    Any new Envy 15 owners get the SSD + HDD storage option?

    I was wondering the following.

    On which drive is the operating system installed on?

    If the OS is installed on the HDD , how easy is it to move it to the SSD drive?

    Do you need a special caddy that the SSD and HDD fit into?

    Is it easy to swap in another SSD to replace the HDD drive in the future?

    Any pics of the drives in the machine would be nice :)

    Thanks!

    I got mine recently with that setup.

    The OS and recovery is on the primary disc, which is the SSD. The SSD has 3 partition to it. The boot partition, OS, and recovery.

    THe HHD is blank...

    It should be easy to swap as now you have a bracket in there. The difficult was if you had gotten HDD only, it would've been the 2.5 disc and you need to get a bracket to use 1.8 SSD and 1.8 HDD.

    I format my systm and did a fresh Win7 install. OS on SSD, Program is on SSD, everything else including cache directory and temp directory on HDD.

    Doesn't matter if the hard drive is in slot 1 or the ssd is in slot 1. Whichever one you install windows on it becomes the C: drive (obviously you should do it on the ssd for incredibly start-up times) and the latter becomes the D: E: F: etc.

    Thanks for the reply smilepak. :D

    One more question.

    If i wanted to replace the SSD+ HHD combo with a standard 2.5" HHD can you just pop it in or do you need a mount for the 2.5" drive as well?

    You would need to get the 2.5" bracket

    Yup, last Meever said. You need to take out the dual drive bracket and replace with the 2.5". Not sure if that is a standard size or what can you buy that.

    But yes, install OS and Program Files on SSD. Update all the programs profile to use HHD as cache folder.

    You can some pretty good boot speed. For me 2 second boot to HP Instant On OS. From ther under 12 seconds to boot into windows 7 fully and ready to use.

    Smile, what's the point of using the HDD for the cache? Wouldn't be quicker to have on the SSD?

    To slow down the SSD wear level probably. But I think it somehow defeat the purpose to have a SSD.

    That creates more wear on the SSD.

    @smilepak:
    Is your SSD G2? Does your SSD support TRIM commands?

    SSD wear is different from Trim. SSD cell can only be rewritten by a limited number of times. Once a cell dead, it is dead, SSD control will replace it with a different cell. Intel SSD has 10% reserved cells.

    I just noticed in your signature that you list your HP Envy i5 Core as having 6GB of DDR 1333 memory. How is that possible with Core i5? I thought the memory bus for Core i5 was 1066?

    Does anyone have a part number or source on the dual 2.5 & 1.8 bracket? Thanks!

    Correct. Beside, why waste cache spec on SSD when I can have main program on there. Photoshop Cache, Firefox COokies and Cache, etc don't need to be on SSD.

    SSD is G1 I believe from the serial.

    Remove the battery, replace 1x2GB DIMM with 1x4GB DIMM. They have it on New egg for 169.00 or another place on for Samsung for $149.00, but they are out of stock.

    SSD = Intel G1 or G2
    HDD = Toshiba
