    Hi guys,

I'm wondering if anyone can help.

Every time I restart my Envy 14 from windows by selecting restart it will just boot to the black and white screen with the hp logo and not go any further. In other words, it will freeze (cant even press esc to boot menu) instead of moving on to the windows loading logo.

I always have to manually hold down the power button to turn off the comp and turn it back on.

This only started happening when I updated my bios to f.23; before that it was working fine. I have tried re-updating the bios but still the problem persists.

I've tried waiting patiently for a new bios update but still none in sight. It's starting to get real annoying because I can even do windows updates because it won't complete without a 'proper' restart :(

Other things I have noticed also is when it boots, it doesn't make that laptop machine noise (can't really explain it); the noise the envy makes when you turn it on. Also if I have the back-lit lights on when i restart , it stays on even up to the hp logo screen. Not sure if that's meant to happen.

    Any help would be appreciated.

If the ODD isn't running its startup sequence when you turn the computer on (not restarting), then I'm pretty sure it's a BIOS problem. Try reflashing again?

If by reflashing you mean reapplying the bios up on the hp drivers site, I have already done that a few times. Still not resolved :(

I actually initially had trouble updating to f.23 so I followed a few workarounds from one of the links from this forum. Sort of wish I hadn't now :(

Is the hard drive first in the boot options in the bios?

Do you have any USB devices plugged in? I had the same symptom when my android phone was plugged in. (had it plugged into the eSATA/USB port on the right side)

Yup hard drive is selected in boot options. I only have a wireless mouse adapter plugged in; tried removing but still freezes. Any other ideas?

Edit: So I just decided to reflash my BIOS to the previous version to F.13A and the restart issue is now solved. I guess it was definitely an issue with the latest BIOS version. I may just leave it and wait for the next BIOS update to come out; will save me a lot of headaches. I appreciated any help that was put forth nonetheless.
