Like the title says, I got tired of always having the fan running from startup to shutdown regardless of task. If just tooling around on the web, can I just set this to "off"? Cuts down on noise dramatically, may even extend battery life a tad.

It will still turn on when it needs to, and it might end up running all the time anyway depending on how you use it; plus you're adding small thermal cycles to everything inside, which can eventually cause failures.

    But sure, its safe.

anyone running with this setting OFF for extended periods? just curious if there have been any problems. i wouldn't think so. i'm sure it runs a little hotter but i think Envy can handle it and i only expect 3 years on the components.

edit: turned off fans in bios, CPU still runs cool while browsing, like 35C. fan kicks in occasionally when i run other programs but this is much better, PC is almost dead quiet now except for high frequency leak from CPU (or something).

my house was about 65F when i turned off fans and checked the temp this morning (slightly chilly). CPU was ranging from like 33C to 46C doing normal stuff on the desktop with fans off, according to RealTemp.

Remember Koshinn, you got a Core i7 Quad and dapreview has a Core i5 Dual. i5's are always cooler in every condition than a Core i7 Quad, even on idle.

Yours is also an i7-720QM, which is a 45W CPU. The i5-520M is a 35W CPU. That said, I'm getting temperatures closer to what you're seeing. HP screwed up putting my GPU heatsink on... I'll bet they screwed my CPU up, too. 80C max isn't scary to me though, so I'll just check it later this year when I plug an SSD in.
