According to an admin on HP's The Next Bench forum, HP has developed an official software fix for the black screen issue:

I returned the units I had with blackscreen to HP for refund, but if anyone still experiences this issue, please try this fix and let us know if it worked for you.

I don't know if it is the "F.2A REV: A" or an earlier BIOS update version that HP is claiming fixes this, but this is the first time I am aware of any HP rep posting what they claim to be the "official fix," or even acknowledging that it is a significant problem many people have experienced.

When I encountered this problem on two different laptops (the first in February and the second in April/May), I went through many BIOS and ATI driver updates with HP tech support by phone and absolutely nothing helped.

Update f24 (i believe thats the right number that have been many updates) fixed the issue according to hp.... there has been many bios updates since then and have fixed numerous things. Please flash the newest one and then see how you are doing

Unfortunately, I have no way to check it, because I returned both units with the black screen problem to HP for refund.

I'm having this issue and I have installed the updates.

I noticed that it happens whenever I'm running on the power plug. On battery the computer is fine and won't lock up within a few seconds on games. But literally as soon as I plug it in the computer freezes and black screens.

So I've been trying to find out why in Lord of the Rings online and I assume all my other games it freezes up and then goes to a black screen.

I tested it by playing for like 10 minutes without power and then plugging the power and it freezes and black screens.

Then playing with it plugged in it crashes within a few seconds.

edit: one time I was able to unplug it after it went black and I got back to windows and I saw that there was a pop-up balloon that said something like "ATI Family driver has recovered..."
