Have you checked the BIOS for any settings?

Try uninstalling all drivers you can see on your machine, ATI and INTEL.
After uninstalling go in device manager and right click uninstall any remnants of graphic drivers.
Reinstall the intel motherboard chipset driver (chipset, not graphic !)
    Reinstall HP hybrid graphics drivers.

If you are using the wall power, ATI is the default video card, when booting with envy plugged in and when you plug the power cord in from battery operation. Unless you change the auto default settings of the drivers itself uncheck box for manual switching.

All programs need to be closed in order to switch video cards, but while using the power cord you are able to switch down to the Intel video card.

im guessing you had all applications closed and it still wasn't registering? this has happened to me many times and it does get quite annoying. a simple restart usually fixes it. i think its best to just close everything before you plug in the adapter and before you take it out. that way it should just do it automatically.

I receive this message when I unplug... can't switch graphics until all applications are closed.

Are you serious? I have to shut everything down before I unplug? :)

And if I can switch to Intel while still plugged in, how do i do that?

    Many thanks!

right click on the desktop. pick configure switchable graphics.

and well..it's self explanatory from there (power-saving gpu is intel, other one is radeon)

This doesn't work for me. When I click the integrated graphics, nothing happens. Is there someway I can manually force the laptop to use integrated graphics other than this method?

well my first question is do you have an i5 or an i7?

'cause the i7 version doesn't come with switchable graphics.

if it's not working with an i5 or i3 chip then you may need to uninstall and reinstall the drivers

may also need to clean 'em out too.

Does the ATI gpu turn off correctly? When I switch to Intel GMA, does the ATI gpu turn off?

I just clean installed W7 Ultimate with all the drivers installed

Well you can't switch if a game or a program is using the graph card actually ;) so it matters. Even some versions of Chrome prevent switching cause they use some 3d acceleration or whatever.

Sorry, do you (or someone) mind explaining how to make the Intel graphics the default? I want to use the Intel graphics by default even if I start the laptop while plugged in. I only want to turn on the Radeon manually before I start a game.

im having the opposite problem....i cannot get the ati card to detect...the intel works fine, but whenever i plug it in and it switches automatically to the ATI card, or if i try and switch it plugged in or not, it just goes to a blank screen. I did a clean install, tried to use the drivers provided with my machine, and also downloaded the latest ones...In the catalyst control center it only lists the intel accelerator, not the ATI...anyone have any knowledge on this?

Uncheck "automatically select power-saving GPU when on battery" and then select the Power-Saving GPU. Intel GPU will always be on, battery or power cord. If you want to switch to ATI GPU you will have to manually select High-Performance GPU on battery or power cord.

I have noticed if you have a program running and the window is up on the display (not minimized to taskbar) sometimes the switching button doesnt pop up. Be sure to close running programs before switching from power to battery for the automatic switch. I think you may need to re-install the graphics drivers from the HP website again. I do not have the "blank screen" problem you describe here.

Sorry for bringing this old thread back. Anyone figure why the graphics refuses to switch? I haven't noticed it for Intel -> ATI but ATI -> Intel problem happens quite often for me. I haven't been able to isolate the problem.

Also sorry for double posting...if this counts as that.
