okay so i was planning to buy the envy quad this weekend and i just saw a new vr. of envy 14t.

HP ENVY TouchSmart 14t-k000 Ultrabook | HP® Official Store

apparently it can be upgraded to Intel Core i7-4500U+GT 740m. Not switchable graphics?? hmm

so its like im paying more money to get crappy-er CPU but much more mobile lappy plus touchscreen?

Its so stupid I cant use the 15%Off coupon with the student discount.

so the price will be around 950~1000$ with the 15% of these laptops.

what do u think? should i go for the 14T?

oh and another disadvantage is that its internal battery so after 1 year it will jus die out...

I personally would go with the Envy 15, it's much cheaper and has way better specs.. I wouldn't care for that extra inch..

Just to be clear. The graphics are switchable all intel haswell have integrated graphics there right on the chip. Next where does it state its internal battery?

I just placed an order for a customized 14t-k000. Estimated ship date is August 26. I got the i7-4500U, GT 740m, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 1600x900 screen, Backlit Keyboard. Total price after tax and shipping was $1130.

Are Envy screens usually good quality? I would have liked FHD but I am just hoping the 1600x900 is nice.

Also I am wondering if the battery life will be good. It is estimated at 10+ hours but only has a 3 cell. Is that odd?

I wanted to wait for Lenovo U430 but it is taking far too long. I am excited about getting the new Envy so I can see if I like it. Do you guys think I made a decent purchase? Specs are ok right?

Nice, yes pictures please and a video would be great! I'm particularly interested in the quality of the screen and if you could comment on the battery life once you have played around with it that would be awesome.

    What configuration did you get?

I am set to receive my Envy on 8/30. Here is my configuration:

    • HP ENVY TouchSmart 14t Ultrabook

    • Windows 8 64
    • 4th generation Intel Core i7-4500U Processor + 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M Graphics
    • 14.0-inch diagonal HD+ Anti-glare LED-backlit Display Touchscreen (1600 x 900)
    • 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
    • 24GB mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache
    • No Additional Office Software
    • No additional security software
    • 3 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    • No Internal DVD or CD Drive
    • Backlit Keyboard
    • HP TrueVision HD Webcam w/ integrated digital mic
    • Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth

Also this might be a stupid question, but the OS isn't on the cache SSD right? I was hoping it was for faster speeds but I assume 24GB is too small?

The cache SSD uses Intel's "Smart Response Technology," which basically puts the HDD and SSD in RAID where the most commonly used data ends up on the SSD. On my Envy 15 (24 GB cache SSD, 1 TB HDD), it takes ~15 seconds to get into Chrome including the time it takes to swipe my fingerprint.

Here are a couple program load times:
    Word: 1.4 seconds (Office 2013)
    Excel: 1.3 seconds
    PowerPoint: 1.5 seconds
    GIMP 2.8: 6.1 seconds
    Acrobat: 1.6 seconds
    Team Fortress 2: 10.2 seconds
    Autodesk Inventor: 24.1 seconds

I'd show more, but I really don't have much else installed yet. As you can see the performance is significantly better than an HDD, but not quite up to par with a pure SSD set up.

give it a couple of minutes as its processing. Also whats the program that can be used to identity the manufacture that made the screen? tried cpu id but couldnt find it.

Thanks for the video. The screen looks disappointing. Is it an average screen though? I don't need perfect quality, is it still halfway decent?

    Also is the touchscreen accurate?

I placed an order and was told a ship date. If they ship earlier will I just get an email with the tracking number sooner? Or will I not know its coming early?

They will email you the moment it shipps letting you know what the tracking number is so you will definantly know. The screen is disappointing. i put it like this. My brother who has a 2 year old hp dm4 which is a budget friendly 14 inch laptop, its screen is significatly brighter than mines. His has a resolution of 1376 x 768 and mines is 1600x900. the hp envy 15 which i had purchased before had a 1080p screen and also it was also disappointing. Hp just didnt choose to put high or decent quality screens into theses machines

How has the battery life been? Thanks

I am waiting for the 3200 x 1800 display with the envy 14. I hope that display is much better than the current 900p display
But I don't know when the 3200 x 1800 screen will be released. Does anybody know?

You made a good choice my friend......for the most part
In my opinion the ENVY 14 is one of the best ultrabooks on the market right now, but it does have flaws

And you will get 10+ hours of idle time, not usage time. You're looking at 3-5 hours I would estimate
You definitely chose all the right specs as well, by getting the i7 and 8gb of RAM

I love HP, but a decent purchase really comes down to somebody's own opinion about their laptops!
    Happy Computing!

I just got off the phone with HP. According to the rep I spoke to, who engaged a technical support resource, there is no plan for a 3200X1800 display for this model despite what the website says. I don't know if I fully trust this or not but I'm passing this along. I too would jump on this laptop if it had this option for a few hundred more dollars.

The big thing on the laptop is that you can upgrade the RAM. I need 16GB of RAM and the support rep confirmed that I could order it with 4GB and then bump it up to 16GB myself. Very few ultrabook class machines give you the option to do this.

Anyone who gets this, I am really interested in the screen quality, I primarily use my system with a monitor but is it really, really bad?

    Sean

I have chatted with multiple people from HP and the all say that the marketing department will be releasing it soon. I do think that it will eventually show up.

It does have 2 DIMM slots so yes you could get 16gb RAM in there.

The screen quality right now is apparently less than desirable, which is why the 3200 x 1800 screen needs to come.

Does anyone know if the Envy 14t-k000 keyboard flexes? I know the 15t-j000 has that problem and I was wondering if the 14 does as well.

I'm interested in the Envy 14t-k000, I don't know why HP didn't send out more press relases to the tech blogs that it was availbe. Any one know if there is a dedicated thread for it yet? Curious to see more feedback on the touchpad and keyboard, as well as if it's possible to remove the 24GB of msata and stick in an msata SDD?

Pretty much without doubt a 3200 x 1800 screen is going to be good, the cost to produce such a screen is going to be higher which means higher quality. This is my guess, but I can see it being worse than the current rubbish around.

I just ordered the Envy 14t on Thursday, Aug 22nd with an estimated ship date of September 2nd. I browsed on the forums here to see how shipping has been recently and it looks like they've been reliable. I've read horror stories of delays with HP and I got worried but those posts weren't exactly current. I watched the YouTube video posted in this thread and I'm looking forward to receiving mine. I'm so eager it's making me impatient haha.

Mine comes in tomorrow. It shipped a day earlier than expected and only took 4 business days to get here, and so far it's on time!

I just really hope the screen is alright. That's going to be the only thing for me. I'm planning on keeping it though. I REALLY wish there were some reviews of this out there. Not sure why it's not getting any publicity because it's a nice 14" haswell. I also hope battery life isn't horrible, that is another deal breaker.

I am happy with the CPU, 740m, and form factor. The build quality also looks good

Got my 14t-k000 today. Overall I really like it. I am coming from a 1366x768 old Toshiba Satellite so it's a step up for me. I think the screen is bright enough. I like the look and build quality. Keyboard feels nice to me as well. Touchpad will take a bit to get used to but I don't think it's bad. I am very confused by Windows 8 though, but that's just an OS thing not this laptop. Speakers sound and look good too.

I am a little worried though - my screen looks like it is glitching sometimes. It was fine for the first few hours I played with the laptop. But now I turned it on again and had a little trouble on start up with a black screen. When i got to the desktop, there was some black flickering. It's hard to describe. I tried to take a video but it stopped glitching by the time I started recording. I'm wondering if this is a defect that I'm going to have to send back. I'll try to snap a quick video if it happens again. Pretty disappointed that I witnessed a problem, I cannot keep the machine if it's going to be a daily thing with some flickering. It's not a big deal but I obviously don't expect my brand new laptop so have a screen glitching issue.

Ohh I'm so jealous! Mine shipped out yesterday and estimated delivery date is this coming Friday. Wish it would be sooner. I'm glad you received yours. How long did it take for you, ordering to delivery? If my delivery date stands, it would be have taken about 2 weeks.

yes a little quicker than 2 weeks from order to delivery for me.

unfortunately im having a screen flickering problem still. very minor but im wondering if i should just send it back since i have a free return. also, it seems when i plug in my ipod, the usb ports are either loose or something is just "wrong" because i dont move the usb cable or the laptop at all and the ipod is getting disconnected and connected repeatedly. its really annoying when im trying to charge it and sync it. idk if that means the usb ports are bad on the laptop or what. but thats another problem.

touchpad overall is ok, but scrolling is annoying sometimes. it seems when i am scrolling fine with 2 fingers all of a sudden it will jump to the very top or very bottom of the page. kind of frustrating lol....the pad FEELS nice, not sticky or anything its pretty smooth, but its annoying not to have full "control"...

still on the fence if i should return or not. i really want to keep it but these few problems would need to be fixed for me to be happy. thoughts?

I think if it is already giving you a problem you should return it and get a replacement while you still are within your 21 day return period. Make it clear to them that you're frustrated about it and make it a big enough deal that they should compensate you for the lack of workmanship on the build; maybe have them rush the order to you. That's what I would do. Such a waste to wait a while for a CTO laptop and then it doesn't work the way it should. Otherwise if you wait too long they could claim it wasn't their fault. Better to nip it in the bud before it manifests into a complex problem.

Anyone know if the 15t allows for a minimized recovery (OS only, no bloatware) under F11? And if it does how much HDD space does it take? Trying to figure out how much room I will have on a 120GB SSD.

Yes you can through F11. Or if you're within Windows 8 you can access it by pressing Shift and clicking restart, then Troubleshoot, then HP recovery.

Now I have to decide whether to get the 120 or 256GB mSATA SSD. They are only $50 in difference so the 256GB should be a no brainer.

I'm done with this laptop. BSOD on the second day of use. Ridiculous. Maybe I just got a lemon but I don't trust HP's quality now. So disappointing, I love how it looks..but screen issues, mediocre trackpad, and BSOD is too much for me. I don't think a repair is worth it for a laptop that's showing problems brand new...sigh time to pick something else even though school is going on now. Looks like the acer v7 and lenovo u430 are the ones to choose from..but both of their touchpads sound not that good as well...such a letdown HP

Also should add this laptop weighs 5.2lbs instead of 4.4..that's a big error on the specifications. I was very surprised at how heavy it was. Too heavy for a 14". I didn't mind much since it felt strong build wise, but ill probably go for a 4lb laptop now since it didnt work out for me anyways

I received my 14t today (a day early) and I have no problems with it so far. The box was a bit beat up when I got it but I know laptops are packed well enough that it's protected from traveling overseas. There isn't any flex in the keyboard or lid at all like in some reviews. I haven't ran into any problems with software errors like BSODs. I made sure it was 100% up-to-date with Windows and HP updates before doing anything with it--some errors are due to lack of updates. I don't think it's heavy at all; it's got some weight but I don't mind it. Overall all the things I was scared my computer would have (from negative reviews) were nothing to be worried about at all. I'm content with my laptop :)

DId you get the 1600X900 screen? If so how do you like it? That's the biggest concern I have.

I did. I think the screen is fine. To be honest, details with resolution to screen don't stand out to me unless it's super obvious. It looks all the same to me lol.

How's the battery life with the 1600x900 screen? My 1080p screen on my 15t basically destroys the battery in 3 hours and I'm considering selling it and getting the 14.

Well I've been running some processor and graphic demanding programs so it eats the battery pretty quickly which is to be expected. I get about 4 hours left after 2 hours of running these programs. I know the advertised battery life on hp.com was 10 hours but it also did state that it's just standby power with it never going to sleep and screen brightness being at 60. Haven't done a lot of "normal" work on it that isn't processor and graphic heavy so I can't speak about the battery life overall. All I can say is that I've never had to plug it in for it saying it's low on battery while using it, and I use it pretty much all day. This is if I plug it in at night and unplug it in the morning so it's ready for the day.

Were you saying that you got 6 hours out the battery (2 hrs intensive, 4 normal)? Has the laptop still been working well?

I ordered the Envy 15 but had to return it because the screen was defective. I was not satisfied with the 4-5 hour battery life of simply surfing the web and using Word either, so I'm wondering if the Envy 14 is any better. I'm still waiting to see when the 3200x1800 screen is coming out but there's no info online and HP says its coming out sometime soon but doesn't give any specifics.

Also does anyone know if there is a Spectre laptop in the works?

I wish other laptop manufacturers had incorporated the Haswell processors in their laptops already... The only reason I'm really considering this laptop is for that reason; given my experience with the Envy 15 I'm somewhat weary.

EDIT: Also, I've gotten conflicting information from HP. One agent told me that the RAM is upgrade-able, while a few others told me it wasn't. Someone in this thread mentioned that they were told it is upgrade-able. I'm confused... My understanding is that the SSD cache prevents the RAM from being larger than 8GB. In the Envy 15, if you opt for more than 8GB RAM you are not able to selected the SSD cache option. For this reason I would assume that since the SSD cache in the Envy 14 is mandatory, the RAM cannot be upgraded past 8GB. Can someone confirm this?

The way I understand it is this:

The cache temporarily stores the RAM when you go into standby. Because of the limitations of SSD drives, the cache drive needs to be roughly 3x the size of the RAM.

The 24GB cache drive is therefore not large enough to be able to cache 16GB of RAM.

If you have a larger SSD in the mSATA drive then it should be able to handle it.

I think if you're getting a larger SSD there's really not too much point in a caching drive anyway since the speed of startup will no longer be inhibited that much by having to load everything from a HD.

I could be completely wrong but that's the way I understand it.

I thought it's a physical limitation though. Like the SSD is blocking a part of the laptop where a bigger memory chip would fit? I don't really know much about hardware so maybe I'm not understanding something. But in the envy 15 you could opt for 16 GB and no SSD. But you're saying if you were able to add the SSD with 16GB it wouldn't work because it couldn't cache *all* of the RAM? I'd rather have it cache some of the 16 GB than none at all. That's why I thought it was a physical limitation.
