the phone ordering an envy 14 refurb with a 1600x900 screen so I could swap it out and then sell that refurb bv on ebay. Someone purchased it before my account was in. lol.
-
It might've been me, holy crap. Sorry bigwood212. I saw that the list got refreshed randomly on the outlet site and called immediately hoping to snag up that 160gb SSD version, but it was already gone.
Got the 300gb version with 8gigs and the 450m. For 990 shipped after tax and such. Not too shabby thanks to a 10% promotion code I saw on the main page haha. -
It'll probbly end up on ebay very soon.
Some sneaky people make a living doing this
-
Lucky I get to keep it : ), ebay isn't touching that screen if I can help it haha.

Maybe Bigwood's order was snagged by bigphil.
-
yea it was you then lol.
I tried for the ssd one also. Then was giving her my card number and she said its gone so I went for that one and after she said it was gone also. I just wanted the screen. I figure I could take the screen out put my bv screen in and sell it on ebay for $200 less easily. I seen no promo code. Where is it? I watch the refurbs like crazy there will be more. I've seen about 8 or 9 so far come and go. I just want the screen for my bv envy thats coming. I hate u. -
whoever got the 160gb ssd a sick deal.
-
It's not even a code, just a box at the top of the outlet that says "take an additional 10% off any envy refurb product" it gets taken off at checkout.
Also here,

Goodluck bigwood -
thanks. At least I got you out of the way now. Are you keeping the computer or just the screen?
-
Well, if I actually see that my screen is being shipped from the parts store, I'll probably just replace the one on my BV SSD one that's being shipped soon (I'll believe it when I see it), and maybe sell the refurbed on ebay or the forums here.
Otherwise I might buy a BV replacement screen from ebay for 120 and just take the radiance screen and sell the whole model separately on ebay. Keep the replaced Radiance screen in my new SSD model and keep the BV just in case I need to send it in for warranty repairs in the next two years.
Friggin so much time spent on this product, I hope its worth it! -
I didn't read all 5 pages, but incase no one translated the article:
"According to press releases display at the new Envy 14 with 1366 x 768 pixels on it. At the event, however, was a device with resolution 1600 x 900 view. "
So it seems that the Radiance is still floating around. -
Yeah, I also saw that... two questions though...
1. What event???
2. Sooo they used an old radiance or they actually got a new company to make something similar and didn't tell us?
-
Link? please
-
First post.
-
Yea the radiance displays didn't just disappear. I'm sure HP has a whole bunch in stock. They're probably saving it for another limited edition run with the new Envy.
-
At which point... I POUNCE!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
-
They probably noticed how a lot of people were specifically focused on obtaining that display and instead of introducing another premium Envy refresh with an inferior screen only option they decided to save some.
-
That would be me.
The guy had to create me an account too, I was sweating it. I called right at 8:30AM CST when the list is updated.
Keep calling at that time, they are bound to get a few more. FYI....The guys in the call center get the updated list before it goes online.
Looking forward to mine arriving.
Edit: Oh, and it won't be going on ebay.
Todd -
Is it updated every tuesday at 830 am? or just random days.
