My wife just received her Envy 15 today from FedEx, same specs as mine, and I will take some time this weekend to run some benchmarks, before and after reformatting the drive, doing a fresh install of windows and tweaking some of the settings, including unRaiding the SSD, in order to gauge the level of improvement from these actions.

    BIOS Version F.1A
    System BIOS Date 03/08/10
    Video BIOS Date 02/24/10

    Installed Video Drivers:
    atiumd64 8.14.10.0708
    atidxx64 8.17.10.0240
    atidxx64 8.17.10.0240
    atiumdag 8.14.10.0708 - ATI Catalyst 9.11
    atidxx32 8.17.10.0240
    atidxx32 8.17.10.0240
    atiumdva 8.14.10.0239
    atiumd6a 8.14.10.0239
    atitmm64 6.14.11.22

In addition to the usual benchmarks I will run some tests that benchmark applications we will use frequently, such as Photoshop, etc.

OTB Benchmarks: These benchmarks are run on the out-of-the-box Envy, with HP crapware, Windows Home Premium 64-bit and the X-18 G2 drives in Raid0

    Boot/Shutdown Times:
Startup (from off state, power button activated until Windows logon screen with no spinning cursor): 32.3 sec
Logon (from Windows logon screen to desktop with no spinning cursor): 8.4 sec
Shutdown (from desktop with no applications running to power LED off): 8.6 sec

comments: Sequential read is faster than my machine was OTB (469 MB/s); however, the 4K Random Read QD=1 is about the same, much, much slower than it should be, in fact slower than the 4k Random write speed (at QD=1).

There aren't really any meaningful system level 'tweaks' for win7. You can deinstall/disable some of the default services that come with win7 and you can certainly delete or upgrade any pre-installed software that comes from the manufacturer.

You can also do quite a bit in terms of personalization of the GUI and desktop. These aren't tweaks but part of the greatly expanded list of openly configurable items that are available to the Win7 user. There are loads of assistant programs that work with personalization.

But the days of tweaking machines for performance/efficiency/stability as people used to do with XP, are gone.

Some old XP tweaks do nothing, some will hurt/slow down a win7 machine.

I agree, and I appreciate any advice or guidance here.

Perhaps "tweaking" isn't the correct term. I just want to know whether any of my commonly used applications or startup/shutdown time will improve if I do a clean install of Windows, reformat the SSD and unRaid the drives, or follow any other advice regarding disabling certain Windows services that might drag the performance. Or whether perhaps there is not much point to any of that.

why unraid the drives? raid is the main advantage for having 2x 1.8 inch ssd in there right?

No... The main advantage of having two 1.8" drives is to.... support two 1.8" drives, y'know, instead of one. ;)

Unraiding them and having latest Intel RST (or MS) drivers will allow TRIM to pass thru to the drives allowing them to perform much more efficiently and resist performance degradation due to dirty data blocks, etc. (google TRIM, SSD's...)

I don't think running CDM before / after driver changes and clean install is going to show much. However, the other general system benchmarks after clean install may prove useful.

I have a 'lite' Win7Pro install I've been putting together (see MSFN Forums -> vLite) that can boot windows 7 on my desktop with Intel 80GB G2 SSD from OS Select to Usable Desktop in 9.5 seconds. I hope to run this on the Envy and see the results. If the Envy can pull off 9-10 seconds, then it would be good evidence that the low 4K random read performance doesn't impact real world use much. My lite install also uses only 3-4GB instead of ~12.2GB a normal Win7 clean install uses, great for SSD users.

For a frame of reference on the CDM 4K random speed, here's what my single Intel 80GB G2 disk gets in my desktop (ICH9 southbridge, X48 motherboard)

We experienced our first system crash while in the process of transferring 21GB of files via USB 3.0 cable from an external HDD sitting in a SIIG external dock to the Documents folder in the C: drive.

Although the problem event is called a "bluescreen," the screen simply went black for about 30 sec and then reboot automatically.

I think there may be a Microsoft patch for this on WU but not absolutely sure. Also look for the Envy Windows 7 Essential updates on the HP driver site.

There seems to be some bugs with the USB.

I would say dead0, or liquid, but dead0's has become more extreme and more then I'd like to do. (WinSxS stuff)

My personal iteration is based on one of dead0's older ones.

dead0's current may work if you go all the way (make sure you follow all instructions 100%) and include the required updates, but I have not gone there.

liquids may be a bit safer. I am trying to get Media Center included again with the old dead0 setup I'm using

I will probably be willing to share mine after/if I get mine working/satisfied.

Today we got a "black screen" on this machine. In other words, the screen went black and the only way to get control of the laptop again was via hard reset. Having gone through an experience with my first Envy 15 where I was getting these "black screens" 10-15 times per day, it is not pleasant to see this happening again with the third unit. I will report back if this happens again during the 21 day period.

I downloaded whocrashed.exe from this page
    http://www.resplendence.com/download/whocrashedSetup.exe

The analysis is only able to read information regarding the actual "blue" screen crash (the screen went black in the middle of transferring some files via USB 3.0 external drive, then the system automatically rebooted itself) from yesterday. There is no mini-dump log file referencing the black screen problem event which occurred today.

A few hours later I experienced another graphics card "black screen" event - this time while playing a 3D game. I could still hear the sound track, but there was no way to exit the black screen other than hard reset.

I suspected perhaps it had to do with installing the AMD GPU Clock Tool and testing the over clocking settings yesterday; however, when I opened the tool to check the current clock settings they were already at the default setting of 499.97 Engine Clock and 799.87 Memory Clock.

I will try updating the factory installed GPU driver to the latest one specified on the Envy 15 drivers thread.

    Hello Moviemarketing
May I ask what you did to fix your crashing problems ?
I bought an envy 15-1109tx in march 2010 and it has been crashing like yours 3 to 4 times a day ever since. The laptop went back to HP for repair under waranty ( I am not a computer wizz ) and it came back 3 weeks later from HP with exactly the same problems after they said they changed the HDD. Very frustrating when spending almost 2500 gbp (3000 usd) on a laptop!

    here is my spec :
    Product nbr : WJ819PA#ABU
Microprocessor : Intel Core i7 CPU [email protected]
    Memory : 8GB ( 4X2GB)
Graphics : ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830 Series
    System Board : 1522 36.34
    BIOS: F.26
    HDD: WDC WD6400BEVT-60AORTO 600GB

    OS : Windows 7 Professional 64bit

    Installed Programs:
Microsoft Office 2005 Small Business with SQL server 2005 Express
    Adobe CS4
    Hyperion Reporting Studio 9.0
    Skype

and all the HP crap that came with the laptop !!

Honestly I think engineering may have done a hardware level tweak with the most recent Envy 15s to solve the crash problem. Mine will do 800 core stable... I run 750 core always on the GPU and no black screns. I only get the black screens when I go to 805 core and 3dmark 06

It will actually run furmark at 840 core.

This tells me there was a voltage tweak or a process/stepping tweak on the cores to improve stability. That or I got REALLY lucky. I have never seen a 50-60% overclock on the GPU core in any video card I have owned. Especially a notebook. that is a lot of headroom...

With respect to my first Envy that was crashing to black screen frequently, I returned it for full refund within the 21-day period. I then ordered a second unit with the same specs which has had no black screens or blue screens at all.

The third unit (my wife's) has crashed to black screen about 3 or 4 times since we received it from HP and experienced one bluescreen crashes during USB 3.0 file transfer. We are planning to return this one before the 21-day period expires.

OK, we just had a second bluescreen while in the middle of trying to correct the Synaptics control panel settings.

The WhoCrashed analysis of the minidump file indicates it is exactly the same error that occured a few days ago

    CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT

If I understand correctly this clock watchdog timeout error has something to do with the cores being out of sync?

    Any suggestions or advice?

No, you should not do anything like that.

If your machine experiences black screen or blue screen or crashes at stock settings you should

1.) try a clean install with all fresh drivers (see forum for drivers thread) 9-10 driver installations are necessary. many components

2.) if you still have crashes, you need to RMA the machine for service or refund/replacement.

I can say that I did experience a black screen on my machine when I was still trrying to use the factory HP windows 7 install. I tried to update the drivers to 10.4 mobility from AMD and I got a black screen at the end of driver install. From there I was not able to get drivers properly installed and I ended up deleting all partitions on the disk and formatting and clean install windows 7 professional. no more problems here, but then again I did not really have a problem to begin with, just bad luck with the order I used on driver updates with the CRAPPY factory install.
