So, my Envy hasn't crashed all week, which is certainly a welcome change. However, Does anyone else have a problem with playing music from a media player such as itunes or winamp while web pages load? While the pages are loading my envy seems to slow down and the music gets all tinny until the web page finishes loading. VERY irritating...

I've got issues with sound diverting from the audio port to the speakers. The biggest culprits I've found have been IM clients - Skype's chat, Google Talk, QQ... When I get a message in those clients, the sound diverts to the Envy speakers to alert me, whether I'm watching a movie on VLC, playing a game, listening to music via Media Player, or whatever else. Is there any way to tell the IDT drivers to ball up and send all the audio to the audio jack, or am I going to be dealing with this until I buy a new computer?

Actually, this is at its worst when I play Burnout: Paradise - EA makes me log into their servers before I can get into the game proper (even though I only play offline), and the moment it logs in, the sound gets stuck on the internal speakers, even though it plays through the audio jack until it logs in. That's probably a game-specific fix, but it might bear mentioning anyway.

Is there anyway I can have the backlit keyboard turn on automatically when I turn on the laptop? Right now it boots with the keyboard light off and I have to manually press F5 to turn it on.

Update on my "repaired" Envy 14 that came back not repaired and even damaged worse:

I spoke with an escalations manager, and they agreed to send me out a new unit. It took a couple of weeks (between calling around and waiting for the build date), but the new one just came in today. The specs are all the same, save for an upgrade from an i5-430M to an i5-450M (since the 430 is no longer available). Overall, the new unit is flawless. One other nice note is that the DVD drive on the old one used to make a hell of a racket when the unit started up. The new one makes a little noise, but no where near as much as the previous one.

Overall, I'm angry for the problems I encountered and the time it took, but I forgive HP for finally making things right in the end. That's more than I can say about a number of notebook manufacturers out there.

Hey do you know if I buy it from amazon, can I do the same like you (send it to HP) for repairs? Or do I have to go through amazon for it (if I get problems within the return period).

Don't let the battery discharge to 0%. Don't leave the laptop plugged in 100% of the time. Ideally, you should be charging it to 100%, then taking it off the AC adapter (at least after a few hours - leaving it plugged in for a little while at 100% shouldn't hurt) and discharging it to 10% or so. Rinse and repeat.

If you ever store the notebook for a long period of time (weeks or months), leave the battery around 40%, shut it down completely, and keep it in a cool (but not cold) place where it won't be moist. Indoors and out of the sun will suffice.

When you first get the notebook, copy your C:\SWSetup (sp?) folder to external media. Then burn your recovery disks to DVD or flash drive (16GB or bigger). Then do a fresh reformat and enjoy.

    Hi there!

Im really happy with my new Envy 14 except one small issue: I have some really annoying spikes when checking the DPC latency of my system. For example, when i unplug my network cable and play a music file at the same time, the music starts to stutter. This is really annoying when your working with the envy, listening to music and then the stutter comes from time to time, depending on what you do. Its not really the fault of the audio driver, reinstalling didnt help. It must be one of the other drivers installed in the system and i already tried disabling some of them, but without success.

    Anyone know something about this?

    Thanks!

    hmmm...nope. does it anyway.

though I noticed that my music (from a mp3 file) doesn't stutter.

I get two spikes, one in the 2800s, another in 1500s, and then it settles down.

Interesting, i have those two spikes too, with nearly the same values...the first around 2900-3000, the second around 1500-1600. And exactly at this time the audio starts to stutter. When reconnecting the lan cable those two spikes reappear, as does the stuttering. Sometimes it also stutters when browsing the web and therefore causing load on the lan connection. Maybe i should research a bit more in this direction.

    weird.

I don't get the audio stutter.

I'm running on an older envy 14 (back from july) and am using the original idt audio drivers.

The original IDT audio driver? Where can i get those? The IDT website itself does not provide any drivers, they are always reffering to the Notebook manufacturer. And HP released only one audio driver until now. So can you provide a link?

    Thanks!

still shows the 6-18 audio driver for me (if you search envy14 on support and drivers on hp's website, and then pick the cto 1000 version).

it shows the 8-13 driver if you look at the cto 1100 version.

    good luck

I stopped the beats.exe process and I'm no longer getting the stutter. What is it anyway? I can still control the EQ without it on, so why is it even there?? It's clearly just causing problems.

In fact, i recently did a minimal recovery and the FN+B no longer turns the icon on/off and it actually opened up a new process every time and caused my fans to go nuts....

it's the thing that messes with the bass and treble.

I'm not really sure why it breaks so horribly at times.

in the end, I just never ever ever ever use it since all fn+b does is mess with the bass and treble.

Hm, no beats.exe running while my sound is stuttering. Well, ill guess ill try a fresh install of a naked windows 7, not the HP one. Lets see if the problem persists with the Envy drivers.

I take that back. Even without beats.exe running I still get the stutter. It wasn't so severe until I was loading up an image heavy blog and the stutter started. What could the problem be???

Some of the windows software is appearing incorrectly, particularly Media player and live mail. The tool bars at the top and bottom are just black and white, as if the graphics underlying them are missing. You can make out where the buttons are because the text is there.

I have tried reinstalling media player but that didnt help. I have also tried using a different theme.

Any help or ideas much appreciated.

What does beats.exe do exactly? Sometimes I open task manager and there's 4 of them there, each sucking 20-25% of my CPU...

Is it supposed to be software that makes sound quality better or something?

it's supposed to be the thing that functions when you hit fn+b

(it ups or lowers the bass and treble automatically..nothing really more. kinda pointless really)

it breaks if you update the sound card drivers. try to find and uninstall hp tone control or something. or don't hit fn+b. or ya know, find beats in your startup stuff and stop it from running or whatever.

Can somebody please explain why exactly the envy 14's power consumption is so high? With practically the same hardware, the 3820TG gets 5-7 hours. Is there some major difference that I'm missing here?

Ok, I'm having a weird problem here, sound keep switching between headphones and speakers, and I cant switch my microphone to the headset, its always on integrated, I start to suspect that Beat might causing the problem but I'm not really sure yet cause I couldn't find a way to remove it. anyone have any idea how to do that ?

I usually have this problem when I use skype, whenever I'm on call, all other sounds switch to speakers, and input always from the laptop's mic

Update: I looked into the Beat configuration, it's showing that "Microphone Unconnected" , and I'm pretty sure my headset is 100% good, I just bought a Razer headset, also my friend's headset never worked with my laptop... I have to remove this I guess... annoying Dr. Dre's crap... "sorry for the rage.. i'm suffering since day 1"

yeah you're gonna need a special adapter to turn the second jack into a mic jack.

    it's kinda annoying.

to fix the sounds (speaker wise) in skype you gotta go mess with speaker options in skype or something.

ati's got some scaling stuff going on.

go into the ccc: go to desktops and displays.

go see down there at the botom where there's a picture of the laptop screen and the lcd tv screen.

right click on the lcd tv screen. mess with settings (both over/underscan, and setting up the right resolution)

My keyboard is not very sensitive...anyone else have this issue? When I'm typing i REALLY have to hit the buttons hard in order for them to register on the comp.

Problem happens using both the laptop keyboard and external keyboards, so its def a software issue.

HP sent me a new keyboard which I never used...anyone want it? (PN 608375-002 sps keyboard pt bl us)

So I just got two weird system errors yesterday...

the Intel turbo boost technology said something about a port not being found? and a few seconds later it fixed itself

the ATI radeon card also crashed and fixed itself a few seconds later

what's going on? I've been using ubuntu 10.10 and it seems to have some issues with stability; is it also screwing up the hardware in this thing?

    Hi all,

Recently purchased this bad boy and was wondering whether anyone has upgraded the ram yet? I have 4gb but would like to get 8. What type of ram exactly is best? Also, anyone have any issues while doing it?

Sorry, I'm a self professed hardware newb, never done this before any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'd go with Crucial or G.Skill. If ram timing is "play-withable" in laptops, then either of those brands is good for OC'ing. If you can only keep RAM settings stock though, Corsair makes good long lasting ram. Check newegg for prices. They have prolly the best prices and very generous return policy if something goes wrong.
