I'm in somewhat of a sticky situation here and I'm hoping someone on these boards can help. I'm trying to reformat my Envy 15 series notebook I purchased in August 2010. I've (mistakenly, it seems) wiped the hard drive and even ran DBAN to zero it out. Now when I attempt to re-install Win7 using the system recovery DVD's I'm greeted with a message saying "this is not a bootable device." Curious.

The problem with all this is that I've sold this laptop on eBay and I'm supposed to shp it out today. Why can't I just install Windows using the HP recovery discs? I'm still covered under warranty, but when I call they tell me to send the notebook back to them. That doesn't really work considering I need to send it out TODAY.

    Please help...

the recovery disks only work when the original recovery partition is there I think... it doesnt matter however as you can use the link Dailo23 posted to get the disks

That doesn't work. I have several "vanilla" copies of Win7 that I've tried to install, I still get the same error. I think the problem has to do with the Envy 15 not having an internal DVD drive. This is still BS because I'm using the official HP-branded DVD drive that came with the laptop.

Overall I'm just furious at HP. I'm going to get negative eBay feedback because they suck and shipped my laptop with bogus firmware. I only wish I had caught this when I was still within the 21 day return policy.

First and last HP purchase, that's for sure.

    Hmm.

Try downloading the ISO, then copying the files inside onto a bootable USB / external hard drive.

See this: How To make Bootable USB

EXCEPT, to save time, use "format fs=ntfs quick" for a quick format.

Then boot from the USB / external and see how it goes

I do not think its hp... it might be the cd drive your using as I have a LG and a asus drive (both usb) and they both worth fine with the envy 15 when I had to reinstall

Sending it in for repair, again. eBay buyer was understandable, luckily for me. Unluckily for me I've already bought the iPad that was supposed to replace this laptop, and since I had to refund the buyer's money I'm now out $800.

    Meh.

Oh, I tried bootable USB as well. It's a firmware issue with the USB controller on MY particular motherboard (or so says HP tech support). We'll see I guess.

Well theres the problem.. you were trying to replace the computer with a lowerend device and he got mad... so figured out what you were doing and came up with a plan to sabotage the sale... now after a week of pampering at Hp's repair depot hes going to come back excited to be in your life again only to be crushed again by the apple logo lingering where he was supposed to sit... poor, poor lappy

An iPad is an odd replacement for an HP Envy 15.
