Hey all, hoping someone can help me with my problem,

I bought the Envy 14 beats edition from Amazon, and the first thing I did was do a clean install of Windows 7. I reinstalled all the drivers in the correct order and everything, but when I switch to Intel Graphics, my fan turns on full blast and won't stop. Every once in a while, I can get the fan to turn off if I put the computer to sleep then wake it up again while in integrated mode.

I've tried multiple different drivers for ATI / Intel and tried both F.12 and F.13 BIOS. I've also tried changing the fan always on setting in the BIOS.

Does anyone have any ideas? If possible, I'd be ok with just being able to control the fan and leave it off when in power saver mode if there was software to do so.

    Thanks for your help!

You could try to manually install Catalyst from device manager with the update driver option. Are you installing the drivers from HP's website? I would hope that they can auto detect the graphics options in the computer. Those are the only 2 things i can think of right now.

OK I've got them installed again.. I just rebooted the laptop a few times with the power cable unplugged and plugged and then it installed the HP drivers.

I installed 3Dmark 06 and tried running a test. The second test it runs has really bad artifacts and doesnt complete - it crashes out.
I'm also getting an error "IDirect3DDevice9: :present failed: Device lost (D3DERR_DEVICELOST)" if I try and run the test within 5 minutes of each other.

I goggled and came accross this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...bios-modification-flash-restore-guide-14.html

So my graphics card is overheating?

There is some temperature monitoring software on the first page of the forum. You could install that and check the temps when the test is running. Incorrectly applied thermal paste would be my first guess if it is overheating.

If I want to use the webcam with Windows Live Messenger do I need some special version?

No you dont need any special software to use it. However you wont be able to use the effects from the HP webcam software in Messenger.

In regards to my laptop - the temp reaches a max of 70 but hovers anywhere between 63-70. My Laptop went crazy and I had to hold the power button to make it go off. Checking the logs though - temp was sitting around 65 and the load was 100%. I'm using GPU Z - I'm not sure if its accurate though as it says my fan was constantly running at 30% but I could hear it going up and down.

HP has some kind of thing blocking the fan from being tinkered with. Those temperatures don't seem to be so high that they would cause major problems.

Yea I googled around and the temps seem ok.

I downloaded and ran ati tool. The scan for artifacts thing - I had yellow boxes everywhere and about 5 minutes into it the whole screen was yellow with a random spot of black here and there lol. When running the 3D view thing it shows the box with alot of black flashing occuring. Not sure why its happening. HP are going to pick it up tomorrow.
Could it be software related somehow?

It could be software, but to me it sounds like a hardware issue, bad Vram or something.

Was there a fix for the network disconnect issue?

Ive set the network card to just use G-standard but still seem to get disconnects. In the logs I can see that its stops the TCP/IP service but its listed as a planned stopped and after that a restart of the the service.

well the one guy who had issues changed the channel his router was using. He was getting interference from another router in the area. You do this in the router settings

the other fix is "update your drivers if you haven't, stock ones are really really REALLY horrible" if you have a US envy 14

Drivers should be ok, I think I have the latest Intel drivers from the link in first post of this thread. Will double check the channel again.

This is whats in the system log, not sure if it turned up right when the net went down:

    * The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{...} because a master browser was stopped.

    * The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service was successfully sent a stop control. The reason specified was: 0x40030011 [Operating System: Network Connectivity (Planned)]

Then it enters a stop state followed by getting back to running state. Strange if the browser can cause this?

well the channel thing is a "change the current channel to another one on the router, computer shouldn't care and doesn't have to know what channel is being used, it'll find it anyway, but if there is interference from another router on the same channel you are on, it could possibly cause problems"

Change router from b/g to just b and did the same on the Envy, also made the net discoverable, hopefully something will help. Next door neigbours use channel 1 and 11 while im on 6 so shouldnt be any problem as its as far apart as we can be.

I'm about to purchase this 23" 1920x1080 monitor from Dell:

DELL Dell ST2310 23-inch Full HD Widescreen Monitor : Monitors | Dell

I plan on gaming and connecting my Envy 14 to the monitor itself as well as using a separate mouse and keyboard. It's a really simple question, but where is the port for the external monitor? Will I need another cable in order to connect it? I don't see anything familiar, I know my current LCD monitor uses one of those bulky connecting cables to my GPU.

You will need a HDMI cord. Some are really pricey (80-100), but you can get good ones for about 10 without any visible quality loss. You wanna stick with HDMI cuz its the only one that'll give you full power on ur external HD monitor

Thanks for the reply - that makes sense now.

With the Dell monitor, I have the option to add accessories and one of them is a 6 ft. HDMI cable:

Belkin HDMI Audio Video Cable - 6 ft Product details [$24.99]

I'm assuming that's what you're talking about - that'll go from the back of my monitor right to my Envy. $25, can't beat it it seems, unless there's some awful reviews about Belkin and it's worth spending the cash on something a little more expensive?

hdmi cables are generally all the same, no matter what the cable. or the price. (well ok, it's good to go with the expensive ones if you're getting a 100 ft cable or something, but otherwise, there's no real difference)

wonder if the envy is smart enough to not default to hdmi audio on a display without speakers.

if it isn't you'll have to make it do that in the idt/beats control panel. not that hard. just some checkbox you'll have to untick/tick

I use monoprice for hdmi cables, used their cables on a 360, satellite receiver, and E14 and never had a problem, shipping usually takes about 3 days. But like Magus said, unless your running 100 ft of HDMI cable, it won't make a difference what you get since the signal is all or nothing.

This is actually a great topic, and its generally a misconstrued one. There is no reason to spend any extra money on HDMI cables. The cheapest cable works at the same level as the most expensive ones. This is because HDMI is a digital feed which consists of 1's and 0's or On and Off respectively. The old yellow red white cables were analog and it would make sense to purchase a higher quality cable for a better (yet barely noticeable in most cases) performance.

I hate when I hear someone I know purchases a cable (usually from best buy) and it cost them $50 bucks (random number). I asked why they bought it and they say its because the salesman mentioned all the enhanced materials used to increase the quality of the cable and picture it produces. Thats just marketing garbage.

I received my Envy 14 almost 2 weeks ago and just got around to installing some of my STEAM games on the computer.

I got Left 4 Dead 2 installed and was excited to try it out, but when I hopped into a game, I noticed that the graphics seemed to be clipping or flashing and immediately thought that was strange. I ignored it for about 30 seconds before the game started to freeze (graphics and stuttering sound) for about 30 seconds at a time and then eventually the computer just locked up.

I thought this was a driver issue so I uninstalled, reinstalled and same thing. Then I thought I might roll back to the original driver that was released for it, so I tried to install that. Same result. I also tried cycling through all of the Windows power plans with no luck.

Finally got it back to where I was with the current drivers on HP's website and decided to try something else out. I unplugged the laptop, waited for the prompt to switch the graphics and hit cancel. I was running off the battery with the 5650 running and fired up Left 4 Dead 2. No problems at all!

What should I do? I feel fortunate enough to have ordered the Envy 14 with the $400 coupon and luckily, the laptop doesn't appear to have any of the build quality issues I was afraid of. I want to keep it, but not if it can't work right when it's plugged into the wall.

    Here's a video of what's happening:

Any resolution for the network card disconnet issue yet?

I could really need some help, according to the System Event Log it occurs every 30min, exactly. Could it be some kind of scheduled event?

Unless ive missed some setting I think I have turned off the power saving for the network card but it still happends. Any ideas?

Just an update on my artifacting issue.
Took them 3 weeks to get in a heatsink/fan/thermal module in and they replaced that.
The issue I have still remains =(
The only difference now is that the temps go even higher than before (70+) and when the screen craps out - instead of it being green/black its not blue/black.
Conveniently there is no complaints line for Aus lol
Artifacting can be seen in Furmark, 3dmark, Starcraft, AtiTool - theyre the only 3d things I have...

I'm trying to upgrade my Envy 14. I ordered it online on Nov4 and got it two weeks ago. It has 4GB memory (single slot) and I wanna put another 4GB. But when I opened the cover and found out it has 4GB Micron memory inside! I never heard about this brand. How should I deal with this? Amazon, Newegg, Fry's, Buy.com.... no one carries this. Will this one from newegg work with the Micron? THanks a lot.

    Thanks spencerp!

But the two sellers from Amazon only have 2x2 GB, not 1x4GB. And the sellers from Google searching results have the 1x4GB for more than $350. That's too much. HP.com has that for $100. If I can not find a cheaper one, may just go to HP.com. On this forum, someone mentioned that they have Samsung memory inside their Envy 14. The Samsung brand is very easy to get in US market. Why does HP switch to Micron?

Hello, I just recently received an envy 14 beats edition. I performed a factory restore, the other day, and removed some bloatware.

Well my problem is, I no longer have a window popup when using the quick launch keys; brightness, volume. Is there any way to get those back thanks.

This was posted many times in the owner lounge so check there but i believe your install the ati drivers on top of the hp drivers to get the keys to work.

I'm not positive i haven't done this myself.

I am having bluetooth issues. I have tried both the bluetooth drivers from Windows Update, as well as the ones from the HP website. In neither case can I open up the bluetooth settings menu, nor pair a device. Nothing shows up in the search window. I have tested these devices with another laptop and they all show up fine on that one.

My bluetooth is shown in device manager, and is enabled. Any ideas?

i have an envy 14 beats and a few problems:

i'm having the fan problems a lot of people are reporting. in the bios when 'fan always turned on' is enabled, it is always on but at very audible levels. when 'fan always turned on' is disabled, the fan is on the majority of the time and cycles from on to off quite often. i'm past the 21 day rma period, so short of sending it in for repairs have there been any solutions so far? i've also updated my bios to f.23 and the issues still remain.

i can also hear like a... short buzzing noise coming from the hard drive every few seconds at times. is that normal? it's not a big deal but i'm worried if there's something wrong with the drive. it sounds as if something is in contact with the disc every few seconds as it spins.

my dvd drive works fine but when i insert a disc it makes a fairly unpleasant sound as if its eating the disc up. it definitely doesn't sound normal even though the discs turn out fine. should i be worried?

and one last thing, where can i find the windows 7 product key on the bottom of the computer?

    @ Envy1222

I don't think there is a product key sticker on the Envy range, atleast not on my E14. There is a tool that recognises and stores your product key, I can't remember what it is exactly called but it is in the clean install guide.

Oh /facepalm guess I was so used to my Toshiba having the sticker on the bottom. Sorry about that, thanks for the clarification.

I've had my envy 14 for a few months now, so I'm not sure I would call myself a 'new owner', but I just started having this problem and I thought this might be a good place to post it.

I wiped/reinstalled windows 7 pro x64 upon receiving this laptop, and have updated and installed all the drivers as needed. It's worked great for the past few months, but just recently (past week) I started having this problem. Out of nowhere, I now seem to get lockups after resuming from sleep. It doesn't matter if I am on battery or plugged in, and the graphics are set to not switch on battery. I basically resume, can use the mouse for a while and perhaps click on a shortcut but then I get the windows circle/wait icon and nothing happens and I can't click on anything. Eventually I have to do a hard reset.

I am at a loss as to why this is happening. I have searched through these forums and found a few others with a similar problem, but none of the solutions seemed to work. Any ideas as to why this may be happening? I updated my video drivers to the latest HP versions (9/10) and it did not help. Any suggestions are welcome!

    Hey guys,

I just bought an hp envy 14 beats edition but in the purchase I made a mistake.

I selected i5-580M processor but kept graphic card as it was:
1 GB ATI 5650 - For Quad core processors instead of the switchable dual core processor graphic card.

I called HP but they said to cancel the order and re-order again. Should I do that or wait until I get the laptop and see if it is switchable or not? If not, then exchange it?

I would think the engineers who would build my laptop would know to put that graphic card but I am not sure.

Are you sure the order went through that way? Normally the ordering system flashes a big red message to you if you order incompatible components. If you are positive it went that way - and I would ask HP to verify that it did (the system might have a self-correct mechanism), and if it is confirmed, you definitely want to cancel and reorder. And that goes 10 times over if you ordered a Radiance display, which might not be available by the time you reordered.

Question. I wasn't paying attention and my cat layed on my Envy 14. Now whenever I hit the caps lock button a noise is produced from the laptop. How do I stop this?
