I suspect there's a bit more to it than just the user visible settings. F9 resets those. :)

Man, do you think is possible that you can upload a copy of the BIOS folder in HP_TOOLS partition somewhere so we can rollback to version F.04?? I deleted the partition by mistake when fresh installing the OS, and updated to F.06 before getting into this forum regarding this keyboard issue :S

    Thanks in advance!!!

Tried to grab it - but lost it when I rolled back to F.00 for some strange reason. I'm now running F.06 with absolutely no issues (after the Win-B fix) for a couple of days now, so I've given up on F.04 for the time being.

You know, I was trying the Win+B fix but couldn't get it to work (I have HP_TOOLS partition on a USB drive), every time I try, just get the caps lock blinking...but nothing else...what do you think am I doing wrong?

BTW, how did you roll back to F.00???

The roll-back to F.00 happened the first time I used the Win-B BIOS recovery function. My F.04 disappeared after that. :)

Caps-lock blinking is normal - and it takes quite a while to recover, please be patient and don't interrupt the process. Let us know how it goes!

Well, I'm back after a few days of testing my proposed solution which a number of you seemed to have tested out as well. I've got an entirely new problem now... (sigh)

    F.06, Keyboard revision 44.1d:
    1. 100% confirmed that I still have absolutely no keyboard problems when running either on A) battery or B) AC power WITHOUT battery installed.

    2. Keyboard problem is at its worst when typing with backlight OFF and on AC power WITH battery installed. Yes, you read that right--every single time the backlight is OFF, keyboard = fubar.

    3. NEW PROBLEM: my backspace button IS NO LONGER ABLE TO REPEAT WHEN HELD at any time other than in situation #1 above.

I will resort to punching puppies if I don't find a real solution soon, but in the mean time, I regret to tell you all that the Win+B thing is obviously no fix. I'd like to see a keyboard revision to be able to download, but I have had no such luck on google for that.

Yikes, that sounds awful. When my keyboard malfunctioned, 3. happened with 2. - auto-repeat went away, if that's any consolation. 2. and 3. seem closely related, so I would chalk that up as one problem.

The KBC software is contained in the BIOS (F.06 = 44.1D) so I'm hoping HP releases a fixed F.07 (44.1E?) for us quickly!

FWIW, I've been running F.06 for 16 hours straight (all power, graphics, and backlighting combos I could think of) and my keyboard problems are still gone, like with F.00 and the ever elusive F.04.

Hewlett-Packard: Please fix the late 2011 Envy 3xxx series KB controller software! Thanks!

Well, I applied the Win+B fix yesterday, and so far no issues with the keyboard running F.06...I'll try to update this in a few days... :)

Well, yesterday I left the laptop on sleep...and today when I woke it up, the keyboard is a total mess...I'm also suffering with the backspace not able to repeat from time to time...and some keys, no matter how many times I press it, they just don't register unless hit space and go back (n, b & t mostly)... :S

My Envy keyboard is still ok, even after sleep, but we really need a BIOS update. HP, are you listening?

idk if this helps (didnt read the rest of the thread), but I originally had this problem with missing keystrokes, especially when i switched from battery to A/C. I solved this by first updating the bios to f.06. but that didnt work...

so I followed an online post: first you turn off the computer and before hitting the power button to turn it back on, hold down the windows and the "b" key.

and while holding "win" + "b", press the power button. you will hear some sounds, your laptop will maybe beep, and after 30-60 seconds, it will go into bios and repair it.

this is after i updated bios from f.05 to f.06 (which initially didnt solve the problem).

it also had a weird problem where the "backspace" would not repeat. but since i did the win+b, everything seems to work.

    hope that helps!

That didn't work for me. What I did was hit F2 on startup, went to BIOS Management and rolled back to F.00.

I joined this website just now just to thank all of you here. I've been watching this topic for some time now. I almost returned my laptop this week, then decided to go all in today and successfully got mine working perfectly after several BIOS updates and Win-B combos.

Just wanted to let you guys know that there are people out there watching this topic too :)

Oh, and if you have the issue where your backspace only goes back in "ones" just do the Win-B again, and it should eventually sort itself out. Worked for me.

    Cheers.

I must say that the keyboard issues disappear if I always shut down the laptop. If I leave it on Sleep, when woke up the keyboard problems happens again...so, for now, Shut Down always for me...

Sorry to respond late--been away from this thread for a bit. I doubt there's anything you can mess up, b/c it's just a way to remove any corrupted portions of your current BIOS. I'm very surprised you're having keyboard problems in F.04 though... IIRC, F.04 and before was the last time I could remember having a "normal" keyboard.

I'll take a moment here to update everyone else: I think it's been about 2 weeks or so that I posted the Win+B suggestion, and since then, I've had the keyboard problem eventually resurface in various iterations  . I've posted about this keyboard mess in a few different threads/forums, so if I haven't already posted it here, the only reliable "fix" that I've discovered is to type with the BACKLIGHT ON while running AC. Don't ask me how or why... :D I just know that I've been on F.06 (wretched thing), which means Keyboard Controller ver. 44.1D, and regardless of Win+B method, the backlight things works.

I'd still really rather have a working, updated BIOS from HP...

@Redlineshift: I had that backspace problem creep up on me too!! But it disappeared as quickly as it appeared after I restarted a few times, and it hasn't appeared again since. Aarrrgh!

Excellent news - you're really not missing too much with F.00 as opposed to F.06. :)

My keyboard remains behaved under F.06 for the better part of a week now, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. It really shouldn't be up to luck, though - where's the QA with this laptop? Still, I'm loving this Envy 15! :D

Guys, I contact HP's support about this issue, and the guy told me that they had never heard of this issue until I mentioned it. I told him that it was quite a common problem with this model of laptop, and he basically said they didn't know about it..

I even mentioned the color gamut issue and he said pretty much the same thing. Funny thing is, in the end, he was attempting to help me with fixes like "re-install the driver" and such.

I'm just saying this so that more people contact them about this, so they can be aware and work on a fix for all of us.

So, I don't think i have this issue. I do miss keystrokes form time to time, but it seems to be more related to not hitting the keys hard enough. If I make sure to push them fully i don't miss anything. I have gotten used to typing with a little more oomph and have not had a problem in a while.

I'm having this same issue with multiple HP Elitebook 8460's running Win7 x64.
Just thought I'd bring that up... not sure if any other models have been mentioned, but I found this thread searching for any hints/clues/anything to make this issue go away!

If my Envy 15 had a keyboard on par with the one in my Lenovo T61p, I would be so happy. As it stands, I've had my Envy 15 for over three months, and I still haven't switched to using it as my primary notebook, even though it outclasses my other notebooks in every other way. This is entirely because of the keyboard/touchpad issues I've had. I miss keystrokes too often, it would kill my programming productivity to try using this as my main system.

I'm dismayed that it looks like Lenovo's next round of notebooks (announced at CES 2012) seem to abandon their traditional keyboard design in favor of the island-style chiclet keys that I have come to loathe so much... :(

Same feelings here. I returned my Envy 17 just because I couldn't use it as my development laptop. I just can't afford to miss keystrokes. Everything else about the laptop was amazing!

Its amazing how technology goes backwards sometimes. Just because something is in fashion.... :(

I just bought an Envy 15, and it is suffering badly from missing keystrokes (came with f.06). I replaced the hdd with my ssd and did a clean install, and so far I haven't experienced any keyboard malfunction.

Hah! My thoughts exactly on the "listening after all" part! I'm extremely happy to report that after 2 days of testing, F.07 has fixed ALL of me keyboard strokes woes!!

Now if only HP would go through w/ an LCD recall (instead of the announced "software" release)... =D

TEMPORARY FIX: unplug the power transformer, wait a second and plug it back in

i'm just jumping in here, so i havent read the most recent posts, but i've had the same missed keystroke issue as everyone else. i did the bios reset which didnt work, so heres to hoping hp sends an update. i just got this bad boy about a month ago and everything about it is perfect with the exception of the missed keystroke issue and the windows explorer hang issue both of which i've had no luck fixing.

honestly i'm probably going to return this thing and get something else, but i have about 2 month of grad school left so i need it to finish. ill just return it after that (costco 90 day return policy - whoop)

i've been looking for a simple fix that will just get me by. ive noticed that when the keystroke issue appears, restarting doesnt help, neither does shut down and restart. so i tried removing the power and replugging it. seems to work for a while. i havent missed a keystroke this whole post.

    hope that helps

    cheers

Have you gotten the F.07 BIOS update? It fixes the keystroke issue.

I'm having major issues with my keyboard after all the bios updates still typing not even that fast causes either a "enter" function to occur if i hit 12
3 to fast as you can see when i type 12
3 its adds and enter key function so instead of 123 after the 2 it automatically hits the enter key and puts the number 3 on a new line as if actually hit enter. pissing me the hell off!!

when i type qwerty this is what happens if I do it to fast qwe.r as you can see it ads a . after the E ??

Im about to return this laptop everything else is amazing.. and my beats button refuses to work anymore.. not a big deal.. its just convenient.

for a 1300 laptop you would thing some QC would go into this. So pissed right now. FIX YOUR JUNK HP seriously I knew i should have gotten a business class laptop

It still amazes me that HP released this laptop series with such bad QC. I mean it doesn't take much to test a keyboard.... :( You just have to type it on 3 or 4 random samples. The problem is so prevalent that it would show up on almost every piece if we try hard enough.

I know this is an old thread, but I do not know how to update my bios to the right version. Im missing keystrokes right and left and would love to flash the new bios (currently have f.04). Everytime I flash the newer bios, Insyde flash comes up, says successful, but when it reboot Im still in version f.04. I have tried stopping my antivirus and safe mode, but the new version will not flash. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
