Certain keys on the keyboard don't work and if they do they will type a couple of random letters. Anyone else have this? It most likely isn't software as they dont work even before I get to windows(recovery command prompt).

Sometimes it will work after so many reboots and BIOS resets, but generally it happens at random times. I already spoke to tech support and am sending it in as the lady I talked to had no idea what the problem and insists it's windows. The onscreen keyboard works fine which is how i typed all of the "P"s and ".

Anything I can do to avoid sending it in, as I really like the laptop aside from the malfunctioning keyboard.

I just started noticing this today as well. Got my envy 2 days ago, anyone know whats happening? I did a fresh win 7 install so it might be weird driver issues??
Although everything was working fine for 2 days after the reinstall.

That sounds a lot like a hardware issue, unfortunately. It may be as little as a misaligned keyboard cable or something but for a brand new machine that's unacceptable. I can't imagine what driver issue it'd be... the only thing I can think of doing is going to the control panel and removing the keyboard and letting it auto-detect again maybe?

It seems to be related to what USb devices are connected during boot. if there are, the keyboard loses some keys. a reboot with nothing attached fixes the issue. seeing as it uses a nec controller for usb 3, it may be hardware or driver related. is it just my machine or are others having an issue. im trying to see if returning this and getting another envy is a good idea.

In your c:\swsetup folder you should have the USB drivers... may be worth trying to reinstall those before returning it.

I already tried installing the usb drivers. no luck. and hp doesnt seem to have any other/new ones on their support page. and the screen keeps blanking intermittently and i have to do a hard shutdown.

I already sent mine in. Ill update when I get it back. But from what I noticed I have this problem even when nothing but a mouse is connected at boot and even then even when nothing is connected. It also happens outside of windows so windows drivers shouldn't be affected. I can't imagine this being anything other than a BIOS or hardware issue.

This failure also happened when the computer was fully booted into windows, everything loaded and I was surfing the internet and the keys randomly stop working and persists after many restarts and BIOS resets.

For reference I have a i7 720qm, 4GB ram, a 1920x1080 matte screen, and a 5830. USB 3.0 is present and the drivers are installed.

hm well if its outside windows then theres nothing to be done...I also have the exact same configuration as yours, although you seem to be the only other person with the problem.

how long does hp take, or estimate, the return and replacement take?

Just an update, I received my laptop back and on the paper they stated that they replaced/repaired the keyboard. They didnt touch my windows install so im assuming it was a hardware issue.

No I no longer have that issue. However the keyboard they swapped into my machine has a broken key bracket so the S key pops off frequently.
