    Hi all,

I have been reading about the Envy 15 (as I'm getting closer to buying it). However, one thing that concerns me is regarding the temperatures.

So, how hot does it get?

Most likely, I'll be getting the dual SSD rig. For anyone who owns that, how hot does it get for you?

My setup is looking like the i7-820, 8GB RAM, 5830, dual-SSD. I have thought about going to the 16GB RAM option as well, though I doubt I need it.

    Thanks,
    John

Internally, they do not get that hot as they have quite good cooling with several fans pushing the heat out.

However, the chassis is metal alloy. Metal conducts heat well. Therefore, the laptop itself, particularly the underside, can feel like it is getting hot by comparison to a regular plastic chassis laptop. The palmrests can get warm, but generally not hot.

It is not an issue at all if you are going to be plugged in at a desk using external keyboard most of the time, but if you will be using it mobile on your lap, etc a lot something that should be considered

I'd be using it on my lap a lot, but I could get a cooler or lap desk for that.

I have the i7 720 with 320GB HD and use it on my lap exclusively.

Based on reviews about temperature, I bought a laptop cooler. I chose the Targus Chill Mat since it is 100% level and matches the Envy dimensions almost exactly. This allows me to angle my laptop perfectly while sitting on my recliner.

After almost a month of ownership I find I use the laptop cooler all the time, but passively. I only had the mat plugged in for the first week. I bought this cooler on sale for $20-$25 (can't remember exactly). So for me it is an expensive tray, but works well for that purpose.

The other day I used the laptop directly on my lap and it worked OK, but let through just enough heat that I prefer something between me and the laptop. As others have said...under normal use the palm rests get a little warm, but not an issue.

All this being said, I would buy the exact same laptop again based on current choices available.
